1968 Bug With Rebuilt Engine, Flower Aluminum Wheels, Short Shifter, Lowered on 2040-cars

Year:1968 Mileage:51409
Location:

Grandview, Missouri, United States

Grandview, Missouri, United States

This is a great little VW Bug in the Kansas City area.  The pictures tell most of the story, but here's a little more about it that you can't see in the photos.

The car runs and drives great!  I posted a couple of videos so you can hear it run and see it drive.  Click the links below to check them out:

The engine was rebuilt about a year and a half ago with a new crank shaft, rods, clutch, etc.  The fuel tank was replaced at the same time.  I've only driven it about 720 miles since then.  The full receipts with date and mileage are in the photos.  Since then I have replaced the front suspension trailing arm bushings (red in the photos), wiper motor, transaxle shaft boots, and various other things.

The engine has '71-style dual-port heads and offset oil cooler, 009 distributor, and oil pressure and temperature sending units installed with matching VDO gauges in dash.  There is also a cylinder head temp gauge in the dash, but no sending unit installed.

This car has really quick acceleration, and can cruise at 70mph on the freeway.  It has a Gene Berg short-shifter installed.

The car is lowered with adjustable drop on the front beam (see photos) and 15 inch aluminum flower wheels with lower-profile tires.  The back tires have good tread, the front are pretty low.

Once while I was driving, the left rear wheel came off because the castle nut had not been torqued properly.  I could not find the wheel and had to replace it, which is why that one is black.

It started rusting pretty bad on the roof and around the body some, so I took the glass out and fenders off, thoroughly removed the rust, and painted the area with blue Rustoleum paint.  The rest of the body has some rust, but not too bad.  If you are not able to come look at it and would like more pictures, I can send you some.  E-bay limited the number I could put in the listing to 24.

In the process of fixing the body rust I removed much of the interior including the glove box, door panels, visors, etc.  I do have those parts and will include them of course.

While getting it inspected last year, the front trailing arm bushings were too loose, so I replaced those.  They are red in the photos of the front end.

Just a little while back I noticed a crack in the right rear trailing arm right under one of the three bolts that hold it to the drum housing, so that will probably need to be replaced.

All lights and electrical are working.

I have really enjoyed having this car and working on it, but with four small children now I do not have the time or money to properly restore it.  Hopefully someone out there does.

This care is being sold as-is.

If you have any questions or would like more pictures or to schedule a time to see the car please send me a message.

Local pick-up only, will meet at public location.

Payment by cash at time of pick up.

VW using other manufacturing locations as leverage in battle with TN [w/video]

Sat, 26 Apr 2014

We've reached a new step in the ongoing drama at Volkswagen's factory in Chattanooga, TN. The United Auto Workers recently dropped its opposition to the union vote and agreed that it wouldn't hold another ballot for at least a year. Now, the new question becomes where VW is going to build its forthcoming midsize SUV.
Earlier, it had been considered all but certain that the SUV, likely a production version of the CrossBlue concept (pictured above), would be built in Tennessee. However, it seems the Chattanooga factory might have competition to produce it. In emails obtained by The Detroit News, VW's lawyer wrote to the Tennessee economic development department in January saying, "While we understand there are some 'non-deal' issues that are causing a delay in the TN solution, VW has been successful in reaching agreement on terms at the alternative locations."
As previously reported, the state of Tennessee allegedly offered VW about $300 million in incentives to build the vehicle there and create an estimated 1,350 jobs, but it later rescinded the deal. Newly leaked documents from NewsChannel 5 (WTVF-TV) in Nashville allegedly show just how close that offer was to being completed. It appears that VW actually sent the government the first draft of a memorandum of understanding agreeing to the incentives, but the state removed the offer in late January.

VW to unveil diesel-electric Twin-Up! in Tokyo

Fri, 08 Nov 2013

We've received multiple reports that Volkswagen will be bringing a diesel-electric concept to the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, set to take place later this month. The car, called the Twin-Up!, is based on the Up! city car, with some sources claiming this is a thinly veiled concept that will eventually enter production.
According to Automotive News Europe, the Twin-Up! will reportedly return 214 miles per gallon on the US cycle by combining an 800-cc, two-cylinder diesel and an electric motor. It will also boast plug-in capabilities, and will be able to cover 30 miles on electric power alone.
Autocar has a more complete picture of the Twin-Up!'s powertrain, though, claiming it's a modified version of the hybrid system found in the Volkswagen XL1. The Twin-Up! will get a more potent, 47-horsepower electric motor to the XL1's 27-hp unit, but will retain that car's 47-hp turbodiesel. The battery pack will also grow, from 5.5 kilowatt hours to 8.6 kWh. Both of these increases are necessary due to the increased weight of the Twin-Up! - it's some 900 pounds heavier than an XL1.

VW Super Bowl teaser with Jimmy Cliff is like a less-mean Tosh.0 Web Redemption

Thu, 24 Jan 2013

Reggae super-duper-star and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jimmy Cliff has been using music to send positive vibes out into the universe for decades now, so its no surprise that his message on behalf of Volkswagen is one of redemption.
Dubbed Sunny Side, this web-spot is VW's warmup of sorts for what promises to be another blockbuster year in the world of Super Bowl commercials. Without giving away the game, the euphonious commercial sees Cliff opening his arms and his heart to some YouTube 'celebrities' that might see courser treatment from the likes of Tosh.0, for instance. We can't help but be reminded of Coca-Cola's legendary 1971 Hilltop spot with the "I'd like to buy the world a Coke" lyric, too.
Enjoy the pre-Super Bowl VW spot below, and don't forget to pay it forward... your karma will thank you. For those of you that just can't get enough of commercial-making magic, we've included a "making-of" video, as well.
