Hi everyone, and thanks for checking out my Beetle.
First, I want to get the bad news out of the way-this Beetle needs a new engine. It gave out on me while I was driving down Interstate 80. NOT a fun experience. If you're familiar with this cars, then you'll know that the engine is pretty easy to replace, and longblocks (and even complete) engines are pretty cheap. On the plus side, the engine has a lot of decent, usable parts still on it. I took off the oil filter, and some of the hoses, but I didn't take out anything else. Its all there, albeit frozen. The front left and right wheel well could stand to be replaced as well. The right is a bit worse than the left. I never replaced them because I don't have the workspace to do it in. There is also a bit of surface rust where the running board meets the right wheel well, but its not rot. Some of the rubber also needs to be replaced, specifically the front trunk and the rear deck lid rubber.
Now on to the good news-this car is pretty solid for being 40+ years old. The body is in good shape, without much rust. There's no rust around the crescent vents, which is a pretty rare thing for this part of the country, and which can be a hassle to properly fix. And, the floor pans were replaced by the previous owner. I couldn't get a good picture of them, but they're like new. There's some surface rust here and there, but I couldn't find any major rot anywhere.
The interior is also pretty nice. No major rust, though there is some carpet glue, and the headliner could stand to be replaced. The front seats are in good shape, and the backseat, while it has some tears, has a replacement cover. I just never got around to replacing it, since it was only ever me and my girlfriend. I never had much of a use for the backseat, so it didn't get much attention. I also replaced the front seat belts and latches with a 3-point retractable kit from Wolfsburg West, and the windshield wiper arms with a modern replacement from Jbugs. They take standard wiper blades, so no more expensive, stock blades.
All the glass is present, and in good shape. Some of it has some fog, but none of it needs replaced.
I do have a few things that set this Beetle apart from others here on Ebay-I have the original window sticker. The first owner kept it, and gave it to the next owner, who gave it to me when I bought the car. I also have the original owners manual, showing maintenence stamps all the way through 30,000 miles. But, what really sets this Beetle apart is the records that come with it. I have all the records of parts that the previous owner bought, as well as ones I've bought, so you know exactly what you're getting. I also have a couple boxes of spare parts, including some chrome trim, spare running boards, various cables, and a spare 34 Pict-3 carburetor. I'm also including a floor jack that I bought for the car, as well as four jack stands, and two collapsible wheel blocks.
Just to sum it up:
- The car needs a new engine, but has plenty of usable parts on it.
- The car itself is in good shape, without any of the problematic rust issues in places like the crescent vents
- Lots of records and spare parts to go along with the car.
I think that pretty well sums it up. I'd love to hold on to this car, but I'm a college student, and I just don't have the space to work on it. So, it's time to send it off, and let someone have it who will properly take care of it.
I will require a $400 deposit via paypal within 24 hours of the auction ending, with the remainder paid within a week. The buyer is also responsible for shipping the car, which needs to be done within a month of the auction ending. That's when I'm moving, and I don't want to move it to my new apartment. If you have any questions, or want any additional info or pictures, drop me a message letting me know, and I'll do whatever I can.

Audi spending an additional $2.5 billion on expansion through 2019
Thu, Jan 1 2015Every year, it seems the Volkswagen Group announces a new and larger spend to push growth and profit, with Audi a regular recipient of the moolah. That's reasonable, seeing as hauls in 40 percent of Group operating profits. In December last year Audi said it would spend an additional 100 million euros ($122M US) per year through 2018 to develop new models and expand production, targeting 60 models by 2020 and luxury sales leadership. This month Audi said it will boost that by another two billion euros ($2.5B US) over the next five years, for a total outlay of 24 billion euros from 2014 to 2019. Something like 70 percent of those billions will be spent on new models, technology like "connectivity and lightweight construction," and factory expansion at its plants in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. Most of the ten models that will plump the lineup to 60 cars will mainly be aimed at the C and D segments, as well as crossovers, the brand's burgeoning portfolio of PHEV models, and all-electric cars that will begin staking ground in the segment. The big spend comes at the same time as Audi is working hard to reduce costs by $2.5 billion to maintain profitability, part of a larger push by VW to cut costs by $6.1 billion by 2017. More than a billion euros will go to new factories in Mexico and Brazil. Work begins on the Mexico plant next year, and when it comes on-line in 2016, Audi's Q5 successor will roll out of its warehouse doors; Audi has already announced it will hire 850 more workers next year in Mexico. When that's done, Mexico's production of German luxury cars will only trail that of Germany, China and the US. The company's Brazil plant will produce the A3 and S3 starting next year, and the brand figures luxury car buying there will triple by 2017. Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe is a green fun-machine we want to drive
Fri, 19 Apr 2013Think back to January's Detroit Auto Show. Those of you that are fans of the Volkswagen brand, impressed with green technology or simply fall into the "diesel geek" category, will almost certainly remember VW's CrossBlue concept with its diesel/electric hybrid powertrain, seating for seven, and somewhat awkward crossover styling. It was an impressive piece of future tech, to be sure, though it left something to be desired in the, well, desirability department.
Here in Shanghai, VW has brought along a CrossBlue Coupe concept that would seem to include most of the goodness of the original, but flavored with more sport and style this time around.
The CrossBlue Coupe makes use of the same electric drive components as the larger three-row concept: two electric motors (front and rear) powered by a 9.8-kWh lithium-ion battery. However, where the original concept made use of a TDI four-cylinder, the Coupe substitutes a 295-horsepower, direct-injection, gasoline-burning V6.
Toyota holds onto crown of World's Largest Automaker
Thu, Jan 22 2015Although there were hints and allegations that the Volkswagen Group might have taken the global sales crown for 2014, the final tally puts Toyota at the top with 10.23 million sales in 2014. We should really say it keeps Toyota at the top, since that makes three years in a row the Japanese company has been No. 1. Volkswagen Group came in second with 10.14 million units sold, General Motors in third with 9.92 million units sold. This the first time for both Toyota and Volkswagen to pass 10 million sales in a single year. Toyota, including its Hino and Daihatsu divisions, did it with a three-percent increase in company-wide sales on the back of strong demand in Japan and the US. Its strength in developed markets might be the reason it loses the title this year, though; Toyota forecasts a two-percent gain in sales outside of Japan, but a nine-percent drop in its home market because of a new consumption tax that encouraged buyers to purchase before the end of last year. On top of that, turmoil in Southeast Asian economies like Thailand and Indonesia depressed sales in 2014 and they're facing more headwinds. The company envisions 10.15 million sales in 2015. Volkswagen, on the other hand, "has a jet engine strapped to its back called 'China,'" where Toyota is out-of-sorts. Volkswagen Group sales fell 2.9 percent in the US last year, while Toyota gained 6.2 percent here. But Volkswagen roped in 3.7 million sales in China, a 12-percent increase. Toyota enjoyed a huge bump of 12.5 percent in China, but that only got it to 1.03 million units, missing its yearly target and leading to trouble with its Chinese dealers over unsold inventory. With Toyota on the Chinese sidelines while Volkswagen guns for No. 1 status and pledges more production capacity in China – sales there are expected to top 25 million units this year – it looks like this could be the year the VW Group takes over the lead. That would be three years ahead of its original target of 2018. An analyst in Japan said Toyota is more focused on "keeping profitability than chasing numbers" – profitability is an issue for VW right now – so Toyota might not be back at the top "for [the] coming years."
