1991 Volkswagen Vanagon Carat Standard Passenger Van 3-door 2.1l on 2040-cars
Mansfield, Ohio, United States
I've owned this 1991 carat since April of 2012 and have sincerely loved this thing. It looked nothing like this when I took possession of it, but hopefully in the right hands it can continue down the right path and become something great. I have done many things to make this a reliable road warrior, modifying it to carry my family reliably wherever I might chose to go. I lifted it 2" and upgraded the brakes as well as replaced most all the plastic doo-dads that other vendors are now making "improved versions" out of billet aluminum or stainless. The wheels are properly fitted audi 16" that have been in use for roughly 2000 miles. Most vanagon folks know that this isnt cheap to do and requires a stud conversion, wheel machining....etc.....all thats been done! Tires are 215/65-16 coopers from sears less than 5 months old @600.00 including roadhazard and alignment. The stereo is a Sony iPod ready CD player with eight speakers. Custom enclosures were added to the doors in order to add extra 5.250 there and a custom rear hatch panel houses two extra 6x9's. The added sound in the rear really counts when out at the drive ins! Hatch up-it's an instant area party machine.
Engine/trans. Transmission: I bought van with a bad second gear so the trans that's in it is a lucky random junk yard find that came out of a 1990 carat with 150k miles. I made sure the numbers lined up as far as dates went so I wouldn't be stuck with a bad 3/4 slider. I also pulled the bell housing while at the bone yard to inspect the ring gear just to insure I wasn't dragging home a pile of crap. I got really lucky! 300.00+@200.00 worth of seals, gaskets, and proper fluids I was in business- this shifts like butter and saved me a ton of money Engine: This is an older rebuild that a local vanagon guy got pulled because the rear seal started leaking. He just pulled it and tossed an ecotec into his van. I cleaned it up and did a reseal. I also added a few reliability upgrades. There are many things I could continue to do but it's best to pause now and let someone else drive off into the sunset. Some of the things I've done include- Rebuilt rack and pinion, new inner and outer tie rods, new upper ball joints w/ gowesty spacers, westfalia springs, new upper control arm bushings, new shocks, new power steering hoses front to rear. Front brakes are Mercedes 500sl this upgrade netted dual piston calipers and vented rotors. Rear: Westfalia springs, new shocks, new parking brake cables, new rear wheel bearings (zerked housings), eurovan rear discs great holding parking brake. Driveline repairs: new stainless water pump side pipe, stainless oil cooler tubes, all engine bay rubber hoses replaced, new injectors, Sachs clutch kit, gowesty billet thermostat housing, new temp sensors, 42 draft designs oil sender kit with new oil stock oil senders plus all of the vdo stuff added in. Hvac repairs: Rear heater core and valve new, front blower motor new, a/c drier and exp. valve replaced during 134a coversion-a/c does clow cold. All hvac functions like it should Electrics: Central locking does not yet work at the rear slider and rear hatch. I just hadn't dug that far into it. Winning bidder does get a box of related central locking bits to have fun with. I did get both masters working while I fought with everything in the front doors so the hard part is figured out. READ! THIS IS A RELIABLE DAILY DRIVER. THE AUTO CHECK READS HORRIBLE BECAUSE OF THE HIGH MILEAGE, MANY OWNERS AND A PAST ACCIDENT. TAKE THAT FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH, IT'S 22 YEARS OLD AND THINGS ARE BOUND TO HAPPEN IN DURING THAT TIME PERIOD. THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE AUCTION OF A COMPLETE VEHICLE MINUS ENGINE. I AM OFFERING IT THIS WAY AS MOST VANAGONS ARE BOUGHT FOR ENGINE SWAP PROJECTS. THE ENGINE WILL BE LEFT IN PLACE SO THE WINNING BIDDER CAN INSPECT ALL SYSTEMS AND BE REASSURED THAT THE VAN OPPERATES AS PROMISED. SHORTLY AFTER INSPECTION THE ENGINE WILL BE REMOVED AND YOU CAN BE ON YOUR WAY. IF BIDDING SHOOTS ABOVE 3500.00 THE VAN CAN BE LEFT INTACT. |

Bosch fuel pumps spark recall of 2015 Golf, GTI and Audi A3
Tue, Apr 28 2015A few weeks ago, BMW and Nissan both issued recalls for some of their vehicles to replace Bosch-supplied fuel pumps. The pumps had nickel plating that could flake off and cause a failure. Volkswagen Group is the latest automaker to be affected by the problem and has a campaign for the 2015 Audi A3, VW Golf and GTI. In total, 6,204 units of these models are in need of repair. The problem with the VW Group vehicles is identical to the previous recalls. It's possible for the pump's nickel plating to come off and cause increased friction. Eventually, this can result in the component's failure. According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (as a PDF, here), there are no reports of accidents or injuries from this issue in the VW Group models. Bosch spokesperson Linda Beckmeyer tells Autoblog that these vehicles don't all necessary share an identical fuel pump, but the parts all use the same plating process. The problem also prompted repairs of the 2014 Ford Escape several months ago, she indicated. When asked if the issue could prompt more campaigns, Beckmeyer said that she "can't speak to that" because automakers decide on the recalls. Owners should receive notice of the problem soon, but according to the NHTSA documentation, there currently aren't enough pumps to fix all of these vehicles. "Bosch is working closely with automakers regarding replacement parts," Beckmeyer said. When available, dealers will replace the components free of charge for affected customers. SUMMARY: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2015 Volkswagen Golf, GTI, and Audi A3 vehicles. Improper nickel plating of components within the fuel pump may result in the fuel pump failing. CONSEQUENCE: If the fuel pump fails, the vehicle will not start, or if the engine is running, it will stop and the vehicle will stall, increasing the risk of a crash. REMEDY: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace any affected fuel pumps, free of charge.
VW budget sub-brand stuck in limbo over VW standards, costs
Sun, Mar 2 2014Reports in October 2012 claimed Volkswagen had begun investigating the creation of its own budget brand. This came after having failed to purchase Malaysian car company Proton or produce a meaningful partnership with Suzuki, and after watching Renault-Nissan make piles of euro on Dacia and plot the return of Datsun. For VW, more important than the question of what to call it was how to build it profitably and in a way that didn't damage the VW brand. According to a report in Autocar, a satisfactory answer still hasn't been found. The hurdle is how to hit "'necessary' quality and safety levels" at the price points needed to make the venture worthwhile. At the time of the 2012 report, German outlet Der Spiegel said VW was trying to get prices down to 6,000 to 8,000 euro ($7,784 to $10,379 US), about two thousand to four thousand euro under the price of the VW Up and in line with the cost of a 6,790-euro Dacia Sandero in Germany. In March 2013, VW announced, "We want to bring a true budget car to the market in China in the foreseeable future," the most concrete move in that direction after years of planning to make a decision. Working with local Chinese maker FAW, it was predicted that the vehicle in question would appear around 2016, but as of November last year a final vote on it needed to wait until this year because "We are still working on the cost side" and profit possibilities for a car that "has to be durable, it has to be precise, it has to be safe." Even Fiat, another automaker long considering a budget brand beneath its Fiat line-up, wasn't sure how to squeeze any extra money from lower-cost products but was sure that it couldn't be done by manufacturing in Europe. If VW hasn't yet made the math work with a joint venture in China, it will be interesting to see how it might build a European go-it-alone business case.
Volkswagen debuts MkVII-based diesel Golf GTD
Thu, 21 Feb 2013As Volkswagen prepares for the launch of the seventh-generation Golf, it continues to show off some of the car's different variants. With the standard Golf and the ultra-efficient BlueMotion Concept out of the way, now we're finally starting to see some of the sportier versions planned for the hatchback. Confirmed for a debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen has now given us our first glimpse at the Golf GTD.
Just think of the GTD as a diesel version of the GTI with all the handling and styling upgrades, and then add a torquey engine to the equation. (We had the chance to sample the current GTD over the summer, so click here to read more.) To go with the new body style, VW also gave the GTD a new TDI engine consisting of a similar turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter inline-four layout but with an output of 184 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque - that's an increase of 14 hp and 22 lb-ft over the current GTD. That's a pretty good oomph, but the GTD won't be setting any acceleration records with VW quoting a 0-62 mile per hour time of 7.5 seconds thanks to the car's 3,036-pound curb weight.
The styling of the MkVII Golf lends itself quite well to the more aggressive body kit found on the GTD (and likely matching the GTI). The new front fascia and blacked-out grille give the GTD a sporty look up front, while 17-inch sport wheels, rocker panel extensions and smoked LED taillights finish off the visual changes. The GTD will only be offered in three exterior colors: Tornado Red, Black and Pure White. As expected, the interior gets the plaid seat inserts and flat-bottomed sport steering wheel, but the car also gets stainless steel pedals, a black headliner, ambient cabin lighting and a specific gauge cluster readout.
