This is a gorgeous little car in great mechanical condition and it's a knock-out visually. Most of all, it's fun to drive.
It was totally restored two years ago and has absolutely no rust anywhere. It's been garaged ever since and has been kept smoke-free and driven very little, which is why we're letting it go. When we started the restoration (total disassembly) we obtained a "birth certificate" from the Volkswagen Automuseum in Wolfsburg giving the data on the day of manufacture, all the mechanical specs, the original paint color and the color of the top. It's as close to original as possible. It has a rebuilt engine with only about 2,000 miles on it, so it runs like a new car. Beside the new paint, new top and new boot, the entire interior is new: new door panels, new carpeting, new windshield, new alternator plus custom chrome wheels but the original wheels are available. It has brand new custom bucket seats available (I put the original seats back in), too. The original radio works fine and it has a good battery; the tires have 70% of the tread left. The engine is the original 1600 cc, with fuel injection. It starts and runs perfectly. Mechanically, it's excellent and needs no work - it's ready to go!
All the records and an owner's manual are included as well as a half dozen VW books, extra back seat cover, door panels and tail lights. It has a small crack in the vinyl of the dashboard and a little dimple in the driver's door just in front of the handle (hard to see). See the photos. We added wind diverters (easily removed) to the seat head rests. We live in a remote location but will cooperate with shipping.
All-in-all, the driving experience is more fun than many new cars can offer.

CEO says Volkswagen's buying spree is over
Mon, 03 Sep 2012
After adding Italian motorcycle icon Ducati to its stable and spending $5.6 billion on the rest of Porsche, Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn says he's done shopping for a while.
"We have enough to do at the moment in taking our twelve brands to where we want to be," Winterkorn tells German newspaper Handelsblatt.
VW invests in QuantumScape for potentially fireproof, long-range EV batteries
Mon, Dec 8 2014VW might be getting ready to push its plug-in technology in a big way thanks to an investment in the battery startup QuantumScape. Key point: the solid-state battery is said to be fireproof and will offer tremendous range advantages. Details are not abundant yet, but according to Bloomberg, VW of America bought a five-percent stake in QuantumScape (and has an option to raise its holding). The tech could "more than triple" the EV range of VW, Porsche and Audi plug-in vehicles as soon as the middle of 2015, according to unnamed sources that Bloomberg talked to. Former Stanford University researchers started QuantumScape in 2010. The bare-bones QuantumScape website (there's nothing there other than some contact information) doesn't offer many hints about what's happening at the company, but GigaOM's Katie Fehrenbacher notes that QuantumScape is licensing tech from the "All Electron Battery" project at Stanford a few years ago. It certainly sounds amazing: [It's] a completely new class of electrical energy storage devices for electric vehicles that has the potential to provide ultra-high energy and power densities, while enabling extremely high cycle life. The All-Electron Battery stores energy by moving electrons, rather than ions, and uses electron/hole redox instead of capacitive polarization of a double-layer. ... If successful, this project will develop a completely new paradigm in energy storage for electrified vehicles that could revolutionize the electric vehicle industry. If that's what's coming in a future e-Golf or E-Tron, sign us up.
Audi prepping a flex-fuel A3 for Latin America
Fri, Oct 16 2015Volkswagen's Audi division hasn't fared well from its parent company's diesel-emissions scandal, especially in the US and Europe. In South America, though, Audi is set to unveil its first vehicle of the flex-fuel variety, according to Nseavoice. Perhaps the German automaker can earn some good karma down in the Southern Hemisphere. The model is the 2016 Audi A3, which is made in Audi's Brazil factory. The engine is a 1.4-liter variety, and it will be able to run on either conventional gasoline or ethanol, or a blend of both. The decision makes sense because ethanol is plentiful in Brazil since the government has long pushed for it and there's plenty of sugar-cane feedstock to produce the stuff. Audi can use all of the positive news it can get, especially in the wake of VW's diesel-emissions scandal. As many as 11 million VW and Audi diesels may have been fitted with software that cheats emissions-testing systems. One result from the scandal's proverbial shrapnel is that the Audi A3 TDI diesel was stripped of its 2010 Green Car of the Year Award by Green Car Journal. The decision marks the first time in the award's history that a winner was stripped of the honor. VW has a long history offering flex-fuel vehicles in Brazil. In 2003, the German automaker was the first to debut a flex-fuel engine, and within two years, VW's Brazil factories were making 300,000 flex-fuel vehicles annually. Other companies have since jumped into Brazil's flex-fuel fray, including Nissan and Honda.
