1967 VW Beetle...great little car...rated 33 MPG...engine re-built 5,000 miles ago...starts immediately and idles perfect...no smoke, no oil leaks...this car was partially restored when I bought it, then I added many more new parts within the past year...new brakes including all 4 wheel cylinders and Parking Brake, 5 new tires including spare, new generator brushes, new triple plated chrome bumpers front and back, new muffler and "pea shooter" exhaust pipes...This was the first year for 12 Volt system...the clutch and transmission are perfect...original steering wheel looks great...dash chrome trim and paint are awesome...all lights, cigarette lighter, gas guage, speedometer, odometer, wipers, horn, heater, defroster work perfectly...original AM Push Button radio works great and lights up too...also has a Sony AM/FM CD Player hidden in a black leather covered removable console that fits over the gear shift knob, just plug in power cable and play...amplifier is hidden under back seat..."Flamingo" interior is relatively new, just some minor wear...has pop-out rear windows...back-up lights...the back seat backrest lays down making a large storage space...most of the headliner looks great but it has some water damage near rear window from before the new window gasket was installed, now water tight...new Sun Visors and trim around doors, etc...new carpet front and back and in trunk...front fenders are from an earlier model but all was painted at the same time...you can drive this car every day, as far as you want to go...body has a couple tiny dings but not really noticeable...no major rust, just a little surface stuff, easily cleaned up...has chrome wheels that will show little rust freckles when the wax fades...re-wax and they look great...it's not perfect, but well on it's way to being completely restored...if it were done, the price would be more like $13,000-15,000...you can enjoy driving it just as it sits, then add some of the small details needed to finish it when you can, like window channel rubber/felt trim, a new washer bottle for the wiper/washer system, 4-way flasher, the doors lock but the key is having trouble popping it up from the outside door handle, headlights need to be cleaned up on the inside...not much else needed that I know of...I will help with getting it loaded onto a transport and meet the driver... From Wikipedia: The Beetle changes for the 1967 model included a larger-displacement engine for the second year in a row. Horsepower had been increased to 37 kW (50 hp) the previous year, and for 1967 it was increased to 53 PS (39 kW) at 4,200 rpm. Torque is 10.8 kg·m (106 N·m; 78 lb·ft) at 2,000 rpm, bore 83 mm, stroke 69 mm, and it has a compression ratio of 7.5:1. The 1200 and 1300 engines continued to be available in the updated bodyshell, as many markets based their taxation on engine size. On US, UK, and Ireland models, the generator output was increased from 180 to 360 watts, and upgraded from a 6-volt to a 12-volt system. The clutch disc also increased in size, and changes were made to the flywheel, braking system, and rear axle. New standard equipment included two-speed windscreen wipers, reversing lights, a driver's armrest on the door, locking buttons on the doors, and a passenger's side exterior mirror. The 1967 model weighed 840 kg (1,850 lb)

Car Club USA: CleanMPG Northwest Rally
Tue, May 19 2015Car Club USA heads to Los Angeles for the CleanMPG Northwest Rally, where a group of like-minded hypermiling enthusiasts led by Wayne Gerdes attempts to drive from Los Angeles, CA, to Bend, OR, on one tank of fuel. For this challenge, Wayne tapped some of the most accomplished hypermilers in the world, including Guinness World Record holder Bob Winger and Mike Sefton, "the most fuel efficient driver in all of Canada." It doesn't take long for the competition to get heated. "They're not aggressive enough, and it's not going to save them anything by being soft right now," says Gerdes as the group attempts to navigate the Interstate traffic. "Driving in Los Angeles is a hyper miler's nightmare," says Winger. The trip will challenge both car and driver, while putting the latest fuel-efficient tech to the test. Wayne is piloting the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen TDI, Sefton drives the Audi A3 TDI, and Winger attempts the trek in a Honda Accord Hybrid. It's diesel versus hybrid tech on this fuel-efficient trip of a lifetime. Each Car Club USA episode features a different car club or event from across the US, where passionate owner communities gather to share automotive experiences and embark on incredible adventures. From Main Street cruises to off-road trails, catch all the latest car club activity on Autoblog. Fully Charged rolls into season 3 with VW XL1 and electric Land Rover
Sat, Jan 18 2014It's been some time since last we visited with British actor and electric car proponent Robert Llewellyn and his web-based video series, Fully Charged. The show, now sponsored by Ecotricity, has started rolling out its third season and now has available two episodes featuring a pair of truly unique – and diametrically opposed – vehicles. The first installment starts with some interesting numbers involving the host's Nissan Leaf and its energy consumption over the past 36,000 miles, but soon moves on to the ultra-aero, ultra-expensive Volkswagen XL1. Now, if you've already seen the footage from our own XL1 first drive review, there's not a lot new here except, perhaps, more enthusiasm and a better listen of the two-cylinder diesel kicking in. Still, it's a great reminder of a truly unique vehicle and we enjoyed the segment. The second episode features an electrified Land Rover Defender 110. This is a vehicle you'd more likely see on an African safari than at the local mall. It's not a home-built conversion either, but rather, something the company has put together "for the boffins to create the ideas and see if they work." Boasting a 50-mile range, it's certainly something we like to take on an off-road adventure. Llewellyn is given the chance to do just that, and though the course is somewhat milder than what we might attempt, it does feature a stretch of river and some rough, rutted tracks. You can watch both episodes by scrolling below let us know which vehicle you'd prefer in the comments. This writer is going with the four-wheel-drive. This content is hosted by a third party. 2013 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet
Thu, 07 Mar 2013The Golf VI's Last Hurrah Is Pure Niche
This was in the heart of the ultra-chic Côte d'Azur during winter. The car to be tested was the not-for-North America 2013 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet. Prevailing weather conditions here this time of year are bizarrely pleasant, as though a dome of Swarovski crystal has been placed over the entire region to protect it from any real winter spoiling things. And the zippy Golf R Cabriolet is a sports car designed precisely for this area's preciously narrow winding streets, as well as for the lofty budgets of its property owners.
So then why was it snowing like we were in northern Michigan? The weather front hit from the north like a swift kick to the Jordaches. The roof was open on this Candy White Golf R Cabrio and I, as is my wont, was determined through thick or thin to keep it retracted. It had been raining and sometimes sleeting like the End of Days, but I kept the lid cracked because the 261-horsepower cabrio - the most powerful convertible ever built by Volkswagen - was snipping along nicely as the bad weather blew over my head and wetted only the rear headrests.
