Here is my personal 1970 Volkswagen Beetle. I have owned the car for just about three years. Our needs have changed and are in need of a small pickup truck. I have grown up around Volkswagens and these cars are a part of my life (my dad was a Cerified Volkswagen Air Cooled Specialist). I will try to thoroughly document my time with this car.
I purchased it in November of 2011. It was leaking oil at the main seal so I went ahead and rebuilt the engine, keeping it a single port, but bumping it to a 1641 CC with new pistons. Electronic ignition, Solex 30/31 carb, mechanical advance distributor, later (larger) oil cooler, fan and shroud. EMPI air filter (which I don't like using as this is the second one that broke on me hence the tape you see in the photos). The oil bath I have for it does not fit. ORIGINAL rain catcher for the engine compartment is here. I am approximating the mileage as I have not kept track. The biggest trip I took with it was the 600 mile trip from Northern California to Idaho when we moved here. About a year ago I had to have a local VW specialist mechanic put case savers in for me. I had to replace the heads and the studs were pulling from the right side of the case. Has been running great since. The original car color was Desert Sand, but the previous owner primered the roof (more on that in a bit), so we took the car apart and painted it Firemist Red Metallic. The entire pan, inside and out, including the space behind the backseat has been treated with POR-15. Any rust holes were patched with POR-15 repair kit. It's SOLID. I put plush carpet in the car and stock VW carpet over that. New window seals, rubber, fender welt, etc. The only rubber we didn't replace was the scrapers. New headliner. New windshield wiper motor. I replaced the stock speedometer with a one-year only 1968 one. New sun visors. The front turnsignals are early model repros. I have a Bugpack lighted license plate frame on the front. JVC CD stereo with four speakers. Bamboo parcel shelf, center console, EMPI glove box, EMPI early wire cover (I covered the front hood vents). Inside on the dash, I removed the padded dash, shaved any superfluous holes and painted to match the exterior. New running boards, too. Let's say this... anything that needed to be replaced HAS BEEN REPLACED!!! When I purchased the Bug it was lowered and equipped with front disc brakes. Stops on a dime and the ride is solid. I added a Unique Parts clutch bearing shaft to the clutch pedal. No more broken clutch cables and the clutch is smooth. Transmission is smooth, shifts in all four gears and reverse. Now the story about the white roof. The previous owner told me there was a small dent in the roof so he Bondoed the dent after trying to bang it out. Well, he Bondoed the WHOLE ROOF!!! Once we got to Idaho and the freezing winter weather, the roof started to crack. We sanded the entire roof and the plan was to repaint it next spring with the Firemist Red Metallic (we would have to order more), but it looks like a faux ragtop. You can do what you want with it. Back to the car... the wiring is all solid. The reverse lights are not hooked up and the signal cancelling ring is off, so you have to remember to manually shut off the turnsignals when you use them. I regularly tune up the Bug and change the oil religiously. In summer I use HD-40 and winter HD-30. By the way... the horn works. There are some small dings here and there on the car, especially around the driver side door from the seat belt. Oh, it has front retractable three point seat belts and lap belts for the back seat. I had the rear tires replaced a year ago. The front tires still have life on them, but should be replaced by winter time. It is hard for me to part with this Bug. I only plan on keeping it listed for one week. It's like getting rid of a friend. Clean Idaho title. You will need to pick up or arrange shipping through a shipping company. $500.00 deposit required through PayPal immediately and the balance can be sent via PayPal or certified bank check before you pick it up. Once full payment is made I will be more than happy to send you the title so you can get it registered before you pick it up. Please let me know if your state requires that you need a notarized Bill Of Sale. Before you ask, I feel you can drive this anywhere, but it is an old Volkswagen and you should be prepared with tools, jack, etc. I am including the spare tire, two new fan belts and fuses. VW updates Scirocco with revised styling, new engines
Sun, 16 Feb 2014The Scirocco is undoubtedly one of the better-looking models in the Volkswagen lineup, but introduced back in 2008, it's now been on the market - some markets, anyway - for the better part of six years. VW is said to have an all-new replacement in the works, but before that arrives, the German automaker has announced a facelifted version with revised styling and a new engine lineup.
Set to be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show next month, the new Scirocco benefits from updated styling front and rear, high-tech exterior lighting, a revised cabin space with some throwback retro touches, some new technologies and, of course, an array of fresh wheel options ranging from 17 to 19 inches.
The updated Scirocco will be offered with a wide array of engines right from the get-go, including four gasoline options and two diesels, spanning from 125 horsepower all the way up to the 280-hp Scirocco R. The 2014 model hits European showrooms in August, but unfortunately isn't any more likely to make the transatlantic voyage Stateside than the version it replaces. Still interested? Recharge Wrap-up: Smart Ready for Rent, MOIA comes to US in 2018
Mon, Dec 12 2016Daimler is launching its "Smart Ready to Rent" service in Europe. Beginning this month in German and French cities, the rental scheme bridges the gap between short-term Car2go rentals and longer leases. Customers book the Smart model of their choice – including the emissions-free Electric Drive and the hotter Brabus versions – for a period of one day up to three months. As such, Smart Ready to Rent is useful to those who live outside of an urban center. Users can book a car online or through a dealer, and vehicles are collected and returned at the dealership. Read more at Green Car Congress. Volkswagen will launch its MOIA mobility arm in the US in 2018. The recently announced brand will take on public transportation as a competitor with services such as ride hailing and car sharing. VW is looking into forging partnerships with the likes of technology and ride sharing companies. The automaker also expects to show an electric shuttle-type concept in 2017 for pooling services, but will use the three-row VW Atlas crossover in the meantime until that concept reaches production. Look to see MOIA emerging in major cities along the US coasts. Read more at Automotive News. A new report from Lux Research suggests that most EV batteries are better off being recycled than reused. Once lithium-ion batteries have outlived their usefulness for automotive duty, some automakers (BMW, Nissan, and Toyota included) are looking at ways to use their remaining capacity, such as for stationary energy storage. The new report, though, says that reusing batteries offers "questionable returns on account of reduced performance." Better to be like Tesla, and just recycle them. Read more at Hybrid Cars. Skoda's next concept is a 300-mile electric SUV
Wed, Mar 29 2017If you thought Volkswagen wasn't serious about electric vehicles, think again. Its subsidiary Skoda will reveal an electric SUV concept called the Vision E at the Shanghai auto show in a few weeks. Not only is it the fourth all-electric concept shown by the VW group (following the I.D., I.D. Buzz, and Sedric), but it previews the electrified future of Skoda, which announced that it will have five pure EVs in its lineup by 2025. The Vision E is just as impressive as the company's electric ambitions, too. It boasts a roughly 310-mile range on a charge, and packs a motor that makes about 300 horsepower. The car will be capable of level 3 autonomy, which will allow it to operate autonomously on highways, in stop-and-go traffic, and to find parking spaces. Its top speed isn't amazing at around 111 mph, but it isn't a sports car. Rather, it's an "SUV coupe" similar to the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. As such it has a more sedan-like back. The styling is also unique with full-width headlights and foglights, and another lighting element that extends from the front fender down the doors. The only obviously Skoda styling cue is the bulge down the center of the hood. The Vision E is also similar to the X6 and GLC Coupe in other ways. Its specs are quite close to those crossovers, particularly the Mercedes. It's a few inches shorter than the GLC Coupe, but it's an inch wider. It also makes the same amount of horsepower as the entry-level X6 and outguns the Mercedes by an impressive 59 horsepower. Of course, these are figures currently only projected and hypothetical since the Vision E is a concept, but it helps us get an idea of what this vehicle is like. So far, Skoda has only released sketches of the concept. We'll have to wait until the Shanghai show to see the real thing. Related Video:
