There are a few chips from use and a few paint flaws. Paint is about an 8/10. Interior is immaculate. Engine has powdercoated tins and shroud."

This is a beautifully restored classic VW convertible beetle that I built for my wife.  We purchased this car with the intent of fully restoring it for her to keep for many years, but the current need forces the sale.  We removed the body from pan and repaired all rusted areas, had the car media blasted and all bodywork and paint done.  The chassis was restored using new components, brakes, lines, drums, beam, transmission, wheels/tires, etc.  Most parts were purchased from Wolfsburg West a local producer of high quality restoration parts for VW's.

The engine is an 1835cc dual port motor with Dual Weber carbs.  It has been inspected, re-sealed, carbs rebuilt and minor components replaced.  The transmission was rebuilt by KCR in Riverside, CA  and is a freeway flyer model.  A1 stainless steel sidewinder exhaust with powdercoated heat exchangers.

The interior seat frame were powdercoated and all interior work performed by Tailors Upholstery in Montclair, CA  All wood bows, rubber, and top mechanicals were replaced/refurbished and a Stayfast Canvas top with mohair headliner installed.  All chrome window frames, latches, and components were re-chromed.  The car has all of its original handles, convertible mirror, and knobs.

A custom, hidden audio system has been placed strategically for safety and not to interfere with the original dash design.  The car also features a security system.

Only 350 miles have been driven since completion of the restoration!  Please bid with confidence.  I have 100% seller satisfaction rating and will be happy to answer any questions that you have, just ask.

Mike

Additional info**  I have had many questions about pricing, so to help interested parties make the most informed decision here is where I am at.  I have invested upwards of $30,000 not including my own assembly/labor on the car.  This is no $10,000 car.  I have just about $8,000 in the interior and stereo alone.  If you have never restored a convertible, you can't believe how expensive they can be and quite honestly, this is my first and probably my last just because I did not realize how costly they can be to restore.  There is $4,000 in the top frame restoration, wood blows, rubber kit, and installation.  I have set the reserve price considerably below what I have into the bug, as I am motivated to sell it quickly, but I had to place a reserve on it for my own protection and to satisfy what I feel is my minimum return.  Thanks for all the interest!

VW confirms Golf GTD diesel coming to US for 2016

Wed, 03 Jul 2013

Part of the Volkswagen Golf recipe that has helped the car sell more than 30 million units in just under 40 years is the number of variants in which the hatchback is offered. Building on that range here in the US, Automotive News is reporting that we will finally be getting the sporty Golf GTD, likely as a 2016 model. It's the GTD, you'll recall, that crosses the performance abilities of the venerable GTI with a powerful and fuel-efficient diesel engine.
After speaking with Andreas Valbuena, Volkswagen product manager for the Golf, AN not only says that the GTD will for sale in the US in a couple years, it also estimates a baseline price of around $27,000, which would place it between the current pricing for the GTI and the Golf R. The GTD is launching in Europe this summer, but we won't be getting the seventh-generation Golf in the US for another year. The news about the performance diesel model isn't entirely unexpected - VW officials have been hinting at it for at least a year now, going so far as to import a sixth-generation model for media test drives on US soil, a task we happily took them up on last year.
The Mk VII GTD uses VW's 2.0-liter TDI engine with output increased to 184 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, allowing the car to sprint to 60 miles per hour in about seven seconds while returning more than 40 mpg in highway driving. We can't wait.

Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe is a green fun-machine we want to drive

Fri, 19 Apr 2013

Think back to January's Detroit Auto Show. Those of you that are fans of the Volkswagen brand, impressed with green technology or simply fall into the "diesel geek" category, will almost certainly remember VW's CrossBlue concept with its diesel/electric hybrid powertrain, seating for seven, and somewhat awkward crossover styling. It was an impressive piece of future tech, to be sure, though it left something to be desired in the, well, desirability department.
Here in Shanghai, VW has brought along a CrossBlue Coupe concept that would seem to include most of the goodness of the original, but flavored with more sport and style this time around.
The CrossBlue Coupe makes use of the same electric drive components as the larger three-row concept: two electric motors (front and rear) powered by a 9.8-kWh lithium-ion battery. However, where the original concept made use of a TDI four-cylinder, the Coupe substitutes a 295-horsepower, direct-injection, gasoline-burning V6.

MindDrive cruises California with 1972 Karmann Ghia EV

Thu, Jun 26 2014

If you need a bit of inspirational EV goodness, spend some time watching the collection of videos we've got for you from Minddrive. Minddrive, as you might remember, is the education mentorship program that "uses real-world issues of our times to teach urban students critical thinking, creativity, entrepreneurship and how to improve their future by expanding their vision for themselves." The focus was on a fully restored 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. Well, restored and converted to electric power. The students previously worked on the Lola EV but this year the focus was on a fully restored 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. Well, restored and then converted to electric power. In early June, almost 50 Minddrive students and mentors flew from Kansas City to California to visit the epicenter of electric vehicles in the US on something called the "Raise Your Hand Tour." Filmmakers Mark Honer and Kelly Creech from DHTV Digital were along for the ride. The videos below show the students flying from to Oakland, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, presenting the Karmann Ghia at the California Academy of Sciences and then visiting the Monterey Bay EV Club, Google, Twitter and Telsa. All of this EV engagement apparently worked. One of the students, identified only as Xavier, wrote a poem and essay about what the electric vehicle project meant to him. Here's a tease: "Minddrive has honestly opened my eyes to sights and things I would have never thought possible. I have finally found the right path to follow." Read the whole thing below, after the videos. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. This content is hosted by a third party.
