Quiet as a mouse, smooth as butter, comfortable as a Caddy. Words to describe "Uncle Albert", our 1986 Vanagon.

Mechanically its in great shape, I drive it every day. Odometer stopped working at 139,000 and it has about 10,000 more miles on it since then. Motor was rebuilt in the early 2000's and is so very smooth. It is a 4 speed manual, I just never can go for an Auto VW, takes away the spirit of the thing.

Since it is a weekender it has the bigger bed and no 30 year old gas lines to worry about. Seats 6 or 7 comfortably and sleeps 4 or 5.

Paint is ok and original. You can see by my "Sport Stripe" on the side that I had a little rust on that seam which is common. I treated it but have not repainted it. Everything else including the underside is very nice and rust free.

All the seats have covers because all the seats have tears on the seat portion. Foam is great, just needs new seat covers on the seat.

Radio ate a cassette tape (Beatles no less!) so the cassette is currently out of order but the radio and speakers are awesome. Tires are in great shape, seats have some tears so they wear covers on the bottom portion. The rear Bed pillow is in my garage and I use a black rubber mat for chores and such.

Dont really need to sell, just been camping in it and having a good time at festivals. I might trade it for something VW pre 1967. Beetles with open roofs both Sun and Vert would be cool or a nice Karm or Thing. Course I like bus trucks too. So just send me a photo with your offer to sjonz@bellsouth.net

Carlex Criollo is a Volkswagen Multivan shrine to Alcantara, leather and... fish

Wed, 10 Jul 2013

A keen angler recently went to Polish tuner Carlex Design (the same folks who did that steampunk Mini Countryman a while back) for a revamp of his Volkswagen Multivan. What resulted is perhaps the most striking - yet fishing-unfriendly - interior we've ever seen in a van. Below the shoulder line, if a surface isn't covered in cross-stitched Alcantara, then it's covered in cross-stitched leather. Even the steering wheel airbag boss. And the seat supports. And the cupholders.
The brown hue of the Multivan's interior is called Criollo, named for an especially fine specimen of cocoa. The finishing touch on the overhaul is a fileting knife that Carlex made for the owner. We imagine he'll use the knife for the marine life, but keep his van far away from it.

Volkswagen Routan dead, pour out a sippy cup for your little homies

Thu, 28 Mar 2013

America's minivan wolfpack has just gotten smaller by one. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen officials have confirmed what we've suspected for some time - the Routan is dead. Essentially a lightly reworked version of the Dodge Grand Caravan, the Routan actually hasn't been rolling off of Chrysler's Windsor, Ontario production line at all this year, but VW had yet to confirm its discontinuation. However, Jonathan Browning, CEO of VW America, has reportedly admitted that the Routan is being axed, with remaining units expected to be funneled into corporate functions for "internal purposes."
The move isn't unexpected - the Routan has never been a big seller, with just 57,650 examples moved since sales began in 2008 - peak yearly sales totaled under 16,000 units, and that was back in 2010. And while many have talked of the minivan segment shrinking, Automotive News points out that the segment actually grew 14 percent last year to 597,118 units, though it should be noted that most segments have been on sales upticks as the US economy chugs out of its recession.
So, is volume-crazy Volkswagen prepared to pass on large family vehicle sales? Probably not - the German automaker has signaled that it plans to build a three-row crossover in North America soon, and we wouldn't be surprised if it looks an awful lot like the Crossblue Concept from January's Detroit Auto Show - minus the fancy plug-in diesel powertrain.

Touring the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg

Mon, 23 Sep 2013

Forgive the ribbon up top - this isn't so much of a Read This as a Look At This. Ran When Parked took a tour of the sprawling Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, and while there's a spot of text about the different and unique vehicles on display in the rotating exhibits, it's largely the collection of pictures of odd, one-off VW-badged cars and vans that excites. If you're a fan of the weird and wild, this is a post you'll want to look at.
As RWP points out, this is the larger, but less busy, museum targeted purely at Volkswagen products. The smaller AutoStadt museum, meanwhile, covers a much broader swath, with products from other Volkswagen Group members.
