So, what we have for sale here is best described as an excellent donor vehicle to convert your nice 2wd Vanagon into a Syncro. All of the relevant Syncro parts are there and in decent shape, but the body shell is as you can see, pretty terrible. I don't have a ton of history on this vehicle, bought it in New York a few years ago with the idea that i'd either fix it up and drive it or swap parts over to the blue van you can see in a couple of the pictures, but never got around to either. It was in some sort of accident with the previous owner, I think I remember him saying something like a Kia or something ran into the side of it. I did have it running at one point, the engine didn't sound good, so I wouldn't presume anything about that, more recently it stopped starting because one of the injectors rusted out and popped apart. Yup, the injector rusted out. It's a pretty rusty vehicle in some places. I haven't driven it anywhere but around the driveway, but everything seemed to more or less work, the drive shaft is out of the van and sitting on the floor, was in good shape as far as I recall. Previous owner claimed the viscous coupling had been recently replaced. The suspension parts that are specific to the Syncro are in pretty good shape. If there's anything specific that I didn't picture that would be useful to know, I can do my best to take pictures and post them up here. In case you missed it, this is not a vehicle that you should expect to come and pick up and drive home, it doesn't run, and that's probably the least of it's issues at this point. Best bet here would be to get a hold of me and come take a look at the van, bring your trailer and some cash and either take it or leave it. Link to all the pictures I have of it is Here . Volkswagen planning Up! hybrid model using XL1 powertrain
Sun, 24 Feb 2013Even though we've finally gotten a look at the production version of the 261-mile per gallon Volkswagen XL1, this aero-shaped two-seater was never intended for high-volume sales. Fortunately, it sounds like the same isn't true for the car's diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain, which, according to a report from AutoCar, could make its way under the hood of another Volkswagen model: the Up! minicar (shown above).
A potential Up! Hybrid would likely be able to return some of the same impressive fuel economy numbers as the XL1, but it would be a more realistic car with more passenger space and greater production capacity. The hand-built XL1 will use a 47-horsepower, two-cylinder TDI engine paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the 27-hp electric motor and lithium-ion battery helps deliver an all-electric driving range of 31 miles.
One of the core pillars of the XL1's design is its lightweight construction with a 1752-pound curb weight, which makes the Up! a perfect recipient for using this powertrain since it weighs just 300 pounds more. The report says that the Up! Hybrid is still in the developmental phase, so a production version isn't expected for at least another 18 months.
Volkswagen Golf R Variant ready to haul ass, stuff
Thu, Nov 20 2014Volkswagen seems to be playing a cruel trick on the American automotive public at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It's displaying its sexy Golf R Variant with no clear intention of actually selling the model here. The hot wagon launches in Europe in the spring, but the automaker makes absolutely no mention of the model's prospects in the US. Hopefully, its appearance in LA at least indicates VW is considering bringing it stateside. The great thing about this wagon is that it has everything that the regular Golf R offers, but there's even more room to carry stuff. The same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine makes 296 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox and 4Motion all-wheel drive. Performance is very close, too, with the Variant R taking 5.1 seconds to get to 62 miles per hour versus the 4.9 seconds the standard R needs to read 60 mph. The two of them also have the same tech goodies like ESC Sport stability control and multiple damping modes. The real advantage to opting for the estate is its ability to carry up to 57.2 cubic feet of cargo in the back. This hot rod wagon would seem to be perfect for the family that needs to haul some extra junk in the trunk, but doesn't want to sacrifice performance. Whether the Variant R makes it to the US remains a mystery, though. Scroll down to read the specs and feel a twinge of jealousy.
Car and Driver shows off awesome 1960s ads
Fri, Sep 11 2015Someone must have recently rediscovered the keys to the archives at Car and Driver, and the access has been put to good use. Following last month's fantastic look at automotive ads from the '50s, there's now a new gallery running from March 1960 through December 1969. This collection provides a great overview of a decade full of iconic cars. If you're a fan of Carroll Shelby, particularly his Mustangs, then there's a lot to love among this group. One ad from July 1965 aimed to sell the GT350, but with an ocean of text and a tiny picture, it probably could've used a once-over by Don Draper's team. By December '65, the copywriters ironed out the problems with a spot proclaiming boldly "Shelby GT350 is 'Son of Cobra.'" The company offered some great accessories, too. For those into European motoring, there's a humorous attempt to sell the Alfa Romeo Giulia as both a racecar and family hauler. Toyota also boasts about the winning record for the 2000GT. Among the best text comes from BMW for lines like: "What's BMW got? The most advanced high-performance engine in any production car, for a cruising speed of 100 mph." Of course, Volkswagen's famous "Lemon" ad for the Beetle also gets its due here. Separately, each of these ads is fascinating, but taken together they tell the story of a great decade of motoring.
