This listing is for a 1968 VW Beetle Convertible, though Pennsylvania has tagged it as a 1966.  The bug, or Hans, was originally purchased during the late 90's by myself and my brother.  We restored the car for our mother as a gift.  The engine and trans are the original though the years of muck has been removed during the rebuild process.  At this time we increased the displacement from the stock 1500 to a 1600 and as such the car can cruise at 70 mph if you run the gears correctly.  While the car was in our mother's possession it was a daily driver in Maryland going in and out of Baltimore reliably.

Han's look is the brainchild of my brother, a professional artist, who chose the so-cal two tone or Carolina Blue and and Off White  to show our love of growing up in North Carolina.  The top is a grey and the interior is that of a VW Bus in its cream and tan plaid design.  The carpets are camel colored and the original dash is black.  All glass on the car is original and many improvements have been made to enhance its cool appeal.  The front beam is adjustable and is currently locked down about an inch lower than a stock setup.  The tail lights are original 64 and down and the headlights are Porsche style.  The fenders on all corners are of the 1966 and if you noticed the blinkers are absent from the fenders as they are in the headlights.  The bumpers are also of the 64 and down series.

We recently replaced the original gas tank, as its seal finally went as well as the original transaxles with new German ones.  The rear main seal was replaced roughly two years ago.  The carb is a 34 Pict and has been recently rebuilt prior to the spring. Hans has two months worth of PA inspection left before a renewal is needed. The radio is not currently hooked up as we never felt the need to listen to a moron drowning out our lovely engine.

For the past 7 years this car has been driven as both a daily commuter and as a parade chaperone.  My kids love taking it to the local car gatherings as it gets more attention than most Corvettes as it is truly one of a kind.    In short we have put 8000 miles on Hans since rebuild and we have enjoyed our time with him.  If you are looking for a classic car that requires little attention beyond a light bulb burning out then Hans is for you.  We are currently looking for a new home for Hans with a garage as I have focused on finishing a 53 F100, my brother a custom Harley and our mom has no room in her new town home.

Please feel free to email me with any questions and I will get back to you as fast as possible.

2013 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet

Thu, 07 Mar 2013

The Golf VI's Last Hurrah Is Pure Niche
This was in the heart of the ultra-chic Côte d'Azur during winter. The car to be tested was the not-for-North America 2013 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet. Prevailing weather conditions here this time of year are bizarrely pleasant, as though a dome of Swarovski crystal has been placed over the entire region to protect it from any real winter spoiling things. And the zippy Golf R Cabriolet is a sports car designed precisely for this area's preciously narrow winding streets, as well as for the lofty budgets of its property owners.
So then why was it snowing like we were in northern Michigan? The weather front hit from the north like a swift kick to the Jordaches. The roof was open on this Candy White Golf R Cabrio and I, as is my wont, was determined through thick or thin to keep it retracted. It had been raining and sometimes sleeting like the End of Days, but I kept the lid cracked because the 261-horsepower cabrio - the most powerful convertible ever built by Volkswagen - was snipping along nicely as the bad weather blew over my head and wetted only the rear headrests.

Top Gear drag races VW Golf R against McLaren 675LT and Porsche 911

Thu, Apr 7 2016

Top Gear's latest quarter-mile drag race in the collects three very different performance vehicles: the 296-horsepower Volkswagen Golf R, 424-hp Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, and 666-hp McLaren 675LT. While each of these cars sit near the top of their segment, they each come from totally different rungs of the sports car price ladder. Spoiler alert, the Golf R doesn't win. But the final results illustrate the diminishing returns of price and performance. For example, the McLaren is only about a second quicker than the Porsche to 60 miles per hour, but the 675LT costs over 2.5 times more that the GTS. Related Video:

Average transaction prices climb to a record $36,270 in January

Sat, Feb 3 2018

The automotive sector made a hash of the numbers last month, a mess of pluses and minuses clogging the transaction-price charts according to Kelley Blue Book. The overall industry rose one percent, even though buyers bought fewer cars and light vehicles in January 2018 vs 2017 using the selling-day adjusted rate. Due to January transaction prices rising to $36,270, a record for January, the value of new vehicles sold climbed more than $1 billion compared to January 2017. KBB's transaction prices don't include customer incentives, which changes the complexion slightly; average incentive spending rose to just over ten percent. The average transaction price in December 2017 was $36,756, so January dropped a bit - nothing unexpected, with the month annually blamed for "January doldrums." More revealing is the fact that the average transaction price in January 2017 was $34,910. This year's plumped-up figure came courtesy of the continued shift to crossovers, SUVs, and light trucks, which shouldn't surprise anyone who's read an automotive blog in the past 20 years. That category comprised nearly 70 percent of new vehicle sales for the month. Some manufacturers profited more than others, though. Fiat Chrysler managed 12.8 percent fewer sales in January compared year-on-year, but the company's vehicles sold for $1,300 more. The Ford brand suffered a 6.3-percent dip in sales, but brand transaction prices increased $2,000, while a Lincoln sold for $8,700 more on average. General Motors sold more cars and sold them for more money; overall GM transaction prices rose four percent, or $1,270, while a GMC traded hands for seven-percent more than in January 2017 and a Cadillac got $2,300 more on average. Of KBB's listed automakers, the Volkswagen Group got the most of out its customers, transaction prices rising at the German automaker by 5.6 percent to $42,243 in January 2018 compared to a year earlier. American Honda followed with a 4.3-percent increase to $28,991, GM in third at 4.1 percent to $40,313. Find your next car at Autoblog using our new and used car listings or the Car Finder tool. Broken out by segment, minivans rocked the table, transaction prices leaping by 7.9 percent to $35,380 compared to January a year earlier. Luxury cars boasted the next-highest rise, at 3.6 percent to $58,533.
