Our beautiful camper Mr. Belvedere is up for sale!

He has gone through an extensive, expensive, meticulous, and pain staking restoration with mega attention detail.

He should be in a showroom in his current condition but was made to hit the road and go camping!

For starters, the original paint, accident, and rust free body was prepped for new paint by removing all trim, bumpers, lights, and accessories, including pop top!
This is the only way to do it right just like the factory would have painted him back in the day to prevent overspray, etc.
Minor dings and scratches were fixed and $6500 dollars later, he now sports a Dupont 2 stage base coat/clear coat Bronze Beige Metallic, the entire van was color sanded and buffed to perfection. You only see this extra step that I took found on show car applications as it is laborious and expensive. The cost of the entire paint job did not include all my time taking all the parts off the Westy and putting everything back on.
I can now show off his beautiful shine not shying away from those up close photos everyone else avoids.

The pop top and luggage rack was also removed , prepped, primered , wet sanded and has the same detailed base coat/clear coat treatment but I wanted 5 coats of clear coat for excellent protection against the direct sun contact.
All front luggage area tie downs were removed, refinished and installed with all stainless steel nuts/bolts/washers.
While all the pieces were off the body, I upgraded his bumpers to late model OEM VW fiberglass bumpers. These bumpers alone was $500 . Both Bumpers were completely dismantled, sanded, prepped, primered, wet sanded and painted to match with same attention to detail and finish. All the bumper hardware was completely refinished in satin black.
Headlights are OEM VW restored , they were completely taken apart, all the bulbs were removed and cleaned from the inside of all 4 lens, no more fogged up lens. Low beam bulbs were replaced with brand new Sylvania Ultra halogen bulbs, much brighter than stock.
Factory power mirrors were completely taken apart, all glass, electric motors were removed, prepped, primered, wet sanded and painted to match perfectly to the body color.

Both Front end , and side intake grills was completely cleaned, sanded, prepped and re-finished in satin black. The front grill now has a brand new, super rare genuine German VW emblem as he deserves.

Brand new German rear side marker lights with new seals.
Pop top and luggage rack have new seals to keep the moisture and rain out and new Westfalia decals finish the pop top paint and restoration.
The sunroof/skylight is also brand new as well as the stainless nuts/bolts . Brand new sunroof seal and velcro finishes and completes the whole sunroof restoration

No expense was spared with installing the
brand new tan cotton 3 window pop top , the same material that the VW factory used only this one has 3 windows for cross ventilation.
Fabric is nice and taught when top is up.

He has a brand new front windshield with integrated tint strip replaced just a year ago. . .no more old pitted windshield after seeing many miles on the road.
New front washer nozzles and new Goodyear wiper blades keep the windshield dirt and bug free.

All the windows are tinted to keep the sunrays out of the van and to keep you cooler inside(this was done by the previous owner).

I upgraded his side camping hookups with new GoWesty units which are a superior in design to the factor
y ones and are super easy to use. More details on their webside:

http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details.php?id=23582&category_id=127&category_parent_id

All the door handle seals, power mirror seals, escutcheon slider door seal are brand new.
All door handles as well as the front wipers were completely stripped and refinished in satin black.

Onto the camping equipment:
Kitchen area is nice and clean and has not seen much use.
Both burners work perfectly and water pours out of faucet with twist of knob.
Propane tank was completely dismantled, inspected was re-powder coated , new filler and bleed valves. The tank now has brand new propane filled to the top, a work of art in itself. And a brand new genuine German driver's side mud flap to keep debris off the propane tank.
Refrigerator works on both ac / dc mode as well as in propane mode as evidenced by the lighted panel and the lighted peep hole inside the refrigerator
.

The entire air conditioning unit has been completely gone through by the previous owner and works perfectly . The a/c compressor is a rebuilt unit.

The engine is a fully rebuilt VW 2.1 liter motor done by S & S , more about them here: http://subaruperformanceengines.com/ with receipt of rebuild. They have been in the business of building racing motors for both VW and Subaru.  Engine now has new piston/cylinders, new rod bearings, new main bearings, new cam bearings, new lifters, new high volume oil pump, new water pump, rebuilt crankshaft,  rebuilt cam shaft, there are only 50 miles on the engine since full rebuild. 4 brand new motor mounts ensures a nice solid foundation for the new motor. Both heads are rebuilt units sold by GoWesty the best in the business, more about just the heads here: http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details.php?id=4224&category_id=&category_parent_id=

I spent over $4500 in the total engine rebuild.

I also upgraded the thermostat housing made by GoWesty along with brand new thermostat, more on it here:

 http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details.php?id=23281&category_id=&category_parent_id=

Fuel lines was completely replaced from the gas tank all the way back to every lines inside the engine bay a year ago. New fuel filter was just done. I replaced all the fuel injector inner and outer seals, new intake runner boots. All the intake housing as well as the intake manifold was completely refinished.

Alternator is a fully rebuilt German unit.

Every part of the motor has been either upgraded or made more reliable. I believe in doing things right the first time.

He is mechanically sound and quiet as a fox on the road with excellent power.

He starts right up and purs like a kitten. No engine lights or issues and of course, no oil leaks!
He passes california's strict emission standards.
Engine area is also picture perfect. Pictures speak for themselves, but all engine external bits have been refinished or new including sandblasted and refinished headers, new muffler, new exhaust tip, new GoWesty stainless steel catalytic converter(info on that here:

http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details.php?id=23533&category_id=&category_parent_id=

with new stainless steel hardware, and refinished/cleaned all the engine tins. New low and high pressure oil pressure switches, new oil pressure switch wiring kit, New Bosch cap, new Bosch rotor, new air filter, new spark plugs, new Bosch plug wires, and 3 new serpentine belts.
Full radiator service with complete flush, expansion and reservoir tank removal and cleansing, and topped him off and bleed the whole cooling system with new phosphate free coolant.

3 speed automatic transmission has been fully serviced and shifts smoothly. Both differential and automatic transmission drain pans was removed, refinished in gloss black, both fluids was completely drained and refilled. Both pan gaskets as well as the transmission filter replaced. Brand new cap seals, O rings has been replaced. Transmission adjusted for proper speed settings. It does not leak a drop of oil and is super clean. Both rear cv axles are rebuilt units.

I also replaced the torque converter purchased from GoWesty the best in the business.
I did a real number on the braking system and refreshed the whole system with new rotors, new rebuilt calipers, new brake pads, and new rubber brake hoses up front.
Rears got the same treatment with new drums, new brake hardware, new wheel cylinders, and new shoes.
Everything that I didn't replace was cleaned and painted new.
Entire brake system was then flushed.
Needless to say, he stops on a dime.

Front brakes have brand new inner, outer wheel bearings, new seals . While everything was apart, I went ahead and put in new upper and lower ball joints up front and new tie rods. New power steering boots. New sway arm bushings also installed.
4 wheel alignment done after everything replaced.
Steering is nice and tight with no slop, shaking, or shimmering going down the highway and as good as new.
He now rides on 4 brand new KYB shock absorbers, ride is nice and firm.

Wheels are upgraded to brand new GoWesty 15 inch alloys wrapped in brand new Michelin Defender tires 215/65/15. New lugs and bolts. http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details.php?id=23808&category_id=143&category_parent_id=. A brand new lug wrench is also included, as well as latex gloves, hand rag and a set of stock lug nuts/bolts in case of a flat tire stored inside a custom tailored bag. I also purchased a brand new spare just in case of a mishap on the road.

Whole inside of westy has been detailed, shampooed and cleaned and smells brand new. Front seat bolsters are still nice and firm. The upper bedding is in beautiful shape and was completely removed and cleaned.

The rear seat lower cushion does have some small flaws see picture

A complete set of all weather front/middle/center all weather hex floor mats from GoWesty to protect the floor surfaces.

Tunes come from a brand new Kenwood head unit with Am/FM, CD, bluetooth, Pandora,  USB, IPOD hookup ready. New antennae to catch all the tunes outside.

To keep the road noise out and tunes inside, Dynamat insulation was used in both front doors, slider door and rear hatch . This stuff works really well and used extensively in competition stereo jobs. front doors close with a solid thump, like a Mercedes.

Included is a Tom Tom GO 740 Live navigation unit which is super easy to use complete with owner's manual.

I have put a lot of pride, sweat, and joy into my restoration and will put it up against a GoWesty restoration any day in every detail. You may find my van much nicer in many ways as much attention to detail was taken sometimes far and beyond what was needed!

I have priced my westy at fraction of what GoWesty may charge for a similar restoration.
He has not been camped in since restoration and is stored in my garage.
I am to afraid to get a scratch on him. I hope his new owner will take him back on the road and enjoy another 30 years of service.
I would not hesitate to drive him across the country and back.

Please enjoy all the pictures and do not hesitate to ask me any questions or about any details I may have forgotten.
Inspections and personal drive tests are more than welcome.

FYI: Carfax and Autocheck is as clean as can be. The only discrepancy was back in 2009 the owner who lived in Arizona had owned the van reported that the odometer was out of order at approximately 168,031 as he was not using it much up until the time he sold the westy to a couple who lived in Utah on 03/31/2011. I purchased the Westy from that couple on 03/31/2013, coincidental right, exactly 2 years apart. They explained to me that they only used the van for approximately 1500 miles since the purchase, they had the vehicle transported to Utah when they purchased it. I have since fixed the odometer when the van was in my possession and it is now in perfect working order. I estimate the total miles to be around 170xxx  miles.

I will help the winning bidder find a shipper if you require it, or pick you up at the San Luis Obispo airport and drive her home.

Regarding my reserve, I have easily spent over $20,000 in just restoration costs, this does not even include all my personal time that I put into the van, all the time running around getting parts, plus the original purchase price of the Westfalia.

If you have any other questions feel free to send me an email.

Volkswagen recalls 20k Routans to replace ignition switch

Thu, Apr 16 2015

Volkswagen is recalling 20,676 examples of the 2009-2010 Routan minivan to replace their key fobs and ignition switches. This new campaign is linked to one from FCA in March. In these vehicles, it's possible that if the switch is jarred, the key can be jostled out of the Run position. If this happens, then the engine shuts off, and the airbags, power steering and power brakes are all deactivated, which is a safety problem. The campaign to fix this issue began last year when FCA recalled 700,000 minivans, and the Routan was also affected because of its shared platform. However, in March 2015 FCA updated its recall to replace the whole ignition switch with an improved design, rather than the original plan of just a new detent ring. With this latest update, the VWs are getting the same fix. Until the minivans are repaired, VW says that drivers should remove all items from their key ring, including the fob. The recall is expected to begin in April for owners of the 2009 Routan and in August for the 2010 models, according to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (available here as a PDF). Some vehicles already have a new detent ring under the earlier recall, but they still need to be fixed again to get the ignition switch. Related Video: RECALL Subject : Ignition Switch may Turn Off Report Receipt Date: APR 01, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V194000 Component(s): ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Potential Number of Units Affected: 20,676 All Products Associated with this Recall Vehicle Make Model Model Year(s) VOLKSWAGEN ROUTAN 2009-2010 Details Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. SUMMARY: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2009 Routan vehicles manufactured June 25, 2008, to June 10, 2009, and 2010 Routan vehicles manufactured October 1, 2009, to August 11, 2010. This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. CONSEQUENCE: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including, but not limited to, air bags, power steering, and power braking.

Audi spending an additional $2.5 billion on expansion through 2019

Thu, Jan 1 2015

Every year, it seems the Volkswagen Group announces a new and larger spend to push growth and profit, with Audi a regular recipient of the moolah. That's reasonable, seeing as hauls in 40 percent of Group operating profits. In December last year Audi said it would spend an additional 100 million euros ($122M US) per year through 2018 to develop new models and expand production, targeting 60 models by 2020 and luxury sales leadership. This month Audi said it will boost that by another two billion euros ($2.5B US) over the next five years, for a total outlay of 24 billion euros from 2014 to 2019. Something like 70 percent of those billions will be spent on new models, technology like "connectivity and lightweight construction," and factory expansion at its plants in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. Most of the ten models that will plump the lineup to 60 cars will mainly be aimed at the C and D segments, as well as crossovers, the brand's burgeoning portfolio of PHEV models, and all-electric cars that will begin staking ground in the segment. The big spend comes at the same time as Audi is working hard to reduce costs by $2.5 billion to maintain profitability, part of a larger push by VW to cut costs by $6.1 billion by 2017. More than a billion euros will go to new factories in Mexico and Brazil. Work begins on the Mexico plant next year, and when it comes on-line in 2016, Audi's Q5 successor will roll out of its warehouse doors; Audi has already announced it will hire 850 more workers next year in Mexico. When that's done, Mexico's production of German luxury cars will only trail that of Germany, China and the US. The company's Brazil plant will produce the A3 and S3 starting next year, and the brand figures luxury car buying there will triple by 2017.
