1965 Deluxe US Spec Hardtop bug

The incredibly good parts of this car:
One owner car prior to me and I have the original pink slip from 1965.
44,300 documented original miles. Documented by service stickers and DMV registration tags that show dates and mileage.
Last registration stickers are 1991. No current registration and car is sold with the original title and bill of sale only.
98% original L87 Pearl White Paint with #87 Mesh Red Interior.
100% original almost-mint condition interior. This is by far the nicest original interior I have ever seen.
The Mesh Red upholstery is mint with no wear and tear and no splitting seams.
Mint original sunvisors, interior mirror, headliner, rubber floor mats, battery cover, tarboards, carpet kit, and door panels. Some of these pieces look NOS and just installed but have been on the car since new.
Gearshift and e-brake handle in original L469 Anthracite paint.
Original rims are a date coded matched set to the car in original two tone paint L41 Black and L87 Pearl white.
Spare rim and tire is original and in un-restored condition.
Both original black and yellow California license plates.
Two "Carl Carleson - San Francisco" license plate frames where this bug was purchased from. Rear frame is original to the car. I replaced the broken front one with a spare that I had.
Engine #9522318 is dated correctly and it appears to have never been removed from the car. I'm assuming this because of the low miles but cannot 100% guarantee it without the Birth Certificate.
Original tool kit to match the Mesh Red interior.
Original 12/64 owners manual that came with the car since new.
Original luggage strap that mounts to the back of the rear seat.
100% of the glass is correct and original to the car.
The door windows roll up and down like a new car.
Hubcaps are original to the car and are in extremely nice shape.
Original jack, wiring cover and cardboard liner are in very nice shape.
Original matching red Wolfsburg logo'd seatbelts.
Original brown running board mats.
Original VW 101 drivers side mirror with Tinted Glass. Very cool original mirror.

See the pictures of under the wiring cover. Fuse box, speedo, switches, all look NOS but they are all original and perfect just the way it is supposed to be!!

Since the car had been in long term storage it needed a few things to make it running and driving: New master cylinder, soft lines, and wheel cylinders were installed. Gas tank flushed and cleaned, fuel line inside tunnel flushed and cleaned, and the carb and fuel pump disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled. This car starts on the first crank and then stops on a dime to pick it up. And new 6v battery that fits under the original metal battery cover.

Steering is amazing and the car still drives like it was brand new.

There is the typical road grime under the car and it could use a good cleaning. Inside of the fender wells are dirty but the new owner can spend the time to fully detail this area.

Parts that make this car not 100% perfect:
The left edge of the drivers side of the rubber mat is slightly worn and cracking from age.
Carpet around the heater channel on the drivers side is worn and the original owner put duct tape on it to protect......
Due to a minor accident in it's past; part of the drivers rear fender and bumper mount and surrounding area had to be repaired and repainted. It was metal finished inside and out and paint blended to match the original. It's very difficult to see any work was ever done except that it's cleaner than the other inner fenders.
These are some small dents and dings around the car that give it some character. There has been prior touch ups around the rain gutter edges.
When the fender was repaired the rear bumper was changed for a much cleaner original VW stamped one. So, while it's not original to the car, it's an original German one.

Car is available for international shipping if needed.

I take cash or bank wire transfers only. No Paypal, no personal checks, nothing else.........

Thanks for looking.

Dave

Tesla tires turning on Stretchla Vanagon EV conversion project

Tue, Jan 7 2014

It is one thing to say you are going to Frankenstein a Tesla Model S with a pair of Siamese-twinned Volkswagen Vanagons and quite another to actually start taking your newly-acquired, smashed-up electric sedan apart in an effort to bring it back to life. Otmar Ebenhoech is doing just that, and having no small successes along the way. The Stretchla project, as it is being called, has officially started and our protagonist has put together another bit of video to document his progress and let us know about some of the different challenges he's encountered and conquered. While our original post about this endeavor featured video of the stretched Vanagon's drivetrain removal, this latest installment focuses on the Model S. Otmar received the Tesla in less-than-operable condition. Otmar received the Tesla in less-than-operable condition and has been tackling some of the basic problems one might expect to encounter: lots of error messages and an electrically disconnected battery pack. Without the aid of a manual or technical diagrams, he's removed the battery pack and discovered why it wasn't sending power to the car. Scroll below to watch the ten-minute presentation and celebrate some initial victories. You can also check out the official Stretchla blog for more photos and updates, including the most recent one that discusses how he talked himself into paying (*spoiler alert) $42,000 for a wrecked, non-functional electric car, along with more recent struggles with the steering rack. Hit us up in the comments to let us know what kind of trouble you would get into with a Model S drivetrain of your own. This content is hosted by a third party. Next VW GTI to get 10-speed dual-clutch gearbox

Wed, Nov 26 2014

Following on Volkswagen's official announcement that it was working on a ten-speed, dual-clutch transmission, Auto Express has it on "good authority" that the new transmission will end up in the next GTI, GTD and Golf R. The brand's current seven-speed will be retained for lesser eight-generation Golfs. While the new gearbox won't be limited to just the higher-end Golf range, the new hatchback, expected in 2017, will be the first to get it, Auto Express reports. The new DSG is the same size as the Volkswagen Group's seven-speed dual-clutch, and will easily fit into VAG's MQB platform, so we should expect it to filter into the rest of the Group's vehicles, much like the seven-speed 'box has. The ten-speed is likely to see applications beyond even the small cars of the MQB platform. The gearbox can handle 405 pound-feet of torque, according to AE, making its application in larger offerings such as the gas-powered MLB cars and crossovers a likelihood. Beyond the new gearbox, Volkswagen is also toying with mild-hybrid tech for the standard Golf and better batteries for the e-Golf. As we said, expect the new Golf to arrive in European markets in 2017, with the current Euro-market Golf getting updated next year. As for the US, we wouldn't be surprised if VW followed the trail blazed by the Mark 7, with a North American arrival for the eight-gem Golf slated for a year or so after sales in Europe begin.

Fully Charged rolls into season 3 with VW XL1 and electric Land Rover

Sat, Jan 18 2014

It's been some time since last we visited with British actor and electric car proponent Robert Llewellyn and his web-based video series, Fully Charged. The show, now sponsored by Ecotricity, has started rolling out its third season and now has available two episodes featuring a pair of truly unique – and diametrically opposed – vehicles. The first installment starts with some interesting numbers involving the host's Nissan Leaf and its energy consumption over the past 36,000 miles, but soon moves on to the ultra-aero, ultra-expensive Volkswagen XL1. Now, if you've already seen the footage from our own XL1 first drive review, there's not a lot new here except, perhaps, more enthusiasm and a better listen of the two-cylinder diesel kicking in. Still, it's a great reminder of a truly unique vehicle and we enjoyed the segment. The second episode features an electrified Land Rover Defender 110. This is a vehicle you'd more likely see on an African safari than at the local mall. It's not a home-built conversion either, but rather, something the company has put together "for the boffins to create the ideas and see if they work." Boasting a 50-mile range, it's certainly something we like to take on an off-road adventure. Llewellyn is given the chance to do just that, and though the course is somewhat milder than what we might attempt, it does feature a stretch of river and some rough, rutted tracks. You can watch both episodes by scrolling below let us know which vehicle you'd prefer in the comments. This writer is going with the four-wheel-drive. This content is hosted by a third party.
