1971 Volkswagen Camper Bus

Pop Top

Justin 503-969-5127

Hello again out there in eBay land.  First, I want to apologize to those of you reading this that are super knowledgeable on the subject of all things Volkswagen and the Bus or Transporter in particular.  While I am a lover and fan, I do not have a deep history of ownership of these vehicles.  I have had a few come in and out of my life and have enjoyed them, I just would not consider myself an expert as many of you may be.  I do know cars however, and this is a nice one.

I received this car from a man who had the dreams of owning and restoring it.  So he bought a solid candidate..  Thank goodness..  This is a 1971 Camper Pop-Top with a rebuilt engine and full documentation of a lifetime of service.  This Bus had been sitting in a garage for years.  It started and ran with a jump but the front brakes were seized and the paint was chipped and faded.  The window seals were old and hard and the interior was beat and tired.  It was very dry though.  This is not a rusty old VW scabbed back to life.  This is a dry and solid vehicle.

He bought the car and had it towed to a really good body shop.  Really good, but really expensive..  The job started out to be reasonably priced, but soon became completely out of control.  For weeks the process drug on..  The shop needing this part and this seal and this lens and before long the bill was the stuff of legend.  Or nightmare..  I got the call from the man that he needed help to figure out what to do.  I went to speak to the shop, and the man showed us some mercy..  It is difficult when you are trying to get good work done from a perfectionist.  They won’t cut corners, even when they should be cut.  Let’s face it, you don’t spend 12k painting a 1971 VW Bus unless you have a pile of cash you want to burn through..   We worked out a deal where I sourced all the seals and parts and bought them wholesale, and he did the work to his standards.  It saved a little and allowed the man to pay the bill without taking a second out on his home..

We got a fantastic paint job.  Show quality..  I mean wow..  Bring out the judges because it is quite the finished product.  New window seals new felt new lenses new glass..  New, new, new..

So, as backwards as this may sound, the guy didn’t do any of the mechanical stuff first.  Dead battery, frozen brakes, and a tired interior on a million dollar body.  We had to tow the Bus to my shop and assess what we were going to do first.  1. Battery, easy done..  2. Brakes, new calipers and pads done..  3.  Test drive..  No clutch at all..  New clutch, resurface flywheel, full job with new motor and trans mounts done..

Luckily the car drove perfect after that..  I say luckily because every light worked, the blinkers, the horn, the gas gage, everything..  The bus drives perfectly.  Solid, no rattles no pulling..  Plenty of power perfect syncros I mean this Bus is all there mechanically.

By this time the owner was really out of money..  We did a new wood floor and carpet, but he had no more money for the rest of the interior.  The Camper looks so nice, that it deserves a beautiful inside too.  Right now it’s totally usable, but my hope is that the buyer keeps with tradition and does the right thing for this VW.  The seats are all there, but need to be recovered and stuffed.  The canvas for the top has some rips in the material and reeds to be replaced.  The sink is missing if you even want one?

The Bus is almost there..  Its really close..  I think it would be a great project for a person that maybe does not know a lot about cars, but has an eye for style..  Finish it how you like and have a vehicle that fits your personality exactly.

I am setting the reserve very low and I know the Bus will sell the first go around as long as we all play by these rules.

#1.  Only bid if you have intentions to buy.

#2. Ask any and all questions before bidding.

#3. Please contact me BEFORE BIDDING if you have zero or negative feedback.

#4. This is an AS-IS sale.  I have done my best to describe it exactly as I see it but it has no warranties or guarantees except a clean and clear legal title after payment.

#5. I will not accept Pay-Pal for the balance payment of the VW.  Pay-Pal is for the deposit only, the balance must be paid by certified check or wire.  Legitimate and legal buyers only please.

Just be real and genuine and I will make sure that the winning bidder is happy with his or her purchase.  I have 100% positive feedback and I plan on keeping that.  Also, I will end the sale for the right offer so don’t wait till the last second and worry about missing out.  Just call me and we will work out a fair price..

Volkswagen's 261-mpg hand-built XL1 headed for Geneva

Thu, 21 Feb 2013

After years of rumors, development and testing, the Volkswagen XL1 is finally about to become a reality. The project that began life as a daring 1-Liter concept car in 2002, will finally get its production-ready curtain call at the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks.
As soon as it hits the streets, the two-seat XL1 will instantly become the most fuel-efficient and most aerodynamic production car in the world. The car uses a plug-in hybrid system to achieve mind-blowing consumption of just 0.9 liters of diesel fuel consumed every 100 kilometers (and average of roughly 261 miles per gallon). Plus, the XL1 can go up to 50 kilometers on its battery power alone. Coefficient of drag is a miniscule 0.189, thanks to a tiny frontal area and an obviously slippery shape.
XL1 power comes from a two-cylinder diesel motor connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the 20 kW electric motor is fed by a lithium-ion battery. Both combine to give the XL1 performance figures that are, while not stirring, not shabby considering its extreme frugality: 0-62 miles per hour comes up in 12.7 seconds and top speed is nearly 146 mph.

Cars with the most reckless drivers are full of surprises

Wed, Oct 13 2021

Insurify is a site for comparing auto insurance quotes. Because insurance shoppers need to submit information like the vehicles they're driving and the infractions they've compiled while driving those vehicles, Insurify has quite the database of correlations tying certain models to a habit of breaking certain laws. When the site's data analysts decided to compile a list of the top ten models for reckless driving citations in the decade from 2010 to 2019, the ranking contained a few wild entries. The Dodge Challenger making the countdown will surprise precisely zero people. But the Saturn L200? First, a definition: USLegal.com defines reckless driving as "driving with a willful or wanton disregard for safety. It is the operation of an automobile under such circumstances and in such a manner as to show a willful or reckless disregard of consequences." So this list is a caution about particular drivers more than the cars. For a baseline, according to Insurify data, for any random model, 15 out of 10,000 people who drive that model have picked up one citation for reckless driving. Back to that Challenger, then. No shocker for being here, but it's actually number 10, with 44 out of 10,000 Challenger drivers nabbed for a willful disregard of consequences on the road. That's better than the first surprise entry, the Saturn L200, a sedan only on sale for six years, with the least horsepower on the list, and out of production since 2005. The data set put drivers of GM's extraterrestrial sedan at 45 reckless pilots per 10,000 drivers. There are two pickups on the list, the only modern one being the Ram 1500 at eighth, with a rate of 46 in 10,000. Somehow, drivers of the third-best-selling pickup in the U.S. outrun the overwhelming numerical superiority of the best-selling vehicle in the States, the Ford F-150. The other pickup is the Chevrolet K1500 at number five, with a rate of 56 in 10,000. This is not only the oldest vehicle on the list, it went out of production in 2002, before any other vehicle on the list. Between the trucks, the Volkswagen CC slotted in at seven with 47 in 10,000 reckless driving chits, the Cadillac ATS slipped into sixth with 48 in 10,000.  The top four is a bag of unexpected. The Nissan 370Z is the first hardcore sports car on the list at number four, with 61 in 10,000 Z drivers flaunting their Fairladys in the face of Johnny Law.

Sunday Drive: Variety is the spice of life

Sun, Nov 12 2017

If there's any one new vehicle the entire world is anxiously waiting for, it's the Jeep Wrangler. Yes, of course the iconic off-roader has a loyal following here in America, but you could plop a Wrangler pretty much anywhere on the globe and everybody will know what it is. Put simply, the redesigned 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL has big, muddy shoes to fill, and the readers of Autoblog are just as interested in the Wrangler's rebirth as anyone else. Moving along, we were fortunate enough last week to spend a bit of time in nearly every version of the venerable Volkswagen Golf all in one day. There isn't a Golf we don't like, but there's one, easily identifiable by its three-digit name, that stands above all the rest: GTI. We think it's the best Golf you can buy, even if there's an R-badged variant that slots above the GTI in VW hierarchy. Rounding out our recap are three vehicles that could hardly be more different. The 2019 GMC Sierra, which was seen wearing pretty light camouflage, is a truck. The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio – which isn't going to go on sale, ever, at any price – is a conceptual supercar. And the Honda CB1000R is a retro-themed naked standard motorcycle. Variety really is the spice of life. 2018 Jeep Wrangler spy shot mega gallery Driving nearly every VW Golf: Base, GTI, R, Alltrack — here's what we learned 2019 GMC Sierra spied sporting just a thin wrapping The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio is a brutally fantastic EV supercar concept Honda unveils 2 new motorcycles, including retro-flavored CB1000R Image Credit: Brian Williams GMC Honda Jeep Lamborghini Volkswagen Technology Truck Convertible Crossover Hatchback SUV Performance sunday drive vw golf gti lamborghini terzo millennio
