1979 VW Super Beetle Convertible Very Low Mileage Survivor - This is the last time this vehicle will be offered for sale.

Please note, I am selling this for a friend who is not on Ebay.  His father purchased the car in 1984 from the original owner.

Very original, low mileage survivor (42,850 original miles) manufactured in December 1979, making it the last full month of production in the famous Karmann Plant in Germany.  No rust, no issues.

They have all the service records and can document the mileage.  This car is very original, down to the original 1977 date stamped tires and Mars Red paint.  Everything works as it’s supposed to even the original clock, minus a quirky fuel gauge.  There is no rust anywhere, never seen a salty winter and it has been garaged kept for life.  It’s in remarkable original condition. It’s not perfect, it is an original un-restored car but the local VW guys said it the nicest tightest Beetle they have driven in years. This is the last of the convertibles with all the standard conveniences of the update Super Beetle model such as the 4 speed manual transmission, fuel injection, as well as all the subtle driver conveniences of the later models.

Mechanically, the car needs no immediate attention.  The car was just fully inspected at Motormania (a VW specialist here in Austin). They found a very slight leak on the transmission.  He recommended that they leave it alone as it was minor and said "if these cars aren't leaking, they need fluids".   They replaced the fuel pump (they said it was weak) and the car is running perfectly. They said this was the best, tightest, beetle they have seen in decades. The fuel gauge is working but is quirky.   It has the original tires from the 70's which I guess is a good and bad thing.  The car drives well and brakes straight, it runs perfectly.  There is a slight shimmy around 50ish but it goes away.  I figure 99% of that is the fact it has the original tires – yes, date stamped from the 70’s!

There is a flaw in a piece of plastic trim, the top is overall all good shape considering it’s age minus a little unraveling on an edge (please see photo). The driver’s seat has a small hole on the driver’s side (please see photo).  There are a few paint chips.  There are seat covers.  The hubcaps, the driving/fog lamps, and stereo are not original.

I try to describe things accurately so this is the reason for the full disclosure, I don’t like surprises or disappointments. Since this is not my car, both wanted to try and disclose the good and the bad.   The owner stated that if you buy the car and you don't like when you get here, you don't have to buy it.

If you are looking at this ad, you likely know more about the car then I do and know their history, dependability, and value.  The only reason he is selling this car is because he is getting married and losing garage space.  The car has been in a garage for life and he can’t think of it being out in the elements.  If it does not sell in this ad, it will be shipped to his folks place.

Full payment due with 7 days after auction and a $500 deposit due immediately.    No warranties are made express or implied.  Vehicle is located in central Austin, Texas and available to be seen.  Vehicle is for sale locally so auction may end at any time.

Horn, Hackenburg, Hatz to be fired as VW diesel scandal deepens

Thu, Sep 24 2015

Volkswagen will sack three more high ranking executives, including the head of its US division, as the company's diesel scandal deepens. Reuters reported Thursday morning that the executives are: Michael Horn, who has led VW's US operations since January 1, 2014; Ulrich Hackenberg, who oversaw Audi's research and development; and Wolfgang Hatz, who was in charge of R&D for Porsche. A VW spokesman wouldn't comment in response to an Autoblog email. The moves come in the wake of longtime VW chief executive Martin Winterkorn stepping down on Wednesday. Volkswagen's board said at the time that it expected more personnel changes to follow. Volkswagen's board is scheduled to meet Friday, and Porsche CEO Matthias Muller has reportedly been named as Winterkorn's successor. The German auto giant was plunged into crisis last Friday when the EPA charged that the company manipulated software in its diesel-powered cars to pass US emissions tests. About 482,000 vehicles in the US are affected, and VW estimates 11 million around the world could have the rigged software. The revelations have prompted outcry from governments and regulatory agencies, and in the US, Volkswagen could face a fine of up to $18 billion. The departure of Horn, Hackenberg, and Hatz is a stunning downfall for three of the company's top and most visible executives. Horn had led US operations for less than two years, taking over from Jonathan Browning, who was well-respected but failed to reach VW's ambitious sales targets. Before overseeing Audi R&D, Hackenberg was hailed as a visionary for work in developing VW's modular architectures, which allow the company to save time and money by building many vehicles off the same chassis. Hatz had led Porsche R&D since 2011 and also was in charge of engines and transmission development for all of Volkswagen. Pontiac Aztek enjoys rebirth thanks to Millennials

Fri, Sep 11 2015

Apparently, Millennials – those between 18 and 34 – aren't afraid to look different on the road, and they like performance, too. A new study by Edmunds is discovering some surprising vehicle choices by this group. Among them, the long-derided Pontiac Aztek is getting a new day in the sun with 25.5 percent its buyers coming from this generation in the first half of 2015. For comparison, Millennials represent an average of 16.8 percent of used car purchases. The Aztek is slowly shaking its reputation as a styling abomination, which seems tied to its appearance on Breaking Bad. The show premiered in 2008, and the Pontiac has been on this list for four of the past five years, according to Edmunds. It even led the pack in 2010. A recent Retro Review from MotorWeek also showed that the crossover wasn't always so hated. While it's still a shock to see the Aztek on any popularity list, the awkward-looking crossover only ranks sixth among Millennials. The vehicle with the biggest portion of buyers from the generation is the Dodge Magnum with 27.6 percent. According to Edmunds, the bluntly styled wagon is especially popular in Detroit and Chicago. The Chrysler Pacifica comes in a close second at 27.3 percent. When it comes to used cars, value and utility appear to trump just about anything else for many Millennial buyers," Edmunds analyst Jeremy Acevedo said in the report. Young buyers aren't afraid of sporty rides, either. The Subaru WRX has 26.4 percent Millennial buyers to rank third place on the list, and the Volkswagen R32 takes fifth at 25.7 percent. Just a few points lower in seventh place is the Nissan GT-R at 25.4 percent, and the final performance machine in 10th place is the Lexus IS-F with 24.7 percent. Related Video:

Autoblog's Editors' Picks: Our complete list of the best new vehicles

Mon, May 13 2024

It's not easy to earn an “EditorsÂ’ Picks” at Autoblog as part of the rating and review process that every new vehicle goes through. Our editors have been at it a long time, which means weÂ’ve driven and reviewed virtually every new car you can go buy on the dealer lot. There are disagreements, of course, and all vehicles have their strengths and weaknesses, but this list features what we think are the best new vehicles chosen by Autoblog editors. We started this formal review process back in 2018, so there's quite of few of them now. So what does it mean to be an EditorsÂ’ Pick? In short, it means itÂ’s a car that we can highly recommend purchasing. There may be one, multiple, or even zero vehicles in any given segment that we give the green light to. What really matters is that itÂ’s a vehicle that weÂ’d tell a friend or family member to go buy if theyÂ’re considering it, because itÂ’s a very good car. The best way to use this list is is with the navigation links below. Click on a segment, and you'll quickly arrive at the top rated pickup truck or SUV, for example. Use the back button to return to these links and search in another segment, like sedans. If youÂ’ve been keeping up with our monthly series of the latest vehicles to earn EditorsÂ’ Pick status, youÂ’re likely going to be familiar with this list already. If not, welcome to the complete list that weÂ’ll be keeping updated as vehicles enter (and others perhaps exit) the good graces of our editorial team. We rate a new car — giving it a numerical score out of 10 — every time thereÂ’s a significant refresh or if it happens to be an all-new model. Any given vehicle may be impressive on a first drive, but we wait until itÂ’s in the hands of our editors to put it through the same type of testing as every other vehicle that rolls through our test fleet before giving it the EditorsÂ’ Pick badge. This ensures consistency and allows more voices to be heard on each individual model. And just so you donÂ’t think weÂ’ve skipped trims or variants of a model, we hand out the EditorsÂ’ Pick based on the overarching model to keep things consistent. So, when you read that the 3 Series is an EditorsÂ’ Pick, yes, that includes the 330i to the M3 and all the variants in between. If thereÂ’s a particular version of that car we vehemently disagree with, we make sure to call that out.
