1969 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible - Solid Car, Easy Restoration Or Drive As Is on 2040-cars
Del Mar, California, United States
1969 Volkswagen Convertible. Solid restorable car that runs and drives well. Valuable upgrades include 1600 dual port engine (engine code AE), disc brakes and nice custom wheels. It also has a Scat shifter with a safety reverse lock-out. The previous owner mentioned the engine was rebuilt about 5 years ago. This was not her only car and her other one was used for commuting. This car needs a paint job and seats reupholstered. The top is showing some age, but is serviceable as-is. The header bow is warped but the top latches easily. It looks like the roof rail rubber seals have been replaced at some time as well as the inside and outside window scrapers. They are too soft and flexible to be original. The dash pad has no cracks and has the radio delete panel still intact. The car comes with a new black carpet kit still in the box. The engine starts right up, idles smooth and can pull a hill good in 4th gear. The clutch does not slip. The two front tires are very good and the rear two are so-so but do match. Brake pedal is solid and high. I have a receipt for the front ball joint replacement and the front shocks are not that old from their appearance. There is an exhaust leak where the muffler connects to the right heater box. Not rusted, but it looks like the donut seal is leaking. The horn does not work. The headlights and taillights work, as well as the wipers. This car is solid with only a small area of floorpan rust on the passenger side under the
battery. It was repaired once before with a section of matching floorpan. The rest of the pan, rocker
panels, jack points, shock mounts, torsion tubes and wheelwells are very solid. The front apron is pushed up from what looks like a careless jacking attempt or running up on a high curb. It would be easier to pound it back into shape rather than replacing it. Like any 45 year old car, it has had a fender bender, The picture of the inside of the LF wheelwell area shows a small crinkle, but is was pulled well and the front fenders and hood line up. The hood has some rust on the bottom edge and I recommend replacing it with a good used one. There are no signs of collision in the back end. The engine cover was replaced by the mechanic that rebuilt the engine because he recommended the later version with more vents for better cooling. I have tried to provide good pictures to show how solid the car is and any bad areas. If you are
looking for a reasonably priced bug convertible this is it. You can drive it
as-is and do a little work at a time or restore it all at once depending on
your financial situation. Car is sold
as-is. Pre-purchase inspections allowed before end of auction. Car is located in the San Diego, CA area and has a clean WA State title. It was purchased in CA, then spent a few years in WA and then came back to CA. I have tried to describe this car as best as I can. Please email
me with any questions. I would be happy to answer them. |

1 in 7 Americans say they might buy an EV next, as sales of electrics surge
Wed, Apr 26 2017About one in seven driving Americans may likely purchase an electric vehicle as their next car, according to an AAA poll, meaning that as many as 30 million Americans may pony up for an EV within the next three to five years. While some of the motivation is environmental, survey recipients say that lower maintenance expenses and solo access to high-occupancy-vehicle lanes are also among the factors behind potentially going electric. Take a look at the AAA press release on the study here. The poll indicates that about as many people are planning to buy an EV for their next car as are looking to buy a pickup, which is impressive given that the best-selling US vehicle is the Ford F-150. And things should only improve, as about 20 percent of millennials polled said that their next car would probably be an EV. The results are all the more encouraging, at least among green-car advocates, because gas prices have fallen about 40 percent within the past five years, meaning that there's less of an incentive to go electric from a purely economic perspective. Through the first quarter of this year, US plug-in vehicle sales were up about 63 percent from a year earlier to about 39,000 vehicles. Meanwhile, when it came to AAA's annual green-vehicle awards for this year, Tesla's Model S and Model X took the large car and SUV categories, respectively, while the Chevrolet Bolt and Volkswagen e-Golf were listed atop the subcompact and compact lists. The Lexus GS 450h hybrid and the Ford F-150 took home AAA's best green vehicle in the midsize and pickup truck categories. Related Video:
VW makes $23K on every Porsche sold, more than Bentley or Lamborghini
Fri, 14 Mar 2014It's a good time to be in the luxury car business. In Volkswagen Group's financial report for the 2013 fiscal year, it is revealed that that Porsche enjoyed an operating margin of 18 percent. That means the Stuttgart brand made on average about $23,200 per car sold, according to BusinessWeek. Bentley wasn't far behind, and Audi (which was combined with Lamborghini) posted a 10.1 percent margin. This compares to only around 2.9 percent for the Volkswagen brand.
"Luxury brands are on fire," said Dave Sullivan, an industry analyst at AutoPacific. He said that the average profit margin is between six and eight percent. Brands like Porsche and Bentley have the benefit of competing in rarefied markets. Buyers looking at one their vehicles have fewer models to shop against and don't care as much about price. They can also charge more for options, which further boosts income, according to BusinessWeek.
In a way, we should be more impressed by the continued success from Audi. Its models generally have direct competitors in every segment from the other premium automakers. Plus, their buyers aren't the captains of industry who are shopping for a Bentley. Still, the Four Rings is leading rivals in sales so far this year.
2023 CES Editors' Picks
Mon, Jan 9 2023Over the past few years, it has become more and more clear that the Consumer Electronics Show is a car show. And this year that reality is more clear than ever. Not only did established automakers show off seriously important vehicles, but a traditional electronics company brought a car that gives an idea of its intents (with the help of establishment car company). With so many car reveals, we had to rank our favorites. Our picks for this show are entirely electric. Or at least, they are on paper, since many are concepts. Considering the name of the show, it would be a little strange if they weren't. In fact, not only are many of our favorites concepts, they all are save for one. See how they shook out below. VW ID7 camo View 28 Photos 5. Volkswagen ID.7 "The ID.7 definitely got lost in the crowd at CES. That it was camouflaged definitely didn't help, even if that camo was electroluminescent (BMW trumped it big time with its color-changing Dee). Nevertheless, this is a close-to-production hatchback-ed sedan, not unlike today's Arteon, with an extra-long wheelbase courtesy its EV architecture. It should be a solid answer to the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6, and even if people obviously prefer SUVs now, VW says there is still a market for sedans. I know I'd probably prefer one." –Senior Editor, West Coast and Reviews, James Riswick Peugeot Inception concept View 12 Photos 4. Peugeot Inception "It's not often that show debuts surprise us. While Peugeot teased the Inception ahead of CES, its unveiling seemed almost incidental. But just look at this thing; it's like an electric French Mustang with someplace important to be. I don't buy into the stupid 'It's not a wheel!' thing that Peugeot CEO Linda Jackson described as providing a video-game-like drive experience, but that bit of silliness aside, this is a really promising design study. Give us more of these and fewer tall boxes, please." –Associate Editor Byron Hurd Afeela prototype from Sony Honda Mobility View 11 Photos 3. Afeela by Sony Honda “Ever since Sony showed off an impressively put-together concept car at CES a few years ago, IÂ’ve been anticipating the companyÂ’s next move. Apparently, that next move is “Afeela.” No, I donÂ’t love the name. The specs from SonyÂ’s original concept car give me hope that this prototype sportback (itÂ’s a hatchback!) will be fun to drive, though.
