This is a 1990 Volkswagen Vanagon Carat. This is a pretty hard to find model. 2.1L rebuilt watercooled engine with an automatic transmission. The engine needs a little fine tuning but runs well enough to drive anywhere. The transmission operates flawlessly, and the van is a very smooth, comfortable ride.
The Engine -
- Crank turned
- Brand new pistons, rings, wristpins, bearings, and sleeves
- Brand new rods and bearings
- Every gasket replaced
- Newish alternator
- All fuel lines and most coolant hoses replaced
- Head pitting repaired
- New exhaust valves
- Various other new parts I forgot to mention
The engine does have one oil leak, at the oil pump...I believe I forgot to put the gasket on. Stupid mistake, especially considering I took my time with getting every other detail right. Doesn't leak much and is perfectly driveable but still annoying.
- Van has 4 new Kuhmo tires.
I have had this van a couple of years, but after rebuilding it I have decided to move to Louisville and can't take the van with me. I finished the rebuild in the beginning of June 2013, so obviously I haven't put many miles on it since. I did drive it to Bonnaroo which is about 300 miles for me round trip. The only trouble I had was a blow out (hence the new tires.)
Everything this van needs besides the oil leak and a little fine tuning is cosmetic. Mechanically, this thing is super solid. The body doesn't have any rust on it, but there are dents and dings and some damage on the passenger side as shown in the pictures. The clear coat is peeling in places but overall it cleans up pretty well. The interior could use a carpet cleaning, the rug in the picture is just an area rug I laid in there. The seats are not torn up or burned and are in good shape, back seat folds into a bed and middle seats are removable. The drivers side door panel is messed up (see picture) but it doesn't really bother me so I never fixed it. I have the missing piece of plastic for the steering column, forgot to put it on for the picture. The radio will not go with the van.
I still have the original curtains, all in good shape.
Both mats are still in the back, and the back carpet piece. The mats need to be cleaned but the covers appear to come off so they can be machine washed.
Everything works inside except one little dome light in the back, and the drivers side window. Its equipped with cruise but is missing the vacuum piece for the engine, mine was trash and I didn't replace it.
Also, the van does have A/C and it did work before the rebuild. I haven't put any Freon in it or put a belt on it since, because I honestly just didn't want to spend the money to fill it because I don't really care about A/C.
This van is a solid vehicle. It could use a little love, or just drive it like it is if you don't mind a little ugly. All the overly difficult German engineered and highly expensive work has been done, and it pains me to get rid of this thing right at the end...c'est la vie I suppose.

J.D. Power customer survey of dealers counts Cadillac, Buick as big winners
Mon, 14 Apr 2014Cadillac and Buick have taken the trophies in J.D. Power's latest Customer Service Index Study examining satisfaction with dealer service. Surveying more than 90,000 owners and lessees of 2009-2013 model-year cars, the study found that those with pre-paid maintenance packages were ten percent more likely to buy their next car from the same brand.
Dealer satisfaction scores have improved overall, Cadillac nabbed the luxury segment ahead of Audi and Lexus, taking the crown that Lexus held last year. Buick keeps the mass-market dealer satisfaction win in the family, finishing ahead of Volkswagen and last year's winner GMC. The study also found that service department use of tablets increased customer satisfaction, as did "best practices" like "providing helpful advice." Who knew?
You can find details on those and more findings in the press release below.
2014 Volkswagen Golf GTD is our favorite oil-burning GTI
Tue, 05 Mar 2013
The 2014 Volkswagen Golf GTD has officially bowed at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Engineers managed to squeeze an additional 14 horsepower and 22 pound-feet of torque out of the familiar 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, nudging total output to 184 hp and 280 lb-ft for 2014. The figures are good enough to earn the GTD the honor of being the most powerful diesel Golf in Volkswagen history. A start/stop system helps improve efficiency over the previous generation with the new model consuming 56 miles per gallon on the EU cycle. That's up from the 2013 model's 46 mpg. A six-speed manual transmission is standard equipment, though a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox is also available.
The GTD also offers buyers a few aesthetic tweaks to help separate the hatch from its less potent siblings. Those include a more aggressive front fascia, special badges and 17-inch alloy wheels. Expect to find the GTD in one of three exterior colors, including Tornado Red, Black and Pure White. Check out the quick press release below for more details.
