1991 Volkswagen Vanagon Carat Standard Passenger Van 3-door 2.1l on 2040-cars
Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States
This vehicle starts, runs and drives great. The transmission shifts and drives smooth. I've had this vehicle for two years now and drove it very few miles. I used it mainly for camping trips and to haul larger items. I recently moved and now we just don't have the driveway space and so I'm forced to part with it. There are a few minor things that need to be fixed but I just never had time to get around to it. It's a wonderful vehicle for being 20+ years old and with relatively low miles!
There are a few small dents and scratches and some minor body rust (see pictures). Otherwise it's in good shape. The tires are only 3 years old with very good tread left and only about 10,000 miles driven on them. The rear wiper does not work (it just might be a fuse). Also needs left front window regulator (I still have the windshield wiper arm which stripped right off the bolt). The rear hatch latch button is loose but still works. Probably a simple fix but, again, I never got around to it. All the exterior signals and lights work. The underbody has a fair amount of rust but everything functions properly. This van amazingly does NOT rattle even when you hit the larger potholes! I replaced the water pump, ball joints, and exhaust system last year. I recently replaced the oil pressure switch (leaked oil big time but now it stopped). Replaced front upper control arm bushings and right front upper arms (also had alignment done - it drives nice and straight). It needs a rear brake job (pads are down to less than 10%). Also needs a fuel tank seal (leaks slightly when full). The A/C compressor is disconnected (I'm not even sure if it works). The heat works great though! The electrical system has no serious problems. The power steering line leaks and needs to be replaced so the power steering does not work (a little muscle gets the job done). The cruise control also works great for those longer trips! The interior is clean and generally is in good shape. I had some minor modifications done to the interior lighting (now VERY bright). One of the instrument panel lights is not working so its tough to see tachometer, fuel and temp gauges at night. Front right window does not roll down which can easily be modified and fixed (once again, I never got around to it). The power locks and power windows have been disconnected so it's back to the basics in this department (you might be able to get them to work with a little electrical know-how). The passenger seat back does not 'lock in' so it rocks back and forth when passenger is sitting in it (a minor inconvenience and simple fix). All the seat belts function properly. I have the original snap-on privacy curtains which are in great shape. There is also a very nice Panasonic CD player deck installed with great sound! (needs an antenna though). Winning offer must pay $500 deposit to my PayPal within 24 hours of close. The balance must be paid in full by certified bank check within 3 days. Buyer is responsible for shipping. I have past maintenance receipts available upon request. The title is free and clear. Please contact me with any questions and I will try to promptly answer them. This vehicle is for sale as-is and I'm not 'parting it out'. Please make an honest offer only if you are serious about buying it. Thank you! |

Recharge Wrap-up: Mercedes gets F1 efficiency, EV charging in Vermont, VW e-Golf to use Bosch
Mon, Jul 14 2014Efficiency equals performance, especially in the case of Formula 1 racing. The Mercedes AMC Petronas team points to several key efficiency technologies it uses to get the most out of its cars. And if their utter dominance so far this season is testament to this relationship, perhaps we should pay attention. Mercedes highlights hybrid tech, turbocharging, aerodynamics, lightweight construction, tribology (both in making internal components and lubricants more slippery) and simulation as crucial to getting around the track faster than anyone else. These just happen to be some of the same things that make the cars we drive on public roads more fuel-efficient. Learn more in the press release below. It's a good read. Brammo, maker of sweet electric motorcycles, is teaming up with TEAM Industries to make drivetrains for electric vehicles. TEAM, which specializes in drivetrain technology, will also become an investor in Brammo as part of the partnership. "The electric vehicle market is a growth market," says TEAM CEO and President David Ricke, "and TEAM and Brammo will be providing a wide range of solutions for OEM manufacturers." Read more over at EV World. Vermont celebrated the installation of a new EV charging station as part of a Green Energy Corridor between Boston and Montreal. When finished, drivers will be able to make the whole trip in an EV with access to charging along the way. For $5, customers can charge their vehicle in about 30 minutes at the Red Hen Baking Company in Middlesex. There are currently only about 700 EVs on the road in Vermont. The state has a goal to get 90 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2050, and getting more EVs on the road is crucial to that mission. Vermont hopes that expanding the charging infrastructure will convince more people to go electric. Read more at Vermont Public Radio's website. For it's new e-Golf, Volkswagen will use Bosch chargers for home installation and ChargePoint stations at its dealerships. Bosch will have various 240-volt options for the home, and will also provide installation. e-Golf customers will also get a free ChargePoint membership, and will have access to the company's network of charging stations worldwide. The 2015 e-Golf goes on sale in the US later this year. Read more in the press release below. Volkswagen's 261-mpg hand-built XL1 headed for Geneva
Thu, 21 Feb 2013After years of rumors, development and testing, the Volkswagen XL1 is finally about to become a reality. The project that began life as a daring 1-Liter concept car in 2002, will finally get its production-ready curtain call at the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks.
As soon as it hits the streets, the two-seat XL1 will instantly become the most fuel-efficient and most aerodynamic production car in the world. The car uses a plug-in hybrid system to achieve mind-blowing consumption of just 0.9 liters of diesel fuel consumed every 100 kilometers (and average of roughly 261 miles per gallon). Plus, the XL1 can go up to 50 kilometers on its battery power alone. Coefficient of drag is a miniscule 0.189, thanks to a tiny frontal area and an obviously slippery shape.
XL1 power comes from a two-cylinder diesel motor connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the 20 kW electric motor is fed by a lithium-ion battery. Both combine to give the XL1 performance figures that are, while not stirring, not shabby considering its extreme frugality: 0-62 miles per hour comes up in 12.7 seconds and top speed is nearly 146 mph.
Recharge Wrap-up: Volkswagen Sustainability Council meets, Zee.Aero flying car spotted?
Wed, Oct 26 2016The Volkswagen Sustainability Council held its inaugural meeting in Berlin. Made up of nine international experts, the council will advise VW and take action on its own as it sees fit. In the meeting, the council decided that in 2017 it will focus on tackling CO2 emissions, planning for post-2025 regulations, and assisting the automaker's "transformation from car manufacturer to mobility services provider," as VW Chairman Matthias Muller puts it. Volkswagen has approved 20 million euros (about $21.75 million) in funding for Sustainability Council projects for its first two years. "We are fully aware of the large transformation that lays ahead Volkswagen Group," says George Kell, Sustainability Council Chair and Founding Director of UN Global Compact. "We were invited to be part of this journey and are very much looking forward on being actively involved in the development of this journey." Read more at Green Car Congress, or from Volkswagen. Honda plans to ramp up its share of hybrids sold in the US. In response to increasingly strict emissions standards, the company wants electrified vehicles (including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, and fuel cell vehicles) to make up two-thirds of Honda and Acura sales in US by 2030. Some analysts are skeptical, though. Christopher Richter of CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets says that dealers are telling Honda they don't want hybrids. "Unless there's a change in what dealers want, I don't think they are going to get there that fast," Richter says. Read more at Automotive News. Witnesses report spotting what could possibly be the Zee.Aero electric aircraft at Hollister Airport in California. Zee.Aero, a startup funded by Google cofounder Larry Page, has a hangar at that airport, where a photo was taken of the aircraft in question. The craft is said to be capable of vertical takeoff and landing and can fit in a one-car garage, earning it the "flying car" moniker. Eyewitness Saul Gomez described the aircraft as "quiet" and "hovering 20, 25 feet off the ground." Read more at Electrek, and watch the interview at Mercury News.
