1984 Volkswagen Vanagon Camper Pop-up Fuel Injected 1.9l
The good:
Vehicle is in over all great condition. Engine was rebuilt at 136,651 with replacement injectors, heads, thermostat and intake manifold boots. All records and manuals were kept since first owned. Only 30,000 miles on rebuild!
- Clean title in hand, please feel free to see the clean CarFax.
- New GoWesty updated LP tank with the new style regulator. I was going to install a refrigerator delete kit and my energy efficient Engel fridge/freezer MT45 cooler (cost me about $1000) that was installed in my other Vanagon, I just never got around to it. I also purchased the Coleman port-o-potty that sells on GoWesty’s website that slides under the shelf of the delete kit to be used in case of an "emergancy" (no worries, it was not used). All three of these will be included (Engel refrigerator/freezer, the Coleman port-o-potty and the GoWesty fridge delete kit) with the purchase of the Vanagon if the Buy it Now is used. The original operating refriderator is still installed with the original line. Currently it's disconnected using a brass fitting which can be reversed if the new owner wishes to do so.
- New GoWesty skylight.
- Water tank holds fine and works great with the sink.
- Stove is nice and clean and operates fine.
- All lights are operating and vehicle is running strong.
- A dealer installed Behr Air Conditioning unit is installed on the vehicle. I did remove the compressor to use it to check another buddy’s AC operation to confirm that his compressor was the problem…it was. I reinstalled the compressor but did not hook the AC lines and belt backup, I wanted to replace the o-rings before I did. I eventually got the o-rings, but never got around to installing them. I will throw those in with the purchase of the vehicle.
- Captain’s chairs are in good shape and operate freely.
- New battery.
- Tires are in good shape. If the Buy It Now is used I will also throw in (5) 16” Audi A4 aluminum five spoke rims that had the centers professionally machined out to fit the hub center on the Vanagon (cost me about $700).
- Upgraded heavy duty rear hatch struts.
- Original bug screens and shades are included.
- A Thule cargo rack with load bars and AeroCargo container is included. I had it installed on my last Vanagon and just have not installed it on this one (pictures can be sent on request, it currently is not installed). It's great for camping, gives you a secure place to store items out of the way of the site (cost me about $1000).
- The pop-up was replaced with an up-graded three sided screened unit with “zipper” screen windows, which is in excellent condition with no rips or tears.
The not so good:
- The paint is starting to bubble a little bit in the typical Vanagon areas (see photos).
- There is a oil leak coming from the front main seal (if this is corrected the engine would be dry).
- There are various “dings/dents” on the body, the most notable is the on the p/s door (cause by a faulty mirror that was fixed, see photos).
- The heater core switch above the spare wheel is pushed open so heat constantly comes out on your feet (I can switch it back for the person who purchases it). I just liked it because it kept the cabin warm in the winter and the engine cool in the summer. I was going to but a manual switch under the dash like everyone else, I just never got around to it.
- The table behind the driver's side captain's chair is missing.
- The arm rests on the driver's and passenger side doors are missing.
- The small rubber step-up mat on the passenger side is missing.
- The small brown door latch on the water tank access door is broken.
- The curtains could use to be replaced; they are sun bleached pretty bad but operate fine.
This was an original California Vanagon, that went to Colorado and now resides in NJ. It just needs a home that will love it as much as we do. I am moving to the city and parking is very limited and costly. It’s not in my best interest to take this with me, but at the same time I will not give it away. If I have to pay for parking just to keep it, I will. It’s a great vehicle and hate to see it go. I have included MANY high resolution photos for a further visual inspection. Please be advised that I have this vehicle listed locally and there is a possibility that the auction can end early. Cashier's check, money order or cash transaction. $500 dollar deposit upon auction close via Paypal.

The UK votes for Brexit and it will impact automakers
Fri, Jun 24 2016It's the first morning after the United Kingdom voted for what's become known as Brexit – that is, to leave the European Union and its tariff-free internal market. Now begins a two-year process in which the UK will have to negotiate with the rest of the EU trading bloc, which is its largest export market, about many things. One of them may be tariffs, and that could severely impact any automaker that builds cars in the UK. This doesn't just mean companies that you think of as British, like Mini and Jaguar. Both of those automakers are owned by foreign companies, incidentally. Mini and Rolls-Royce are owned by BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover by Tata Motors of India, and Bentley by the VW Group. Many other automakers produce cars in the UK for sale within that country and also export to the EU. Tariffs could damage the profits of each of these companies, and perhaps cause them to shift manufacturing out of the UK, significantly damaging the country's resurgent manufacturing industry. Autonews Europe dug up some interesting numbers on that last point. Nissan, the country's second-largest auto producer, builds 475k or so cars in the UK but the vast majority are sent abroad. Toyota built 190k cars last year in Britain, of which 75 percent went to the EU and just 10 percent were sold in the country. Investors are skittish at the news. The value of the pound sterling has plummeted by 8 percent as of this writing, at one point yesterday reaching levels not seen since 1985. Shares at Tata Motors, which counts Jaguar and Land Rover as bright jewels in its portfolio, were off by nearly 12 percent according to Autonews Europe. So what happens next? No one's terribly sure, although the feeling seems to be that the jilted EU will impost tariffs of up to 10 percent on UK exports. It's likely that the UK will reciprocate, and thus it'll be more expensive to buy a European-made car in the UK. Both situations will likely negatively affect the country, as both production of new cars and sales to UK consumers will both fall. Evercore Automotive Research figures the combined damage will be roughly $9b in lost profits to automakers, and an as-of-yet unquantified impact on auto production jobs. Perhaps the EU's leaders in Brussels will be in a better mood in two years, and the process won't devolve into a trade war. In the immediate wake of the Brexit vote, though, the mood is grim, the EU leadership is angry, and investors are spooked.
2015 Green Car Of The Year finalists announced, run alt-fuel gamut
Tue, Oct 21 2014The 2015 edition of the Green Car of the Year award is following right in the footsteps of previous years with a variety of alt-fuel powertrains making the just-announced finalists list. You've got your plug-in vehicle (the BMW i3), your compressed natural gas (the Chevy Impala Bi-Fuel), your high-efficiency diesel (the Audi A3 TDI), your 40+ mile-per-gallon gas engine (the Honda Fit) and, finally, a car that can do a little bit of everything (the VW Golf). The Golf is available – at least in some parts of the US – with three different powertrains: a 2.0-liter diesel, a gasoline engine and all-electric drive. The Impala can burn either natural gas or gasoline in its 3.6-liter engine. The A3 is an efficiency champ, able to get 73.5 mpg on some European tests. The i3 can be a pure electric vehicle or come with a short range extending engine. And the Fit brings 41 miles to the gallon in a practical, affordable package. The GCOY award is announced every year at the Los Angeles Auto Show by Green Car Journal. The committee doesn't just take the fuel-saving technology into account, but also a vehicle's "availability to the mass market." Last year, the Honda Accord Hybrid/Plug-In Hybrid won top honors, following up on wins from the Ford Fusion models (plug-in hybrid and hybrid) for 2013, the Honda Civic Natural Gas for 2012 and the Chevrolet Volt for 2011. FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR 2015 "GREEN CAR OF THE YEAR"" Green Car Journal to Reveal Winner of 10th Annual Award at LA Auto Show" Press & Trade Days, November 20 LOS ANGELES, CA (October 21, 2014) – Green Car Journal has announced its five finalists for the magazine's high-profile 2015 Green Car of the Year® program. The 2015 models include the Audi A3 TDI, BMW i3, Chevrolet Impala Bi-Fuel, Honda Fit, and VW Golf. The Green Car of the Year® award, an honor widely recognized as the auto industry's most important environmental accolade, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. An increasing number of vehicle models are considered for the Green Car of the Year® program each year, a reflection of the auto industry's expanding efforts in offering new vehicles with higher efficiency and improved environmental impact. Green Car Journal has been honoring the most important "green" vehicles every year at the LA Auto Show, since its inaugural award announced at the show in 2005.
Volkswagen's De Silva says next Scirocco will be 'completely different'
Tue, 02 Apr 2013From our perspective, the reborn Volkswagen Scirocco is a handsome (if squat) little thing. Yet design-wise, it's always struck us as uncomfortably close to the Golf three-door hatchback with which it shares its basic underpinnings. That aesthetic kinship may be part of the reason why Volkswagen has steadfastly refused to import the Scirocco to North America, seeing as how the Golf doesn't regularly set the company's sales charts alight, and it's less expensive.
But that visual similarity might be about to change, says Walter De Silva, who recently told Australia's Car Advice that, "It must be completely different... we don't want to repeat the bodystyle of the Scirocco, we want to change that." Further, the Volkswagen Group's design boss says that the next-generation car isn't terribly far along in development yet - "at the moment, it's only a studio [project]... it's not defined." It's probably just as well, as the new seventh-generation Golf arguably borrows some of its design from the current Scirocco anyway.
So we should expect a much bolder, more differentiated design, right? Well, yes, no and maybe. Back in September, De Silva himself was quoted as saying that the era of flamboyant styling has passed, and that future VW designs will be simpler to better reflect the times and preserve resale value. So... how different could it be?
