As the Ad read… A Lot Of Cars Appear To Change And Don't, A Volkswagen doesn't appear to change and does.

Take the 1969 Volkswagen 1500. The bug. Same familiar shape but with 78 changes to make it work better.

It has a dual braking system. If one stops, the other stops you. Vertical headlights so you can see where you're going, better and bigger tail lights so others can see where you're going better.

There are non-tilt safety locks on all seats. Soft plastic dashboard control knobs, the point is there are no points. Recessed door handles inside have a safety lock (you have to unlock it before you can open a door).

The steering column is collapsible. If you bump something it won't bump you. Volkswagen's big wheels are still big but now you have new safety rims, so a sudden flat doesn't have to mean a tireless rim. Rear wheels track wider so they stick to their job better.

Two new big rear vision mirrors let you know what's going on behind your back and side. Push the inside mirror and it pops out.

The bug has lap and sash seat belts on the front seats and anchor points all round, and there are new bigger windscreen washers to wash the bigger windscreen and new two-speed wipers to wipe it quicker.

But safety is only half the story. The '69 Volkswagen is the most comfortable VW ever made. Take the bucket seats. Over the years they've been changed fifty times.

Now they're softer and more adjustable. You actually get more head and leg room than cars feet longer. The Volkswagen's suspension has been improved.

All four wheels are independently sprung and, on the back torsion bar, an equalizer spring has been added to keep the bug flat on the road. The torsion bars keep the ride softer, even fully laden. A new, fresh-air system makes the Volkswagen a little less air-tight and a heater demister works through six outlets.

Among the other important changes in the '69 VW is a more powerful 1500 cc engine. It will take you 0-50 in 12 seconds flat and has a top speed around 80 that you can cruise at al/ Yes, it's also the fastest bug ever.

Some things haven't changed. Like the slick, smooth 4-speed all-synch gearbox. Or the ideas about rear engine traction, the aerodynamic body shape, or the reputation for dependability and economy.

You still get 32 miles a gallon and around 30,000 miles from a set of tires. Volkswagen still believes that sometimes a change isn't always an improvement.

As VW electrifies, it questions the role of Lamborghini, Bugatti, Ducati

Wed, Sep 30 2020

FRANKFURT — Volkswagen needs to change to stay relevant in the electric and digital vehicle era and will announce "important steps" to that end before the close of the year, Chief Executive Herbert Diess said on Wednesday. "Volkswagen needs to change: From a collection of valuable brands and fascinating combustion-engine products that thrill customers with superb engineering — to a digital company that reliably operates millions of mobility devices worldwide," Diess told shareholders at the company's virtual general meeting. Vehicles need to stay in contact with customers, offer new services and comfort functions on a weekly or even daily basis, he said. "We will take further important steps to set the course for this in the rest of 2020," Diess said. Senior executives told Reuters the company is reviewing what role its high-performance brands Lamborghini, Bugatti and Ducati will play as the company increasingly focuses on electric, digital and autonomous vehicles. Volkswagen, which also owns VW, Audi, Porsche, Seat and Skoda, is looking at whether it has the resources to accelerate development of electric platforms for smaller brands at a time it is investing billions to transform its more mainstream cars. Asked whether Ducati, which is known for making noisy combustion-engined motorbikes, has an electric future, Markus Duesmann, who oversees research and development for the group, said: "It will not take long until we see an electric Ducati." Whether Ducati, which is a medium-sized premium motorbike brand, would offer an electric variant, depends on whether a bike could offer range comparable to a combustion-engined variant, Duesmann said. Advances are being made in battery technology which could make this possible, he added. Separately Frank Witter, the company's chief financial officer, in response to a question about whether a sale of Lamborghini is planned, said Volkswagen does not comment on speculation about potential divestments. Lamborghini's Chief Executive Stefano Domenicali this week announced his departure from the sports car maker to take on a new job as president of Formula One. VW needs cash Volkswagen is reviewing the future of these three high-performance brands as part of broader quest for more economies of scale as it shifts to mass producing electric cars, senior executives told Reuters.

2015 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

Thu, Jan 29 2015

Volkswagen calls its 2015 Jetta "refined, redesigned," and countless man-hours have gone into its re-engineering, but you'd need to crawl all over the car, unbolt most of the body, drive it or spend some time on VW's website to fathom the changes. That's why we wrote, "2015 Volkswagen Jetta is new, we promise," when we first saw the car in New York last April. While we wait for a sweeping next-generation overhaul to come, the marquee elements for now are the new structure underneath designed to win an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, fuel economy increases and a heavily reworked 2.0 TDI diesel engine. Plus, there's ornamental detailing around the body and updated interior, and the revamped trim package and accessories matrix promises to provide more value. That makes it a better buy than the 2014 model, assuming it can find buyers ready to appreciate the subtleties. Outside, improved aerodynamic prowess is the primary goal, and almost all of the visual refresh works to further that aim. A new grille with three cross fins sits atop a slipperier bumper and air intakes. On models with the 1.8T gas engine and new 2.0 TDI diesel, the grille is fitted with a shutter to decrease drag and, on the diesel, speed up the engine warming. There are sleeker rain gutters inside the A-pillars and paneling under the body by the rear axles. Attending to airflow in back is an altered decklid reshaped with an integrated spoiler. Among the other changes are optional adaptive bi-Xenon headlights lined with 15 LED running lights and a chrome strip of brightwork. New fog lights are set in the flanks of the lower lip, and LED taillights can be had on the GLI and Hybrid models, with a tweaked VW logo sitting in between. The illuminating upgrades continue inside with ambient lighting and a crisper dash cluster display. Those cabin changes are joined by an optional "tunnel" theme for the gauges, a new steering wheel design with piano black accents and chrome, redesigned vent controls and new fabric options. Changes to the front substructure from the bumper to the front doors, and strengthened A-pillars combined to win the 2015 sedan a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. We're here to focus on the diesel model, and the updated EA288 2.0 TDI engine and its modular packaging is the most visceral highlight for 2015, inserting new numbers on every line of the spec sheet compared to its predecessor, save for cylinder bore spacing.

2015 VW Golf R ready for your pre-order on January 8

Mon, Dec 22 2014

If you want to be the first person on your block with Volkswagen's latest Golf R parked in your garage, you need to clear some time from your schedule on January 8. On that day, VW is opening the pre-order books for the first 500 Stateside examples of the new hot hatch, and they come with some neat accessories, too. Don't worry about specing just the right Golf R because all 500 early models are identical. In addition to the obvious 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 292 horsepower 280 pound-feet of torque and 4Motion all-wheel drive, the six-speed dual-clutch gearbox is the only option here. Every one of these hot hatches comes in Lapiz Blue Metallic paint with 19-inch wheels covered in summer performance tires. Based around the DCC and Nav trim, each of them also has VW's adaptive damper system, bi-xenon headlights with LED running lights, a Fender audio system, parking sensors and navigation. Beyond just being the first ones to own VW's latest hot hatch in the US, the deal for these 500 folks also includes a Volkswagen R watch, carbon fiber and stainless steel keychain and a certificate. All three items are serialized to match the VIN of the buyer's Golf R. The total price for each one of these 500 Golf R's is $39,090, plus $820 destination and delivery. But potential buyers don't have to come up with all of that on January 8. They just need to visit VW's Golf R site and pay a $500 reservation fee to get in line, which goes toward the purchase of the car. The money is refundable for anyone who backs out, and any additional orders are put on a waiting list in case of any cancelations.
