We purchased this wonderful VW Bus (fondly named “Ellen” from the previous owner) earlier this year with the intent of using her as a delivery vehicle for our flower shop called Poppy’s Flower Shop & Gift Boutique. It’s a wonderful bus that is a pleasure to drive, and she is definitely eye-catching with lots of smiles, thumbs-up and peace signs. Unfortunately the van does not produce enough heat during the long winter months in Laramie, Wyoming to keep proper temperature for floral deliveries and is not cost-effective for us to use only during the summer. Other than that, she has been a pleasure to own.

Please note that Ellen is not perfect and needs TLC as we learned when taking her in for manicures. Since taking ownership and not being mechanically inclined, here are the following maintenance items and upgrades we have had done through a local GM dealership and local mechanic shop specializing in vintage Volvo and VW vehicles. All work was carried out by certified mechanics familiar with historical VW automobiles:

  • Battery Cables - repaired positive battery cable and negative battery terminal. Installed anti-corrosive battery pads. Tightened alternator connection.

  • Fuel Hoses - replaced all fuel hoses with new OE (original equipment) bulk hose and check for leaks.

  • RF Brake Cylinder - replaced right front lower brake slave cylinder with new aftermarket and bled brakes

  • New Battery and Brake Pads - replaced and tested new Interstate brand battery. Installed anticorrosive brakes pads.

  • Oil Change - 21 point inspection including checking belts, hoses, all fluid levels and tire pressure.

  • Brake Master Cylinder - replaced brake master cylinder and switch with new aftermarket. Replaced right front brake hard line from master cylinder to flex line with new aftermarket custom bent. Bled brakes.

  • Front Brakes and Wheel Bearings - replaced front brake shoes. Removed and replaced brake drums to machine. Replaced front wheel bearings and seals.

  • Spark Plugs - replaced spark plugs with new NGK brand.

  • Ignition Conversion - removed and replaced distributor to repair breaker plate. Lubricated mechanical advanced, replaced vacuum diaphram, installed aftermarket electronic conversion kit. Replaced distributor cap and rotor with new Bosch and set timing.

  • Carburetor Rebuild - rebuilt carburetor and adjusted base settings.

  • E Brake Cable / Rear Shoes - replaced right emergency brake cable and brake drum hardware with new. Replaced left rear axle seal and adjusted service brake. Replaced rear brake shoes with new.

  • Rebuilt Alternator - removed and replaced alternator for custom rebuild.

  • Valve Cover Gaskets - replaced valve cover gaskets and adjusted valve lash.

  • Bulbs installed in dome (dome light not mounted yet, parts stored under dashboard).

  • Accelerator Cable - removed and replaced old accelerator cable and installed new cable. Repaired cable ends on throttle and carburetor.

  • Driver’s Side Head Lamp - technician pulled headlamp and repaired lens and terminal tension.

  • Multi-point Vehicle Inspection - checked all lights, air in spare tire, etc.

  • Lubed, checked, replaced and checked oil and filter with conventional oil. Rotated tires.

Here are notes from the previous owner who purchased the bus from an owner in California and tinkered with things like new paint, carpet, installed cd radio and speakers and other knick-knacks - we have found all information to be true and correct. “Ellen is a 1963 Transporter Bus that has been equipped with a very nice Dual Port 1600cc VW engine. She starts instantly smooth, robust power through the 4 speeds. All ignition parts have been renewed and valves adjusted to ensure great performance. She is a happy butter and cream color that seems to say ‘please love me’ to every lucky passerby. A CD player has been installed and 6 speakers provide excellent ‘flower-power’ entertainment. The floors are solid wood in the back and any surface rust was removed with the help of phosphoric acid rust treatment. Safari Windows are a great addition to the front windshield. The tires are not new, but they are in relatively good condition. I do not know the age of the 1600cc transplanted engine, nor the mileage on the engine as it was in the Bus when I bought her. I would guess that I have driven the Bus less than 1,500 miles. She runs vibrantly with no troubles and does not leave oil on the driveway. I have not had any trouble with the gearbox either. Just a wonderful ‘63 Volkswagon Transporter Bus.”

Since our taking ownership in February 2013, we have driven Ellen approximately 500 miles during the summer only for in-town deliveries. Ellen starts on the first try every time, runs smoothly through all 4 gears and is just plain great fun.

VW's Winterkorn tells 20,000 staffers of big cost-cutting plans

Thu, 24 Jul 2014

During a gathering of 20,000 Volkswagen Group employees at company headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany on Wednesday, CEO Martin Winterkorn dropped a bombshell. The boss stated that the automaker isn't operating efficiently enough and admitted the company needs to radically start cutting back to raise its profit margins. To right the ship, Winterkorn has proposed killing off less profitable models and spending less on research and development.
According to Reuters, Winterkorn wants to raise the VW brand's profit margin from about 2.9 percent in 2013 to a target of 6 percent. To make that possible, his plan amounts to increasing cost cutting until Volkswagen reaches about 5 billion euros ($6.7 billion) per year to get things back in order. "Over the short-term, we urgently need more efficiency and higher profit," the CEO said during his speech, according to Reuters.
However, Winterkorn can't make these decisions unilaterally. Volkswagen's works council also has a seat on the supervisory board to represent laborers, and it isn't likely to take the proposed cuts sitting down.

An inside look at VW's new California R&D center

Thu, 18 Oct 2012

Less than two months ago, the Volkswagen Group opened a new facility in Oxnard, California (about an hour's drive west of Los Angeles). The $27 million investment, touted as Test Center California (TCC), serves as a research and development lab testing emissions for all brands under Volkswagen's umbrella, including its newest member, Porsche. While still not fully operational, we toured the new 64,000-square-foot building last week and had a first-hand opportunity to see just how much work is involved testing engines and meeting increasingly stringent government emissions standards.
Replacing a similar facility established in 1990 in Westlake Village (about 20-minutes east of the new location), our guide explained how Oxnard was chosen for its temperate climate, varied regional terrain for test drives and low altitude. (The area is only a few feet above sea level - a critical parameter when instrument testing emissions.) The new facility is capable of analyzing hundreds of vehicles, prototypes and customer-owned vehicles, annually.
Most interesting to us was the huge stainless steel climate chamber, with a massive four-wheel dynamometer that allows VW to test running vehicles in both scorching desert and freezing climates without ever leaving the building (an Audi Q7 was running in place during our visit). We were also mesmerized by the countless storage tanks and intricate plumbing of chemicals, stored in both liquid and gas states, needed to perform the variety of tests. Lastly, we took a look at Bugatti's service center on the west coast, located completely within the new center. While there were no supercars on site, the facility is equipped with plenty of spare forged wheels (mounted with expensive Michelin PAX tires) and a Veyron-specific repair jig that allows the vehicle to be completely disassembled, if needed. It is a shame that the facility, which set off all of our automotive geek alerts, is closed to the public.

Volkswagen iBeetle gets integrated iPhone dock, little else

Fri, 19 Apr 2013

Apple fans have been itching to see the tech giant flex the full muscle of its iOS operating system in an automotive infotainment system for years, which is why we turned all sorts of excited when we caught wind of the Volkswagen iBeetle. The machine is headed to the Shanghai Motor Show for a debut, and VW promised it would be one of the "first cars in the world to have a genuine integrative interface for the iPhone that was coordinated with Apple." Listen closely, and you can hear the contented sigh of a million wallets opening.
Go ahead and close those up, kids.
In reality, the iBeetle offers little more than a dash-mounted dock and a special app that shows a few vehicle functions, which is about as far from an infotainment revolution as you're likely to find. In fact, the setup is little more than a factory rehash of aftermarket items, and hardly worth a whole model debut at an international motor show. And that's to say nothing of the fact that Apple relishes in changing the shape and form of its darling handheld at every generation. Volkswagen better be prepared to keep pace with appropriate docking mechanisms for the upcoming iPhone 5S, 6, 6S, et al.
