A blast from my younger days, a 1974 VW Super beetle convertible. What else can you say? In the 70's there were literally millions of bugs. My first car was a 69 beetle with a rag top and I drove it clean through college. I could yank the motor in minutes and kept it running for 8 years. I did tire of adjusting the valves and the brakes, but it ran when nothing else would. I found this car in the neighborhood and I couldn't resist. Even better than my old bug, this is the super beetle and handles really nice. But it is the full convertible and in excellent shape.

The previous owner used it as a tag car for his motor home. Being overly familiar with bugs, I had to check it out. Ran like new, great shape. Had to take it home. It had the common VW problem, bad pans but was otherwise rust free. The pans were easy to install. I kept the original AM radio but added a better stereo cassette deck (still have my old cassettes) The top is excellent, virtually new. I've had a blast reliving my college days and the teenagers won't drive it. Kids these days, I would have killed for a convertible but having boys the car is perhaps a tad feminine. I bet the girls would dig it but at 18 you just don't get it.

On the down side, the paint is faded. I can't see any evidence of any wreck or even a dent. The interior is OK, but it's that cheesy VW vinal. It's definitely back to basics transportation. The 4 speed and handling is great but you won't have to worry about going to fast. It will do highway speeds but you will notice the famous VW acceleration The car is quite presentable as is and could easily be brought up to show quality. I added a starter relay (common problem) but it's otherwise stock.

On the up side, well, it's the convertible. If you are familiar with these, they are about as simple and basic as it gets. It's big enough for 4 adults as it sits up fairly high, 1930's art deco styling. 30 years ago there were mountains of these for a few hundred bucks. To my surprise, they have become quite collectable. The top works perfect and I hooked up the heater. The super beetle gives you a better dash and a defrost blower. It's surprising just how practical the vehicle is and with the top down everyone checks it out. I'm into some neat old convertibles but this one is still cool and most people had a bug in their past, so they all want to check it out. The motor is strong, I suspect it was probably rebuilt at some point. The odometer gear was broken (now fixed) but I would assume it has a good 100K miles plus. This is the last year of the carburetor and I have heard bad things about the fuel injection in 1975. It does have an alternator too and just the typical tiny leak around the oil filter, that looks like it was never over torqued (a common issue). If you are not in too big a hurry it drives very nice, straight and tight.

Last, I'm a 100% seller and I have sold a lot of cars on ebay. This is a hobby and I find some nice rust free western cars. I like to understate the car, there is nothing worse than being told a car is rust free and it turns out to be a rust bucket. If the car isn't as advertised you can back out. It is my preference to have the car inspected in Denver as I have no interest in someone buying the car that isn't really into old cars, as they can be a bit "different" than newer cars. I would also prefer that you are familiar with beetles, it's an acquired taste and not for everyone. As for reserve, it's a bit high but if you are really interested I can work with you, so do contact me through ebay. Last, I like old convertibles so I'll entertain trades. Or even a small suv if its in good shape.

I have a number of project cars that need to get done, but it won't hurt my feelings if it doesn't sell. It's an easy car to own as it doesn't take too much space. The car is available to drive in Denver and I would not hesitate to drive it home cross country. Typical VW- started right up in 17 below zero and does fairly well in snow.

J.D. Power customer survey of dealers counts Cadillac, Buick as big winners

Mon, 14 Apr 2014

Cadillac and Buick have taken the trophies in J.D. Power's latest Customer Service Index Study examining satisfaction with dealer service. Surveying more than 90,000 owners and lessees of 2009-2013 model-year cars, the study found that those with pre-paid maintenance packages were ten percent more likely to buy their next car from the same brand.
Dealer satisfaction scores have improved overall, Cadillac nabbed the luxury segment ahead of Audi and Lexus, taking the crown that Lexus held last year. Buick keeps the mass-market dealer satisfaction win in the family, finishing ahead of Volkswagen and last year's winner GMC. The study also found that service department use of tablets increased customer satisfaction, as did "best practices" like "providing helpful advice." Who knew?
You can find details on those and more findings in the press release below.

VW announces reworked 6.0 W12 TSI engine

Mon, May 11 2015

Nobody makes more engines with a dozen cylinders than the Volkswagen Group. They're W12s, of course, owing to the novel shape of their cylinder banks. Now the German industrial giant has announced a comprehensively reworked version of that engine at the same Vienna Motor Symposium where it presented its new 2.0-liter turbo four. The new W12 retains the same arrangement and the same 6.0-liter displacement, but updates it all with the latest powertrain tech. In place of Audi's FSI direct injection and Bentley's TMPI multi-point injection, the engine has adopted a new TSI system. It's also got a pair of new twin-scroll turbochargers, APS-coated cylinders, a new cooling system, active engine mounts, cylinder deactivation, and a stop/start system. And – crucially for application in the upcoming Bentayga – it has an oil circuit designed for off-road use. The revised package now produces 600 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. Considerably more than the 567 hp and 516 lb-ft offered in the Bentley Continental GT W12, but less than the GT Speed, which we suspect will get an even more powerful version of this new engine. It's also more powerful than even the top version of Audi and Bentley's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, to make the W12 a more compelling option. Of course that's just as far as the Continental GT is concerned. The W12 has also found use in the Continental GTC and Flying Spur, as well as the Volkswagen Phaeton and Audi A8, and could find further applications under the Flying B emblem and elsewhere in the future. VW says that in the right application (say, in the production version of the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 concept, for example), the new twelve-pot could deliver 0-62 times of under four seconds and a top speed in excess of 186 miles per hour. Volkswagen at the 36th International Vienna Motor Symposium Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neusser: "The car of the future will continue to fascinate people" - CO2 reduction, electromobility and digitalisation are the greatest challenges facing the automotive industry - The future of the internal combustion engine will be characterised by high rpm diesel and high-performance three-cylinder TSI engines - Laser roughening – innovative coating process in large-scale production - New 6.0 W12 TSI with 447 kW (608 PS) – performance and refinement - New generation of EU6 TDI engines for light-duty vehicles Dr.

Jaguar Land Rover seeks to block U.S. imports of Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, VW SUVs

Fri, Nov 20 2020

You wouldn’t know it was about Jags and Lambos, to judge by its rather dry name: In the Matter of Certain Vehicle Control Systems. But thatÂ’s the complaint Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc filed on Thursday to block U.S. imports of Porsche, Lamborghini, Audi and Volkswagen sport utility vehicles it says are using its patented Terrain Response technology without permission. Jaguar Land Rover, a British carmaker owned by IndiaÂ’s Tata Motors Ltd., said in its filing with the U.S. International Trade Commission that the technology helps negotiate a “broad range of surfaces” and is a key feature in JaguarÂ’s F-Pace and Land Rover Discovery vehicles. “JLR seeks to protect itself and its United States operations from companies that have injected infringing products into the U.S. market that incorporate, without any license from JLR, technology developed by JLR and protected by its patent,” JaguarÂ’s lawyer, Matthew Moore, said in the filing. Representatives of Volkswagen didnÂ’t immediately respond to emails seeking comment on the complaint. Jaguar wants to block imports of PorscheÂ’s Cayenne; LamborghiniÂ’s Urus; AudiÂ’s Q8, Q7, Q5, A6 Allroad and e-tron vehicles; and VWÂ’s Tiguan vehicles. It said there are plenty of other luxury midsize SUV and compact crossover vehicles to meet consumer demand if the SUVs are banned from the U.S. Still, the premium Porsche and Audi lines provide much of the profit VW is using to fund its investments in technology for electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles and further innovations. In addition to the four brands, Volkswagen Group owns other upscale nameplates, including Bentley and Bugatti. The International Trade Commission is an independent, quasi-judicial agency that investigates complaints of unfair trade practices, like patent infringement. It canÂ’t award damages but does have the power to block products from entering the U.S. Owners of patents and trade secrets like it because it can work faster than the federal district courts -- the typical investigation is completed in 15 to 18 months. But Jaguar also filed patent lawsuits against the companies in federal courts in Delaware and New Jersey, seeking cash compensation for the use of the technology. Those cases are likely to be put on hold once the trade commission launches its investigation. The case is In the Matter of Certain Vehicle Control Systems, 337-3508, U.S. International Trade Commission (Washington).
