1977 Vw Beetle Rat Rod on 2040-cars
Oak Park, Illinois, United States
If i had a good place to store and work on this, I wouldn't be selling it... but I don't so I am. This is a completely ridiculous VW rat rod. It currently runs and drives fine, but the brake lights stopped working so I haven't driven it far in a couple of weeks. About two months ago I grove around 500 miles in a weekend. I'm not going to claim it was comfortable, but the car had zero problems.
If you're looking for a reasonable daily driver, you should absolutely not buy this car. It has one seat, no interior, no heat, questionable wiring and really requires ear plugs for long drives. If you're considering buying a bright yellow Lamborghini to drive slowly and get attention, I promise this will attract more (and more positive) looks. You will get used to having your picture taken. It literally caused an accident while parked as someone drifted across the road while looking at it. I had an approving, positive conversation about it with a 1%'er at a gas station. I bought the car mostly as is from a local guy who worked on it with his two sons. It has so many unique touches I don't even know where to start. Sanded down to bare metal, rusted, then sealed with epoxy. Road sign fenders (and the beginning of an interior). License plate inner fenders. License plate dash. Raised coil-over suspension and brand new all-terrain tires. Headlights are apparently from some 1920's truck. Chopped & snubbed nose front end. Trimmed engine cover. Welded roof rack with snowboard bolted on. Stinger header. Beyond the rat rod nature, major issues are: Floor is solid, but has some riveted in patches and could stand to be replaced. I have a quote of $1400 including labor from a very reputable VW restoration shop. Heat channels are solid & in good shape. Boots on the axles are in rough shape and work but should be replaced eventually. I have a quote of $490 to replace both axles including labor from the same shop. The brake lights just stopped working. It's been very cold, and it's possible one of the switches froze up. The fuel gauge just stopped working but is likely just a bad connection. Working on getting that fixed before it leaves. Other than that, it runs strong, shifts fine, stops fine, and drives straight. Additional Parts not yet installed: 1920's horn & chain pull switch. Lots of additional road signs. Miscellaneous mirrors and other bits that could be welded on. If it doesn't sell in the next couple of days, I'm taking it in to get the floor, axles, and electrical issues addressed. I just thought I'd see if someone was interested that might want to do the work themselves. |

2015 will be the biggest year ever for cars at CES
Fri, Jan 2 2015Like the SEMA Show, major automakers are paying increasing attention to the CES, with 2015 expected to be one of the most auto focused yet. Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota, General Motors, Hyundai, Mazda, Audi, BMW and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will all be in attendance when CES 2015 kicks off next week, taking up a record-breaking 165,000 square feet of space at the Las Vegas Convention Center. "We've come a long way from a single car on a carpet," Ford's Alan Hall told Bloomberg. Unlike SEMA, or a more traditional auto show, like the upcoming festivities in Detroit, CES doesn't necessarily focus on entire cars or the way they perform, but on the way our technology will interact with vehicles, and in how those vehicles will deliver information to drivers. "CES has become a major launch point for a lot of the big automakers," IHS tech analyst Mark Boyadjis told Bloomberg. "CES is a way for them to get on a global stage for technology." As for what kind of wares automakers will trot out in Las Vegas, we already know that BMW will show off an autonomous i3 electric car that can navigate its way through a multistory car park and can be hailed via a smartwatch app. According to Bloomberg, Hyundai will show off its own smartwatch app for the Genesis sedan, while Audi and Mercedes-Benz will show off autonomous vehicles next week. Automakers won't be the only companies looking to capitalize on CES. Tech firms, like chipmaker Nvidia, are becoming increasingly involved in the automotive game and will be in town showing their wares off to OEMs. "Two years ago, our booth would have been filled with PCs and people playing video games," Danny Shapiro, Nvidia's senior director for automotive business, told Bloomberg. "This year we made a strategic decision to shift the focus of the booth on automotive and de-prioritize some of the other things." Needless to say, you can expect to see a lot of news out of Las Vegas come next week. Stay tuned. Volkswagen Group names Paefgen head of classics program
Tue, 04 Oct 2011You may remember the name Franz-Josef Paefgen. Until recently, the German engineer and executive was head of both Bentley and Bugatti. Before that he was chief executive of Audi, after working for several years at Ford. He technically "retired" earlier this year, but like the cars he helped create, an executive like Paefgen could never really retire. So it should come as little surprise that the Volkswagen Group has named Dr. Paefgen head of its Classic program.
In his new capacity, Paefgen will oversee the historic automobile activities of the entire VW Group, including those of Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda, Audi, Lamborghini, and of course Bentley and Bugatti. It strikes us as a suitable semi-retirement for the man responsible in no small part for the Bugatti Veyron and Bentley Mulsanne, to name just two, and who was decorated in 2006 by the ACO as the "Spirit of Le Mans" for his contribution to endurance racing. Read the official announcement after the break.
2014 Volkswagen GTI to start a new hot hatch era in Geneva
Tue, 26 Feb 2013The upcoming Geneva Motor Show is going to be stocked with important new production models and sexy concept cars, but hot hatch enthusiasts will undoubtedly see it as the coming out party of the MkVII Volkswagen GTI. And while we've only got European specifications and pricing to go on for now, we can tell from the get-go that the new GTI will be a proper heir to VW's hot hatch legacy.
This seventh-generation GTI is powered by a turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which makes 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque in base form. For the first time ever, Volkswagen is also offering a performance pack for the GTI as well, which ups the horsepower to 230 (torque remains unchanged). With a slightly lower curb weight to push around - the new base car weighs 2,978 pounds versus 3,034 for the current three-door GTI - 0-62 miles per hour is now achieved in 6.5 seconds, and top speed is 153 mph. (Cars with the performance pack offer 0-62 mph in 6.4 seconds, and a 155-mph top speed.) Buyers my choose between a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed DSG unit.
Visually, the new GTI has obviously adopted the slant-nosed looks of the MkVII Golf, though with plenty of added drama. The exterior is dominated by the 17-inch "Brooklyn" wheels wearing 225-section rubber, and the aggressive front fascia gets black honeycombed inserts in the upper and lower grille sections. At launch, Volkswagen will offer the GTI in three colors: the Pure White seen here, Tornado Red and Black. Tartan patterned seats are of course still an option for the interior, while the GTI-specific steering wheel and shift knob are standard.
