1986 Syncro Westfalia. Rust free Arizona van.  The original owner bought it new then shortly after ordered the Westfalia kit directly from Westfalia  and had it installed. This van runs and drives great with the 2.2 liter Subaru motor that was professional installed. Plenty of power and drives more like a car than a van with the upgraded motor. I had the complete rear interior seats and upper bunk reupholstered ($800). New carpet, 4  new 14 x 8.50 General Grabber All terrains ($700) new starter, upgraded 12 volt electric fridge, cd player, u joints, drive line and transmission. There has been some pretty innovative upgrades to the interior to make it more usable for camping such as removable propane stove, updated 12 volt fridge, and aux battery This van has the swivel seat and new muffler.  Very strait and dry van.

Subaru conversion - The Subaru motor was professional installed. Plenty of power and drives more like a car than a van with the upgraded motor. The

S
ubaru kit is from Kennendy Engineering in Palmdale California (the best for Subaru conversions). I have a 100 page manual that has all the information you need for the

Subaru upgrade. Hoses are  from Vanaru. The total cost of the motor upgrade was over $9,000

Engine/Trans - Rebuilt Subaru 2.2 liter engine with around 40k miles. At that time they installed a new clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. New starter, the transmission was just replaced with a low mile transmission. Only full senthetic motor oil has been used, fresh coolant, tune up, snorkel set up, new performance muffler, marine aux camping battery, new drive line and u joints professional installed, new motor mounts and trans mounts. New shift bushings. The Van runs and drives great with plenty of power from the Subaru motor.

Interior - The interior is in excellent shape. Front seats are in good condition with no rips or stains. passenger side swivel seat, no cracks in dash, nice Alpine cd player with remote and 4 alpine speakers. two 6 inch speakers up front, two 6x9 speakers in back. New carpet in cargo area, updated electric 12 volt fridge.  Fresh water tank with electric pump and new faucet. Aux camping marine battery, new upper bunk cushions, new upholstery on upper bunk, Z bed and rear cushion (cost over $800). I lined all interior cabinets with marine carpet. 6 110 volt electrical out lets. Removable propane stove, built in butcher block on counter. Interior has been cleaned and detailed. The interior is in great over all condition.

Pop Top - This van has the 3 window canvas upgrade. The canvas has no rips, all zippers work well. Upper bunk sleeps two and has new upholstery and padding.

Paint and Body - The body has a few minor dings and some scratches and scuff marks. This van has never been wrecked and is super strait. All door and body gaps are perfect. No cancer on this bus, no seam rust.  Paint is very presentable but shows its age.

Other - Nice alloy rims with 4 new 14 x 8.50 General Grabber All terrain tires ($700). Rear heater under Z bed, custom heavy duty steel rear bumper, nice front bumper 230,000 miles on body, ( low miles on drive train).

F.A.Q 's -
The van does have a water storage tank.
The faucet does work and runs of 12 volt.
The van can be hooked up to shore power (110) at a camp site.
There is a marine aux camping battery which is hooked up.
The fridge is new and better than the original. Fridge is ice cold.
The stove is propane and works great.
The upper bunk is fully functional and sleeps two people.
The van does have ac but it is not hooked up.
The Subaru conversion was done professionaly and with the best parts.
Engine has 40k and runs perfect.
Trans only has 60k miles on it and shifts perfect.
Runs and drives great, much better power and mpg than the stock 2.1 liter wasser boxer engine.
The Westfalia kit was ordered directly from Westfalia in Germany when the van was purchased new.

I have put a lot of time and money in this van to make it a clean reliable driver that can go any were. Solid Arizona Van.  This van is ready for cross country adventures, all the hard work has been done.
Contact me with any questions.

Consumer Reports no longer recommends Honda Civic

Mon, Oct 24 2016

Consumer Reports annual Car Reliability Survey is out, and yes, there are some big surprises. First and foremost? The venerable publication no longer recommends the Honda Civic. In fact, aside from the walking-dead CR-Z and limited-release Clarity fuel-cell car, the Civic is the only Honda to miss out on CR's prestigious nod. At the opposite end there's a surprise as well – Toyota and Lexus remain the most reliable brands on the market, but Buick cracked the top three. That's up from seventh last year, and the first time for an American brand to stand on the Consumer Reports podium. Mazda's entire lineup earned Recommended checks as well. Consumer Reports dinged the Civic for its "infuriating" touch-screen radio, lack of driver lumbar adjustability, the limited selection of cars on dealer lots fitted with Honda's popular Sensing system, and the company's decision to offer LaneWatch instead of a full-tilt blind-spot monitoring system. Its score? A lowly 58. The Civic isn't the only surprise drop from CR's Recommended ranks. The Audi A3, Ford F-150, Subaru WRX/STI, and Volkswagen Jetta, GTI, and Passat all lost the Consumer Reports' checkmark. On the flipside, a number of popular vehicles graduated to the Recommended ranks, including the BMW X5, Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette, and Cruze, Hyundai Santa Fe, Porsche Macan, and Tesla Model S. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the hilariously recall-prone Ford Escape getting a Recommended check – considering the popularity of Ford's small crossover, this is likely a coup for the brand, as it puts the Escape on a level playing field with the Recommended Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Nissan Rogue. While Ford is probably happy to see CR promote the Escape, the list wasn't as kind for every brand. For example, of the entire Fiat Chrysler Automobiles catalog, the ancient Chrysler 300 was the only car to score a check – there wasn't a single Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati, or Ram on the list. That hurts. FCA isn't alone at the low end, either. GMC, Jaguar Land Rover, Mini, and Mitsubishi don't have a vehicle on CR's list between them, while brands like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Nissan, Lincoln, Infiniti, and Cadillac only have a few models each. Porsche 911 with VW turbodiesel prepares for LeMons assault

Fri, 21 Mar 2014

LeMons racing is a wonderful example that setting limits can actually breed creativity. The series mandates that all entries must cost $500, not counting safety equipment, and that cap forces teams to be ingenious in how they build a racecar. Take for example this diesel-powered Porsche 911, which its creators have dubbed Ferkel the Nein-11, that will be racing in the Sears Pointless race this weekend in Sonoma, California.
This Frankenstein combines a 911 chassis that was originally bought just for its European powertrain and a Volkswagen TDI diesel engine mounted in the rear. After deciding the shell could still be of some use, the team decided to go racing. "We began brainstorming what replacement drivetrain to use for maximum offense and there was really only one answer: a diesel," said Philipp von Weitershausen, one of the team captains, to Jalopnik. They bought a 1998 Jetta TDI on the cheap and started figuring out a way to hack the engine into the bay. To pay respect to the donor, the VW's trunk was highly modified (and drilled) and grafted onto the back of Ferkel.
This team isn't a newcomer to LeMons. Its last car was a classic VW Beetle with a Subaru engine and dual controls, named Ferdinand the Bug, which could be driven from the left or right side. It's quite a sight.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg [w/video]

Fri, Dec 5 2014

The second-generation Volkswagen Touareg has been in production since 2010, and is therefore staring down the last part of its model cycle. To keep buyers interested, the company has undertaken a refresh of its upscale midsize SUV. As is typical of these things, the changes include some exterior and interior rejuvenation, as well as increased content levels and a slight uptick in price. The basics of the styling changes are pretty straightforward. The 2015 Touareg can be pretty easily spotted versus the outgoing model by way of its four-bar chrome grille, a cleaner headlight design, bigger VW badge and a completely new lower front clip. (I got one photo of the old and new models side-by-side for my Twitter followers before we rolled out on the drive.) There's also a thin strip of chrome that runs around the bodywork, standard LED taillights and a selection of three new wheel styles and five new paint colors. Inside, I found it harder to spot the changes, old to new. The Touareg's switchgear has been updated and there's a new frame for the infotainment display, but there's no piece that stands out and says "new model year!" Powertrains and mechanical bits all carryover from the 2014 Touareg, too. But there were a few functional changes to the vehicle, primarily in the new Driver's Assistance Package, for me to take note of as I took a lap of my favorite Ann Arbor, MI driving route. Drive Notes Let me start with the newest news then, the Driver Assistance pack. Volkswagen will sell you this suite of safety gear on either the mid-level Lux or the top-end Executive trims, for $2,500. The package included adaptive cruse cruise control, "Front Assist" for emergency braking situations, lane-keep assist and blind spot monitoring. If the contents of that package don't strike you as revolutionary, you're not alone. Some or all of the technologies that are new to the Touareg have been around other showrooms – and other VW family products – for quite a while. Still, they're nice to have as options. All of the driver assistance features that I was able to test worked as advertised, too. The adaptive cruise uses cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors, so it isn't likely to be impacted by inclement weather, which is nice. I also appreciate that the lane-keep assist (which offers the driver a haptic buzz to the steering wheel when straying out of the lane) can be turned off, or turned down in terms of intensity and reaction time.
