Now on the block is my 1970 VW bus. I made a lot of progress with the interior and mechanical restoration of this bus, but have come to a stopping point due to time and other projects, and it is time to move this to someone else and continue the journey.
The bus is originally from Long beach, California, and spent the majority of it's life there. The body is very typical of a California bus. some of the window seals are dry and need to be replaced, but no body cancer to deal with. The motor is a twin carb that has been overhauled, valves recently adjusted, and runs like a sewing machine. The transmission and clutch work very well, doesn't pop out of any gear.
I replaced the rear wheel bearings, hubs, and brakes. I also replaced the center steering pin (big job), steering gear and the steering damper to get the wander out of the front end. The bus has brand new Hankook tires that are bus rated (don't just put passenger tires on these) all around.
The interior is all new by TMI, new panels, carpet, seat covers, and glove box. I even added a new reproduction radio and new antenna (didn't cut up the dash, but it has an ipod input).
I have new seat covers for the front two seats, but couldn't bear to put them on because the existing ones are in such good shape, and was saving them for the total restoration. Same thing with the new steering wheel on the back seat. I also have the original window for the sliding door if you want to go back to bone stock.
So what does it need?
My top priority would be a headliner, but you really should decide if you want to do a repaint and put new window rubbers as part of the process. I couldn't decide, so here we are.
Could use a paint job, but everyone who sees it says leave it alone and drive it.
The gas gauge doesn't work, but the odometer does, so just keep an eye on it and you'll be fine until you decide to replace it.
The headlights, taillights, turn signals and marker lights all work. The dash lights are dim, so probably need some replacements.
The heat is hooked up and you can even feel heat at the windshield and coming under the dash after it warms up. But it is still a VW bus. Lot of area to heat.
This is a great running and driving bus, and the interior is new so you can be comfortable putting the kids in and go for a drive.
But what a great bus for a total restoration!!! The trim is all there, no rust to deal with! This bus has many more miles left, and more memories to make.

Updated J.D. Power APEAL study shines on VW Group, Chevy
Wed, 24 Jul 2013J.D. Power has just revealed the results of its 2013 APEAL Study, which looks at which brands have the most appealing cars based on sales figures, dealer inventory, brand loyalty, transaction and trade-in prices. The study was revamped for 2013, and places a larger focus on the new tech and infotainment options available to customers. All told, study participants gauged their vehicles on 77 different attributes, delivering a score out of a 1,000 points.
The Volkswagen Group had the greatest success of any corporation, topping the APEAL rankings with the Audi Allroad, Porsche Boxster, Porsche Cayenne, VW GTI and Passat. Chevrolet had the highest number of awards for a single brand, though, with the Avalanche, Sonic and Volt all taking home a prize.
The best brand overall was Porsche, which scored 884 out of a possible 1,000 points. The top Japanese brand was Lexus with a score of 847, while the top American brand was Cadillac, at 841. The best mainstream brand was Ram, which received a very respectable 817. The industry average for this year's study was 795, with 16 brands, all of which were mainstream, falling below the average.
The Volkswagen Group switches official language to English
Wed, Dec 14 2016The Volkswagen Group can't be fairly thought of as entirely German anymore, so the news that the company is switching its official language to English to help attract managers and executives is a rational, if surprising, decision. While many VW Group companies are still staidly German in character and culture, consider the other companies that it controls: Bentley (British), Bugatti (French), Ducati and Lamborghini (Italian), Skoda (Czech), Scania trucks (Swedish), and SEAT (Spanish). Not to mention the large Volkswagen Group of America operation, which constructs cars in Chattanooga, TN. Volkswagen's explicit motivation is to improve management recruitment – making sure the company isn't losing out on candidates for important positions because they can't speak German – and that's inherently sensible in a globalized economy. Particularly considering, like it or lump it, that English is the lingua franca of said global economy. It also should make it inherently easier to communicate between its world-wide subsidiaries and coordinate operations. It's hard to say for sure if this will have any impact on the consumer, although it's easy to see the benefits if, say, VW Group hires some American product planners or engineers and they push for features and designs that more closely suit American needs. After all, the US is a hugely important market for any manufacturer, and so the switch to English almost certainly has something to do with the outsized influence of the US in the global economy. And there doesn't seem to be a downside from a purely rational perspective, although it could mean that the Group's corporate culture becomes less German. Whether that's a good or a bad thing depends on your perspective. New investor allows Suzuki to fend off VW
Tue, Aug 4 2015After years of legal wrangling, the long-soured partnership between Volkswagen and Suzuki looks finally to be coming out of arbitration, according to Bloomberg. As a sign of the Japanese brand's improved fortunes, hedge fund Third Point LLC recently bought an undisclosed stake in the company. The investor reported seeing a major opportunity in the successful Maruti Suzuki business in India. As an investment, the only major problem that Third Point found with Suzuki was its legal battle with VW. "The company's greatest asset is its low-cost manufacturing process for vehicles for the emerging market consumer," the fund said in a letter, according to Bloomberg. Third Point reportedly also wants a seat on Suzuki's board, despite being a minority shareholder. The alliance between Suzuki and VW goes back to late 2009. In the deal, the Japanese brand was meant to get access to cutting-edge tech, and the German firm got a helping hand towards better establishing itself in India and Southeast Asia. Things didn't go as planned, though. Less than two years later, Suzuki's boss publicly derided the deal. Eventually, the allegations started going back and forth, and the two have been working out a way to untangle practically ever since. Among the biggest issue has been how to get back the 19.9 percent stake that VW purchased. According to Bloomberg, the arbitration is now technically over. With the divorce nearly final, the two sides are just waiting on a decision on how to split things up. Suzuki may even just buy VW's stake to get the shares back.
