I'm selling a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle. This car is an antique. It's not in brand new shape. The engine code indicates it is an early 1970 1600 cc engine. I got that from a website but do not know for certain as I am not a VW fanatic. I bought this car for my kid. When she saw it she said "I meant the New Beetle"...It does run and go into gear. I've never driven it as it is not plated or insured.
It has a new master cylinder, all new brake lines and both rear wheel cylinders. The bleeders on the front came loose so I didn't need to replace them. The brake shoes all looked good so I did not replace them. The rear wheel cylinders did not leak, the bleeders snapped when I tried to open them.
I have installed an electric fuel pump. The mechanical fuel pump is still on the car but I have run the fuel through the electric pump.
I replaced the original sized tires with Continental ContProContact 185/65/15 tires. It rides, steers and look better(not to mention a heck of a lot easier to find a replacement for). The spare is an original size brand new full sized spare. It still has nipples and holds air.
It has new carpeting and a pretty sweet set of aftermarket seat covers. The original seat covers are ripped. If you are going to restore this car, plan on doing the seats. I checked out process and they are remarkably affordable, but the seat covers were way more affordable so that's what it got. The roof liner is in good shape and the door panels are mint. There are a couple of sun related cracks on the dash but I've seen way worse.
What I liked about this car is the floor is pretty damned solid. Having heard these cars are infamous for floor rot I checked it out pretty well. There is a 2 or 3 inch soft spot on the drivers side heater channel (is that what its called?) and it looks like there was a minor floor patch on the passenger rear floor pan, but the rest is solid. The running boards are complete junk.
The body on this car is in fantastic shape for a 1969 car of any kind. In walking around the car this is what you'll find: Center body front has a rot spot where the spare sits. Replacement panels are available for this. The right front fender has a small surface rust spot and looks like it had some repairs in the past as there is some primer on that fender. The passenger side fender mount panel (again- I have no idea what it is called) has some surface rust around the fuel tank door but nothing through the metal. The passenger side door has not rust or dents. The passenger side quarter panel has some paint bubbles indicating some rust starting and no dents. The passenger side rear fender has a small dent and scrape but no rust. The engine lid has no rust or dents that I see. The panel that goes across the back above and below the trunk lid is in great shape. The drivers side rear quarter panel has a few bubbles down low by the floorboards and the drivers side rear fender has one small blister. The drivers door would be perfect except that some idiot put a dent in the panel up high (even with the handle and about in the center). The drivers side front fender and mount panel are clean. there is a small amount of rust on the front bottom leading edge of the fender. doesn't go through and appears to be surface rust only. The roof is in great shapes and has no rust. The hood is in good shape but also has a primer spot on it indicating a past repair. The bumpers are rusty. I do have one new bumper but I forget whether its front or rear.
This may be excessive, but this car really is clean compared to most of the rusted out beasts you'll see. I wanted to fully disclose anything wrong with this vehicle, not scare people away. This car is perfect for the serious VW'er looking for a new project. Let me know if you have any questions.

Recharge Wrap-up: 2015 Fuel Economy Guide available, how Porsche ships 919 Hybrid
Fri, Nov 7 2014The EPA and Department of Energy have released the 2015 Fuel Economy Guide. Unsurprisingly, the groups say that this year features more fuel efficient and low-emissions vehicles than previous years, and they span a greater variety of vehicle types. The guide also provides "best-in-class" lists, greenhouse gas ratings and estimated fuel costs for each vehicle. The EPA and DOE hope that car buyers will use the guide to help choose cars that are better for the environment and the climate. Check out the guide for yourself or read more in the press release below. To get from one WEC race to the next, Porsche ships its 919 Hybrid LMP1 cars by air. As the team travels around the world - from continent to continent - it must take 35 tons worth of cargo with it, including two LMP1 cars. That means draining fluids, partially dismantling the cars, and fitting everything into a 747. The team also ships items by sea, which requires shipping extra sets of items due to the longer shipping times. "It's all about efficiency," according to Porsche. The A4000i, which features smartphone connectivity, will be the company's European flagship model. Terra Motors will begin selling in Italy, and plans to make arrangements to sell in several more countries shortly after. Terra hopes to set up manufacturing in Europe, as well. Also on display at EICMA is the company's Bizmo II electric scooter, which has a driving range of 93 miles on a single charge. Read more in the press release below. Volkswagen is providing a 2015 e-Golf to Stanford University for research. The car will be used to study electric mobility, improvements in the driving experience and people's driving behavior and attitudes toward EVs. "Volkswagen's longstanding relationship with Stanford has allowed us to push the boundaries of automotive research and innovation," says Volkswagen's Ewald Goessmann, "and we look forward to extending our work together to drive advances in electric vehicles." Volkswagen's 261-mpg hand-built XL1 headed for Geneva
Thu, 21 Feb 2013After years of rumors, development and testing, the Volkswagen XL1 is finally about to become a reality. The project that began life as a daring 1-Liter concept car in 2002, will finally get its production-ready curtain call at the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks.
As soon as it hits the streets, the two-seat XL1 will instantly become the most fuel-efficient and most aerodynamic production car in the world. The car uses a plug-in hybrid system to achieve mind-blowing consumption of just 0.9 liters of diesel fuel consumed every 100 kilometers (and average of roughly 261 miles per gallon). Plus, the XL1 can go up to 50 kilometers on its battery power alone. Coefficient of drag is a miniscule 0.189, thanks to a tiny frontal area and an obviously slippery shape.
XL1 power comes from a two-cylinder diesel motor connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the 20 kW electric motor is fed by a lithium-ion battery. Both combine to give the XL1 performance figures that are, while not stirring, not shabby considering its extreme frugality: 0-62 miles per hour comes up in 12.7 seconds and top speed is nearly 146 mph.
New investor allows Suzuki to fend off VW
Tue, Aug 4 2015After years of legal wrangling, the long-soured partnership between Volkswagen and Suzuki looks finally to be coming out of arbitration, according to Bloomberg. As a sign of the Japanese brand's improved fortunes, hedge fund Third Point LLC recently bought an undisclosed stake in the company. The investor reported seeing a major opportunity in the successful Maruti Suzuki business in India. As an investment, the only major problem that Third Point found with Suzuki was its legal battle with VW. "The company's greatest asset is its low-cost manufacturing process for vehicles for the emerging market consumer," the fund said in a letter, according to Bloomberg. Third Point reportedly also wants a seat on Suzuki's board, despite being a minority shareholder. The alliance between Suzuki and VW goes back to late 2009. In the deal, the Japanese brand was meant to get access to cutting-edge tech, and the German firm got a helping hand towards better establishing itself in India and Southeast Asia. Things didn't go as planned, though. Less than two years later, Suzuki's boss publicly derided the deal. Eventually, the allegations started going back and forth, and the two have been working out a way to untangle practically ever since. Among the biggest issue has been how to get back the 19.9 percent stake that VW purchased. According to Bloomberg, the arbitration is now technically over. With the divorce nearly final, the two sides are just waiting on a decision on how to split things up. Suzuki may even just buy VW's stake to get the shares back.
