This VW is a true survivor. It was purchased in 1973 from the original owner that was drafted for the Vietnam War. The car had 8,000 miles at the time. The new owners wife did not like the car at all, so she refused to ride in it. Because of this, it was rarely driven. The owners daughters drove the car through their high school years. During this time, the rear left fender was damaged in a minor wreck and was repaired by the dealer. Other than this fender, the paint on the car is all original and shows very well. After high school this car basically sat in the garage untouched, other than the owner starting it up from time to time. The odometer broke with a little over 41,000 miles on it and they estimate another 5,000 miles to be on the car. The odometer can be repaired by any regular VW guy. The common problem is a broken gear inside the speedo and it can be purchased online for $30. This car is equipped with air conditioning. I had a shop vacuum the system down and it held vacuum and the compressor seems to be in good condition. I am pretty confident that the AC will work with a 134 conversion. The brakes work, but they definitely need some attention. I removed the gas tank and power washed it and dried it with compressed air. The main fuel line through the body was completely clogged with thick varnish from gas being left in the tank. I spent a whole day clearing this line out and I replaced the rubber fuel lines as well. I also had the carburetor rebuilt and it is in great condition now and the car runs beautifully. I installed 2 inline filters for the purpose of catching any debris that may still be in the fuel lines. The engine has never been removed! I chose not to over clean anything on this car. I really want the new owner to enjoy some of the "barn find" beauty that this car offers. The tires are very old bias ply tires, but they hold air. I opted to leave these on because of their originality. The spare looks to be the original and holds air as well. Under the front hood, this car is unbelievably original and it even has the original fiberboard trunk liner. The spare tire well is as clean and perfect as the rest of the car. I can not find any rust rot anywhere on this car anywhere. The pans are in great shape and do have very little surface rust in a few spots, but I assure you it has not penetrated anywhere. The battery section is very solid as well. On to the inside, the AM radio turns on and you can hear static, but the antenna is broken so I have been unable to pick up a station. The original floor mats and carpet are in very good condition as is the carpet. The front seats definitely need some attention but the rear seat is in good condition with the exception of a very small tear or 2. This bug is a special edition called the BAJA edition. Part of that edition was a leather wrapped steering wheel and walnut dash inserts as well as a fancy shifter :) These were all dealer installed packages and varied a little, but it still makes this a unique VW. The headliner is in beautiful condition, considering it is 40 years old. The dash is very nice as is the steering wheel and visors. Please ask any questions you may have and I will do my best to accurately answer them for you. Bid confidently! This car is a very rare find. You will not be disappointed in this VW. If you are local, you are very welcome to come inspect it in person.

Car and Driver shows off awesome 1960s ads
Fri, Sep 11 2015Someone must have recently rediscovered the keys to the archives at Car and Driver, and the access has been put to good use. Following last month's fantastic look at automotive ads from the '50s, there's now a new gallery running from March 1960 through December 1969. This collection provides a great overview of a decade full of iconic cars. If you're a fan of Carroll Shelby, particularly his Mustangs, then there's a lot to love among this group. One ad from July 1965 aimed to sell the GT350, but with an ocean of text and a tiny picture, it probably could've used a once-over by Don Draper's team. By December '65, the copywriters ironed out the problems with a spot proclaiming boldly "Shelby GT350 is 'Son of Cobra.'" The company offered some great accessories, too. For those into European motoring, there's a humorous attempt to sell the Alfa Romeo Giulia as both a racecar and family hauler. Toyota also boasts about the winning record for the 2000GT. Among the best text comes from BMW for lines like: "What's BMW got? The most advanced high-performance engine in any production car, for a cruising speed of 100 mph." Of course, Volkswagen's famous "Lemon" ad for the Beetle also gets its due here. Separately, each of these ads is fascinating, but taken together they tell the story of a great decade of motoring. Go give them all a read at Car and Driver. Foreign automakers pay from $38 to $65 per hour to non-union workers
Sun, Mar 29 2015As leaders for the United Auto Workers gather in Detroit for their Special Convention on Collective Bargaining to work out the negotiating stance for this year's new labor agreements with the Detroit 3 automakers, what they most want to do is figure out how to eliminate the two-tier wage scale. However, the lower Tier 2 wage has allowed the domestic automakers to reduce their labor costs, hire more workers, and compete better with their import competition. As it stands, per-hour labor rates including benefits are $58 at General Motors, $57 at Ford, and $48 at Fiat-Chrysler – a reflection of FCA's much greater number of Tier 2 workers. The Center for Automotive Research released a study of labor rates (including benefits) that put numbers to what the imports pay: Mercedes-Benz pays the most, at an average of $65 per hour, Volkswagen pays the least, at $38 per hour, and BMW is just a hair above that at $39 per hour. Among the Detroit competitors, Honda workers earn an average of $49 per hour, at Toyota it's $48 per hour, Nissan is $42 per hour, and Hyundai-Kia pays $41 per hour. The lower import wages are aided by their greater use of temporary workers compared to the domestics. Automotive News says the ten-dollar gap between those foreign camakers and the domestics turns out to about an extra $250 per car in labor, which adds up quickly when you're pumping out many millions of cars. That $250-per-car number is one that, come negotiating time, the Detroit 3 will want to reduce, as the UAW is trying to raise both Tier 1 and Tier 2 wages. Another wrinkle is that the domestic carmakers are considering the wide adoption of a third wage level lower than Tier 2. Some workers who do minor tasks like assembling parts trays kits and battery packs already make less than Tier 2, but the UAW will be quite wary about cementing yet another wage scale at the bottom of the system while it's trying to fight a bigger battle at the top. Volkswagen Group CEO Martin Winterkorn told European regulators that more stringent emissions standards too soon will be a major problem for automakers. He says that such moves could prove "fatal" for an auto industry that is still working to develop cleaner vehicles. "Every gram of CO2 that we save in our European fleet costs our group almost 100 million euros," says Winterkorn, "100 million that we have to invest in advance, without knowing when these investments pay off." He says that already creating emissions targets beyond those set for 2020 could harm European automakers competing globally. Read more at Automotive News Europe. When a Detroit Chevrolet dealership lost its Internet connection, it turned to one of its Chevy Volts for a temporary fix. After the regular connection at Buff Whelan Chevrolet went down, it plugged in a Volt showroom model equipped with 4G LTE, and used its connection to resume business. The car can handle up to seven connected devices, so the team used a Malibu to connect the rest of its computers. When a customer asked why the Volt was on, the team explained the whole situation, leading to one impressed customer. Read more at Automotive News.
