For sale is a 1979 Volkswagen Deluxe Campmobile that is in great original shape. I've had her for over nine years but really haven't taken her camping in a very long time and going back to school full time means I am not likely to use her in the foreseeable future either. It is time to let her go to a family who will give her the attention and use that she deserves.

This is an original California camper that I bought and brought to Arizona so rust is not an issue, this is a very solid Volkswagen. The paint is a respray of the original Mexican beige color that was done by the previous owner about ten years or so ago but is still shiny and looks nice. The only rust that I know of is some light surface rust in the rear rain gutter under the pop top portion of the roof. There is also some light rust under the front windshield as well a little rust in the battery tray. Other than that she is rust free and the undercarriage and frame are still nicely coated with original protectant keeping them looking amazing.

The camper runs very smooth with good power from a completely rebuilt 2.0 liter type four engine with a little more than 600 miles since being rebuilt this past year. The engine also has completely rebuilt Italian dual Weber 40 IDF carburetors. Over three thousand dollars were invested in getting the engine running just right. Should provide many many years of faithful service going forward.

Odometer shows 46,782 miles on it but there is no hundred thousand column so I cannot verify the mileage but would assume that given the age the odometer has probably turned over once and the actual mileage is most likely 146,782 miles but she still drives and stops nicely. Emergency brake is very strong and hold the camper put nicely.

The camping equipment is all there, sink, stove, and refrigerator but none of them have been used for many years. I have not tried testing them but they worked when last used. This camper easily sleeps four adults with room for two in the upper bunk and two in the lower fold down bed. I do not have one but the brackets are located above the front seats to hold a small cot that can sleep an extra child if you bought the necessary cot.

Due to the Arizona heat, some of the laminate of the camper cabinets is beginning to peel up. Overall the laminate is still in good condition despite the peeling up and should only need to be glued back down. The heat has also been rough on the rubber window seals which are cracking, some of which will eventually need to be replaced. The drivers seat has a tear on both the upper and lower parts toward the driver's side door and could use reupholstering at some point. The passenger side door panel vinyl has also started peeling away from the pressboard. I have attempted to glue it back down but again the heat has been fighting this attempt.

The tires are relatively new and in great shape with plenty of tread left on them.

Included with the bus are some harder to find original accessories like the rear door mosquito net, large kitchen table, the small snack table that attaches to the front dashboard between the front seats, the hard to find leg for the snack table, a unusual hanger that goes on the snack table which I am not sure what it was meant for (I used it to hold a plastic bag for trash but it may have been a holder for storing the table when not in use), and very rare "Ambulance Fans" have been installed in this camper to help bring fresh air into the camper. I was told the fans had been tested and working when I bought them but I have not had them working because I am not very electrically inclined and haven't brought her in to a specialist to connect them properly. Also included are all of the original curtains (some of which are faded from years in the sun) including the ever elusive front cabin curtain to cover the windshield and front door windows.

Again this is a very straight, clean, and original Volkswagen Campmobile that I hate to part with but between the Arizona heat and school I just have not been using her like I should.

Former Audi chief designer Wolfgang Egger leaves Italdesign

Sat, Dec 27 2014

The latest word from the international community of automotive designers has it that Wolfgang Egger is leaving Italdesign, but just where the accomplished designer will land next and who will take his place remain big question marks. Egger is a designer who has bounced back and forth between Italy and Germany over the course of his career. He was born in Germany but studied in Milan. He began his career at Alfa Romeo in 1989 and was named its chief designer by 1993 before being head-hunted by the Volkswagen Group in 1998 to head up the design department at Seat. A few years later he went returned to Italy to run the Lancia design department, and was subsequently renamed to the same post at Alfa Romeo. In 2007 he went back to his native Germany to head up the Audi design office, over which he assumed complete responsibility by 2012, but left Audi in 2013 to run Italdesign. For those unfamiliar, Italdesign is the studio founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro (pictured at left next to Egger) back in 1968 but which, along with many other Italian design houses, fell on hard times in recent years. The Volkswagen Group swooped in to rescue the troubled studio in 2010, turning it into something of an in-house advanced design department to provide an alternative perspective on the direction in which the group and its various brands could take their respective designs moving forward. With Egger now leaving its helm, Italdesign and its German parent company will need to find his replacement, and we're sure they'll announce one in due course. The bigger question on our minds, however, is where Egger himself will head next. Given the path his career has taken to date, we wouldn't be surprised to see him land elsewhere in the Volkswagen Group or find a new role in the expanding Fiat Chrysler Automobiles empire. Then again, Egger could find it time to open an entirely new chapter. Watch this space. Editors' Picks May 2021 | BMW M3, Toyota Camry and some hot Golfs

Thu, Jun 3 2021

We awarded Editors’ Picks status to a number of performance cars this month, but a couple more regular sedans won out, too. April saw us recognize four models, but that increases to six for May. As the weather warms up here in Michigan, we tend to get into the sports cars that we missed driving all winter, resulting in a sports car-heavy month of testing. That explains why the list this month is so heavy on sports cars and hot hatches. In case you missed our previous couple Editors' Picks posts, hereÂ’s a quick refresher on whatÂ’s going on here. We rate all the new cars we drive with a 1-10 score. Cars that are exemplary in their respective segments get EditorsÂ’ Pick status. Those are the ones weÂ’d recommend to our friends, family and anybody whoÂ’s curious and asks the question. The list that youÂ’ll find below consists of every car we rated in May that earned the honor of being an EditorsÂ’ Pick. 2021 Toyota Camry 2021 Toyota Camry XSE Hybrid View 22 Photos Quick take: The Toyota Camry retains its place as one of the best midsize sedans you can buy. It comes in a variety of trims and powertrains, from the potent TRD model to the fuel-sipping hybrid. It's an attractive, functional and well-rounded car offering value and function. Score: 8.5 What it competes with: Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia K5, Nissan Altima, Mazda6, Subaru Legacy, VW Passat, Chevy Malibu Pros: Highly versatile, efficient hybrid, fun-to-drive sport models Cons: Average infotainment, polarizing exterior, slow base four-cylinder From the editors: Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore — “The Camry is one of the standard bearers in the midsize segment. With many companies abandoning this area, the ones that remain — like Toyota — do it well. Long a bastion of boring design and sleepy driving dynamics, the Camry is now legitimately attractive and offers a range of powertrains. It's a solid entry and along with the Honda Accord, makes the case for midsize sedans to exist." VW planning 20 new plug-in models for China

Thu, Oct 30 2014

With just about everything getting super-sized for China, Volkswagen is following suit with its plug-in vehicle plans for the world's most populous country. VW, Europe's largest carmaker, is looking to sell more than 20 different plug-in models in China within the next four years, Reuters says, citing comments Volkswagen Group China head Jochem Heizmann made in Shanghai. The company is hoping that translates to sales of more than 100,000 plug-ins in China by the end of the decade. Go big or go home, right? There's a huge plug-in vehicle opportunity in China, especially given the bad pollution situation in cities like Beijing and Shanghai and the Chinese government's incentives for plug-in vehicle buyers. Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn said at the Beijing Motor Show this spring that the company would spend $25 billion on at least a half-dozen plug-in models for China by 2018. VW will start selling the e-Golf in China this year and the Golf GTE plug-in hybrid in 2015. VW said in August that it would start selling the e-Golf in the US for about $35,500 in November. That's a $6,500 price hike from the base Nissan Leaf.
