Up for bid is a super efficient 2002 New Beetle TDI with the legendary 1.9L ALH series diesel. This example has only 79k miles and runs like a top. Expertly maintained by an ASE certified VW Master Tech who is a personal friend of mine. This car was purchased for my daughter to drive to high school. No expense has been spared in its upkeep.
We purchased it from the estate of a family friend in Tampa FL with 27k on the odometer a little over 3 years ago. I have listed the services done to the car both prior to us acquiring it and since we have owned it. Mechanically it is a 10/10. There are no lights on the dash, engine runs as new, transmission shifts smoothly and all power options are working properly. Inspection is welcomed by your certified mechanic at your own expense by appointment. The interior is smoke free and clean. There are no rips, stains or strange odors. There are however a few common VW cosmetic issues on the interior. They are listed below for your consideration. I would rate the interior a 7.5/10. The body is rust free and the undercarriage is very clean. The car has only seen 3 NE winters and was washed regularly. There are some dings and small dents around the car. These are the results of parking lots and the like. The elderly gentlemen we purchased the car from impacted a workbench in his garage shortly before he stopped driving. This created a small hole in the front bumper cover and some scratches in the paint in that area. Pictures are included. I would rate the body 8/10. The paint really shines nicely and there is absolutely no rust. We are selling the car as my daughter is attending school in NYC and a car there is not allowed. With a little cosmetic TLC the car would be mint. Car comes with winter wheels with studded snow tires and many spare filters. SERVICES: ***Oil changes every 5k with Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 full Synthetic oil and factory or Napa Gold oil filter*** *** Fuel filter changed every 10k with factory or Napa Gold filter- filter filled with lubro moly injection cleaner at each change*** *** Air filter and cabin air filter changed every 30k*** *** Battery replaced 2/2011*** Major services: 42k miles : Timing belt, rollers, tensioners, water pump and serpentine belt changed due to age not mileage. Car starts flawlessly in the cold weather. INTERIOR: Cosmetic issues: 1. Headliner is sagging. Common problem. We were going to redo with a fancy fabric but never got to it. 2 cans of adhesive come with car. 2. Glove box door is removed. Latching mechanism failed. Used units available on eBay. 3. Both interior door handles have been replaced with billet aluminum custom units. There are some cracks in the door panel where the originals failed due to being plastic and the Beetle having large heavy doors. 4. There is a small dime sized discoloration on driver seat bottom. I have tried to describe everything to the best of my ability. Please remember the car is 12 years old. It has been well cared for and will last for many years if properly maintained. I've seen them for sale with well over 300k. The car gets between 40-50 mpgs depending on how you drive. Very safe and dependable car. Tons of room inside. Volkswagen completes design work on new EV platform
Tue, Jan 10 2017Volkswagen has completed the design work for its modular, MEB platform that's geared specifically for electric-vehicle production, Automotive News Europe says, citing comments Volkswagen development head Frank Welsch made at CES in Las Vegas last week. Additionally, VW's Skoda and Seat divisions may use that platform for their own plug-in vehicle models. VW's Audi division is also considering employing the platform, though adoption by Volkswagen's Porsche unit is unlikely. VW expects to start selling its first model specifically designed as an EV (i.e., not converted from existing conventional models such as the Golf and Up!) by 2020. Welsch added that the MEB platform may be used as a base for updated electrified versions of Golf, Tiguan, and Passat. Meanwhile, Skoda will debut as many as five plug-in models by 2025. Europe's largest automaker is looking to further distance itself from the 2015 scandal that involved software that cheats diesel-emissions testing efforts and has cost the company more than $15 billion in US settlements alone. All told, VW and its divisions expect to debut as many as 30 plug-in vehicle models within the next decade. Volkswagen unveiled its I.D. concept vehicle, which is based on the MEB platform and looks somewhat like the BMW i3 electric-vehicle model, at last year's Paris Motor Show. VW said at the time that the vehicle could go as far as 373 miles on a single charge. Additionally, VW will show off an electric SUV concept model at this year's Shanghai Auto Show, and is unveiling a microbus version of the I.D. concept at the Detroit Auto Show this month. The VW Sport Coupe GTE Concept promises exciting things for brand's future [w/video]
Tue, Mar 3 2015In recent years, it seems as though the Audi allotment of design talent from the Volkswagen Group has gotten braver, while the VW designers have become more conservative. One look at the current Volkswagen range reveals a lot of tidy sheet metal, but hardly any that rank as evocative or emotionally compelling. If the rhetoric around this Sport Coupe GTE Concept turns to action, however, VW's mass-marketed cars could become a lot more interesting to look at. Sharp creases and bold graphics can be found on just about every inch of the concept, and the large wheels at either extreme corner help to sell this as a "four-door coupe" more than most executions of that now hackneyed styling term. And, if you like what you see, then you might want to hold out for quickly approaching versions of this look on production models. Design head Walter de Silva says this language will be "shaping the immediate future" for VW product. Mechanically, the Coupe also previews more hybridization for the VW line. The concept has a plug-in hybrid powertrain, with a turbo 3.0-liter V6 driving the front wheels, and an electric motor sending yet more power to the rear. You can read up on the details in our official post from a few days ago, or just click through the pretty pictures in the gallery above. SPORT COUPE CONCEPT GTE MAKES WORLD DEBUT AT THE GENEVA AUTO SHOW Four-door coupe marks beginning of a new design era at Volkswagen Wolfsburg/Geneva, March 2015 -Volkswagen will debut the Sport Coupe Concept GTE at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show, heralding a new and progressive Volkswagen design language. "Evolution and revolution come together in the Sport Coupe Concept GTE. This concept is based on Volkswagen design DNA, which has been visibly sharpened even more. It shows how the highest-volume brand of our Group is shaping the immediate future," says Walter de Silva, Head of Design of Volkswagen AG. Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser, Volkswagen Brand Board Member for Development, elaborates: "This breathtakingly dynamic coupe is unlike any other to appear in this class. The design of the Sport Coupe Concept GTE is an impressive alternative to the classic sedans of the B and C segments-it has the style of a sport coupe that is enriched by the functionality of a large hatchback and the interior space of a sedan." Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design of the Volkswagen Brand, adds: "The Sport Coupe Concept GTE is another milestone of expressive design.
Former Audi chief designer Wolfgang Egger leaves Italdesign
Sat, Dec 27 2014The latest word from the international community of automotive designers has it that Wolfgang Egger is leaving Italdesign, but just where the accomplished designer will land next and who will take his place remain big question marks. Egger is a designer who has bounced back and forth between Italy and Germany over the course of his career. He was born in Germany but studied in Milan. He began his career at Alfa Romeo in 1989 and was named its chief designer by 1993 before being head-hunted by the Volkswagen Group in 1998 to head up the design department at Seat. A few years later he went returned to Italy to run the Lancia design department, and was subsequently renamed to the same post at Alfa Romeo. In 2007 he went back to his native Germany to head up the Audi design office, over which he assumed complete responsibility by 2012, but left Audi in 2013 to run Italdesign. For those unfamiliar, Italdesign is the studio founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro (pictured at left next to Egger) back in 1968 but which, along with many other Italian design houses, fell on hard times in recent years. The Volkswagen Group swooped in to rescue the troubled studio in 2010, turning it into something of an in-house advanced design department to provide an alternative perspective on the direction in which the group and its various brands could take their respective designs moving forward. With Egger now leaving its helm, Italdesign and its German parent company will need to find his replacement, and we're sure they'll announce one in due course. The bigger question on our minds, however, is where Egger himself will head next. Given the path his career has taken to date, we wouldn't be surprised to see him land elsewhere in the Volkswagen Group or find a new role in the expanding Fiat Chrysler Automobiles empire. Then again, Egger could find it time to open an entirely new chapter. Watch this space.
