- For sale: my 1967 VW bug convertible.
- History of the car: I bought this bug from a girl in Los Angeles I went to high school with back in 1975. I'm the third owner. I don't know much about the car's history before I owned it. I drove the car for 7 years until about 1983 when I bought a 1934 Ford pick-up truck and restored it and put in a 350 chevy V-8 and then drove the '34 Ford all the time and this bug only on occasion. For a few years after I stopped driving this bug I started to restore it as time permitted. Then I got married in '89, traded the '34 Ford for a boat, my wife and I moved here to Florida & brought the bug with us...(Time flies, I can't believe it was 24 years ago).... We had a baby daughter a year or so after we got here & then there was never any time or extra cash for me to work on it so it's been stored high and dry inside my garage for the last 24yrs. Our daughter is now grown, doing well & out on her own, so about 2 or 3yrs ago I spent about $500 and bought a brand new set of nice chrome Brazilian made Mangels 15"-5 steel rims and a set of Brazilian 165/R15 Michelin ZX? "type" radials to be able to roll her around & maybe start to work on her. But unfortunately now the last couple years my beloved 94yr old mother back in Los Angeles now has beginning to mid stage Alzheimers, so I've been traveling back & forth to help her and I'm now going to move back to California to care for her. I'll have no time or the space to store and work on the Bug living in a condo or townhouse we'll be living in, there's no way for me to afford to buy a "real" house with a garage in LA, so I'm selling it. I know this doesn't have much to do describing the bug, just wanted to explain my situation & why I'm selling the car. I really hate to sell my convert. because I've had it such a long time and always wanted to restore her to a daily driver with a slightly built 1835cc motor, painted black with Dupont ChromaOne single stage paint, have a nice German Tan canvas top installed & drive her daily during the dry season.
- The floor pan is solid and has no rust out, but the support rails do have some rusted out areas which is very common with these convertibles after nearly 50yrs and need to be repaired or replaced. They could be probably be repaired with welded steel channel if your good at welding & not doing a total show car and just want a daily fun driver. If you plan on doing a full body off restore, then new replacement support rails are made for these cars and can be bought and replaced when the body is off. The heater channels seem to still be good, but I'm not sure. If your concerned about them, it would be best to come and see the car in person or have someone come to inspect them. This car originally had a factory installed VW of America gasoline powered "Insta-Heater" at one time in the trunk, but is not installed now and unfortunately I don't think have the heater anymore, but might be able to find it after I clean out my attic before I move and could send to you. I do have in one of the boxes of parts the orig adjustable round vent for the heater that fits the cut out under the glove box area. There's also an approx. 1.5" round hole cut out in the right front wheel well by the dealer for the exhaust pipe of the gasoline heater. Man, that heater was instantly HOT and you could roast a chicken maybe. The original owner lived in the Big Bear Ca. mountain area and ordered the extra gasoline heater as an option when she bought the car. This seems typical to me as most all women I've known are always feeling a little chilly. :-D You can see the extra knobs for it in the dash photo.
- All the original German VW glass is present and in good condition. All the windows roll up and down fine.****** The seats were all re-covered with NOS German seat covers 30yrs ago and are still in good shape, they are a bit dusty-dirty but the vinyl is still pretty soft ....the rear seat still has the original "horsehair" stuffing with the original small VW paper tags still under the seat springs. The front fenders & front hood are original '67 German made parts and the correct one year only parts. They came off a light blue bug that my old friend in high school had in his wrecking yard in Sun Valley, Ca. they're in excellent shape and were much nicer than what was on it. Rear fenders are also German made parts if I remember correctly, but not sure, as when I was driving and working on this car 30+ yrs ago, original German parts were still plentiful.
- It's a good candidate for a building a daily driver or a full restoration if you want to go that far. The doors and quarter panels as seen are red oxide primered & have some sanding guide coat from 30+ yrs ago when I started long board sanding them flat to get her ready for re-painting and the doors & sides are very nice and straight. So is the orig. engine deck lid, and as said the front hood and front fenders are in nice shape too. There's some small rust holes in the rear luggage compartment sheet metal located on the the horizontal flat part on the left side, but they're not too bad and should be an easy fix.
- I could send you more pics of this car if you call me, tell me what you want to see and give me and give me your email address.
- The one year only rear engine lid is complete with rain catcher and in very good shape. It was bead blasted to bare metal and primed many years ago. The convertible top window is the orig German VW glass and is also in excellent condition, the window frame is good also. The orig. black canvas boot cover for when top is down is included. The canvas of boot is a bit stiff, but might still be usable, you can see the cover under the rear window on rear seat in the pic of the top's window. The top's folding frame I was also going to have blasted then powder coated but never did. The wood parts for top were removed & marked where they go and I have them in boxes along with most of the other little parts. I don't have the rear bumper. I have 1 Hella back up light, the other one has been misplaced. There's no running boards. I have the orig oil bath air cleaner and many other parts & most all the unique '67 thin trim pieces etc. The shock absorbers on the car are vintage KONI shocks which were state of the art back then and seem to still be OK. If I remember correct, KONI shocks are fully re-buildable if the rebuild kits can still be found.
- The 1500cc engine is the original with an HO number. The transaxle is orig also. A NOS German front end bushing? kit is included, not that it really needs it, but I was going to rebuild front end and put disc brakes in front when I restored it. There's a bunch of headlight trim rings and many other small parts, also some German NOS little rubber seals for around the windows for the Conv. top. The front turn signals and rear light lenses are missing as seen.******* I think I'm starting the bidding at a fair price for this rare year Bug taking into consideration the support rails issue, other small issues and some missing small parts. They only made about 7,500 of these in 1967. I could probably easily get what I'm asking just for all the one year only parts if I was to part it out.... but I think the car is really too nice to part out. She just needs a new boyfriend now to take care of her and give her the TLC she deserves. There's many little parts, rear fender gravel guards, trim pieces etc plus the orig jack I've not taken pics of under front hood, but could email pics to you. The orig steel rims are not shown but are included also. The electrical wiring under hood is orig & intact and should work OK still as all was working when I stopped driving her. The engine is missing the coil. I have the orig. distributor but it's not installed. I was going to put a 009 on it but never got to it. The engine was running OK many years ago when I stopped driving it, but it's not been started in 24 years. The engine still turns over freely by hand. You could probably get the motor running again or just rebuild it back to stock, or a 1641 dual port or whatever you wish to do

Audi rumored to buy Alfa Romeo, officials deny it
Thu, 28 Mar 2013For more than two years, Volkswagen has been making public statements about its willingness to buy Alfa Romeo and quadruple the Italian brand's sales, and for just as long, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has replied with some version of "Mr. Piëch, drop it." According to a report in Ward's Auto, all that jousting might be over: it claims that sources close to both Marchionne and Audi CEO Rupert Stadler admit that the two are in talks for Audi to buy not just Alfa Romeo, but a production plant in Italy. In fact, a final deal could possibly include partsmaker Magnetti Marelli.
Against that backdrop, a report by German news weekly Stern quotes a Fiat spokesmen as saying it doesn't comment on rumors and an Audi rep has said flatly that "There is no substance in the news." If a sale is being arranged, the timing would seem to point to how eager Fiat is to raise cash to complete its major initiatives. Even though Alfa Romeo continues to delay its return to the US, it just showed off the production version of the 4C at the Geneva Motor Show (shown above) and said that preferred Fiat dealerships here would get them. Then there's Alfa's recently concluded deal with Mazda to develop a roadster based on the next generation MX-5 Miata - a deal that would seem to help both the Italian and Japanese brands.
The monetary issues are troublesome, though. Fiat is taking a beating in the European market and its weak-kneed balance sheet is delaying gotta-have-it products like the Jeep Cherokee. Fiat has been talking to banks about getting money to buy the rest of Chrysler and those financial institutions have also raised issues about debt and cash reserves, and the nasty game of chess Fiat is playing with the United Auto Workers (and now the court system about the portion of Chrysler it doesn't own) could end up blowing another hole in Marchionne's plans. It is possible that this could finally have convinced Fiat to at least see how serious Audi's parent company, Volkswagen, is about buying Alfa Romeo. Or it could be just another rumor.
European jury picks finalists for 2015 Car of the Year
Tue, Dec 16 2014There are countless Car of the Year awards handed out each year, and naturally, Europe has its own way of doing things. Every year, a panel of jurists representing seven publications in seven different languages and seven different countries get together to name their joint Car of the Year. The panel released a list of 32 candidates back in July, and it has now whittled that list down to seven nominees. The list consists of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, the Citroen C4 Cactus (shown), the Ford Mondeo, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Nissan Qashqai, the Renault Twingo and the Volkswagen Passat. Of those seven, only two are available in the US – those being the Mondeo (sold Stateside as the Fusion) and the C-Class. The Passat is an entirely different model in North America, the Qashqai isn't offered here, Citroen and Renault don't even participate in our market and the BMW 2 Series is represented here only by the completely different coupe and convertible. Expect the one and only recipient of the 2015 Car of the Year award to be announced at the Geneva Motor Show this coming March, and while you're waiting, you can place your guesses for the eventual winner in Comments.
