 1969 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible, In 2007 my son suggested a father-son project and we purchased this Beetle. She had been sitting for 12 years or more so we had to rebuild her from the ground up. Every day for 2 years, my son drove her to and from high school, yes a daily drive. And he says it was the best conversation starter ever. In November 2013, we stripped the body down to the bare metal and then Autoplex of Lewisville, TX gave her a beautiful new paint job in the original VW Diamond Blue color. Note, this color has stood the test of time and is even available 40 years later. She has new convertible top w/ tonto cover, refreshed dual port engine in 2011 (holds a whopping 2 quarts of oil), Pertronix distributer with electronic ignition, new support rails, electric fuel pump, new fuel tank, new brakes (master & all slaves replaced, yes original drum brakes all around), new front end ball joints, new interior upholstery and carpet, new rubber seals, new tires. She is a daily driver. Note this is not a super beetle, this is a classic beetle. She has over over $20,000 in parts plus countless hours of labor. Car is sold AS-IS, no warranty.

RE: How was the body prepared?
Feel free to call Antonio Sanchez ( antonio@lewisvilleautoplex.com 9722199008 ) manager or Taylor James ( tech lead on my car ) of Lewisville Autoplex, ie the body shop I used. Antonio & Taylor know her well. We had to strip the car to bare metal before Autoplex would work on the car. 


Were all the body parts taken down to bare metal?
Yes. Note, all lights, doors, hood, rear deck & fenders were all removed before paint.

Any bondo / filler anywhere?
I am sure there is some, but not much for a 40 year old car.  Ask Antonio or Taylor for their opinion.


Was a primer used?
Absolutely.

What kind of paint was used?
PPG ( I am biased but I love PPG paint. And PPG matches the original VW Diamond Blue ).

What about the floor pan, were any metal sheets parts replaced? just painted or covered in undercoating?
Left rear fender was replaced & 2/3rd of the passenger side floor pan was replaced due to the battery area rust.  The rest of the panels were not replaced.

Any details on what was done to "refresh" the engine in 2011? Complete overhaul, partial rebuilt?
Call Kellie or Lanny at the Bug Stop ( 817-274-7890 )  and ask them for details.  I recall the engine was a complete dual port, short block with `refreshed` bearings, but they know the details.   She runs great.

Volkswagen hatches hotter GTI in Geneva

The all-new seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf hasn't even launched here in the United States, but over in Geneva, we're already getting our first glimpse at the hotter GTI hatchback. The fancy new Mk VII Golf is already off to a healthy start with positive reviews in Europe, and we have no doubt that this next GTI will work hard to regain its title as king of the hot hatches.
The big news for this generation of GTI is that for the first time ever, Volkswagen is actually offering two different power grades for the model, both relying on the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four. Standard cars pack 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, but an optional performance pack ups the horsepower number to 230. Hitting 60 miles per hour takes 6.5 seconds (6.4 with the performance pack) and top speed is quoted at 153 mph (or 155 with the performance kit). Volkswagen will continue to offer the GTI with both six-speed manual and dual-clutch transmissions.
On the visual front, the sub-3,000-pound GTI adds the usual bit of hot hatch aggression over the standard Golf, and those changes carry over to the interior with a flat-bottomed wheel and, of course, plaid seats. She's certainly a looker, and while some of us do find the new Golf's design to be a bit staid and evolutionary, the enhancements for the GTI indeed tug on our enthusiast heart strings.

VW CEO talks up 20 new plug-in models in Frankfurt

For years now, Volkswagen has dreamed big, forming plans to become the world's largest automaker. That trajectory includes a big plug-in vehicle push, and the CEO of Volkswagen, Martin Winterkorn, said that his group of companies will bring out 20 more EVs and plug-in hybrids by 2020. The list includes the next Phaeton and the Audi A8. "No commitment to electro-mobility can be any clearer than that," Winterkorn said, according to a VW press release. "Our Group already has the largest connected vehicle fleet on the road. By 2020 we will have transformed all of our new cars into smartphones on wheels." Perhaps most illustrative, Winterkorn admitted that the auto industry has turned a corner. "Technological leadership is no longer solely defined in terms of horsepower and torque," he said. "We are taking the precision, enduring value and quality of our cars into the new, digital world." The VW group is also showing off new plug-in concepts in Frankfurt this week, like the Tiguan GTE and the Porsche Mission E. Audi investing $30.3 billion through 2018 for product expansion

How does Audi plan to reach two million units in annual sales and pay for the 11 new models it's adding to its lineup - an expansion that may include models named SQ2, Q9 and F-Tron? By increasing its investment to 22 billion euros ($30.3 billion US) between now and 2018. That figure represents an increase of about 500 million euros over the previously planned outlay, according to a report by Automotive News, and that could be due to Audi wishing to goad the momentum that pushed it to 1.5 million annual sales two years ahead of schedule.
It's also about staving off the challenges from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Now that BMW has been able to turn some of its attention away from its "i" series of Megacity cars, it will reportedly spend more than planned in 2014 as it continues the rollout of ten all-new vehicles and 15 new-generation vehicles through the end of next year. Mercedes, having been dropped to third in the sales race, is preparing to add 13 new cars over the next six years.
Audi's money is going into technology, into product like the next-generation TT and the Q1 and production expansions and upgrades all over the world. The expenditure represents just under a fourth of Volkswagen's 84.2 billion-euro ($115.7 US) outlay devoted to taking the number-one global automaker title away from General Motors and Toyota by 2018.
