Paint has some wear, but consistent with age. Has a few chips, scratches, blemishes, but no dents. I have lost one of the windshield wiper arms. Interior redone and in good condition. Tires have been driven on less than 5,000 miles. Bumpers have not been re-chromed, but are originals and very straight. Converted to 12 volt. Radio is original, but not hooked up. Battery box does have a 3 mm hole in the back corner. The paint around the brake reservoir in the front trunk has popped up due to the brake fluid over the years."

Up for auction is my 1962 Volkswagen beetle.  I have owned this Beetle for just over three years, and driven it approximately 3,500 miles. I purchased it in California and had it shipped to Wisconsin.  Prior to my ownership, it had been a California car its whole life.  While it has been in Wisconsin, it has been stored in a heated garage in the winters (October - April).  The body on my Beetle is very good for a 51 year old car.  When I purchased it, the mileage was just over 45,000 miles, which the owner stated were original.  I do not have a cert or docs for this, but over the years, while doing routine maintenance, do believe the low mileage may be original.  I rebuilt the rear brakes and axle seals last year, and the rear drums are original stamped VW, and still have a lot of surface.  The rear bearings were original as well.  The brake pedal is in great condition, as were the rubber pads (I cracked the brake pedal cover pulling it off to take a look,...very frustrating).  I have had to replace some of the rubber seals around the lights, but saved the original rubber items, as they were all original VW.  A few items have been updated for safety: converted from 6V to 12V for brighter lights, and the addition of seat belts for my passengers/children.

I have reviewed the VIN and motor numbers and my Beetle was manufactured in the late fall (Oct/Nov) of 1961, and then shipped over.

Mechanicals:
Motor was rebuilt less than 7,500 miles ago (I do not have the receipts).  The block is the original 62.
Rear brakes were rebuilt last year (pads/hardware)
New rear axle seal
New plugs, wires, dist. cap, ignition rotor.  Timing and point gap set as well.
Oil change
New Bosch Alternator and belt.
Battery replaced three years ago

Recommend:  Front brakes can get a little grumbly after sitting, but smooth out after a couple miles.  It will need another oil bath air filter, as I put a small hair line crack in the current/original (very frustrating).  The current one may be repaired, but weeps a little.

Interior:
Seats recovered in original color
Door panels replaced in original color (rear interior panels have separated a little towards the bottoms, this can be seen in one of the pics)
Headliner replaced and has no tears
Pillar covers have a little rash from the rear seat being moved for battery access
Carpet and rubber mat in great shape
Battery tray has a 3mm hole in the corner, I did not replace it as it does not make sense to (it is only original once).
Trunk has some light surface oxidation,
Radio is an original Sapphire, but is not hooked up and I don't know if it works
Windshield has been replaced, all other glass is original

Exterior:
Very solid body all around and also the pan (California car).
Respray many years ago.  There are some scratches and chips, that said the body is straight.
Window rubber replaced.  The driver/passenger window scrapes/vent window rubber is not a great fit, and I would replace in the future
I have misplaced one of the windshield wipers.  I took them off, as I don't drive in the rain
Bumpers are the originals, and a little dull, but very straight
Bumper brackets recently powder coated
Rims in original colors (few chips on the lip, see pics)
Luggage rack comes with the car
Original running boards
Driver/Passenger door seals are original and a little tired.
Original Wolfsburg emblem on the hood

Other Items:
The original jack, tool kit and spare tire are in the car.
I will include the Muir Repair Manual pictured as well, this is a great book.
The heater boxes are intact and in good condition.  I do not have the cable hooked up, don't need the heat, not driven in winter.
Hubcaps have some pitting
Trim around vent windows has some pitting.
The paint in front trunk by the brake reservoir has "popped" due to brake fluid (see pic), I left this area alone as it is common, and I didn't want to repaint it.  I believe it is referred to as "patina".
When the electric was converted to 12V, a new alternator stand, carb. spacer and filler neck spacer were installed to complete the switch (this is typical, and can be all switched back if desired)
An aftermarket degree pulley was added to help with timing, adjusting valves, etc. This could be switched back as well.

In summary, this is a nice 51 year old Volkswagen that has not been molested and with nice original parts.  It is not perfect, but it sure is beautiful, and will get a lot of attention and thumbs up.  It is a conversation piece and really gets people reminiscing about their youth.  I am not selling it as a restored car or garage queen, but more of a well taken care of example.  If you were looking for a car that would take little to make perfect, this is a good example.  Due to the age of my car, I am having to sell it with no warranties,..expressed, implied or otherwise.  I would however myself, not hesitate to take it on a road-trip at 55 mph all day long.

Volkswagen adding R-Line trim to Touareg, Tiguan for 2014

Fri, 11 Jan 2013

Volkswagen introduced its aggressive R-Line appearance package on the CC and Beetle last year, but later this year, this treatment will also be applied to VW's crossovers, the Tiguan and Touareg. Both sporty-looking utility vehicles will be unveiled next week at the Detroit Auto Show.
The 2014 Tiguan R-Line comes standard with bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights, and the package adds 19-inch wheels, grey fender extensions, body-color side skirts and a liftgate spoiler. Inside, the R-Line adds a flat-bottom sport steering wheel with paddle shifters, a black headliner and numerous metallic trim accents such as the stainless scuff plates, the aluminum pedals and metallic finish on the instrument and door panels. The Tiguan R-Line will be offered in front- and all-wheel drive configurations.
As for the 2014 Touareg R-Line (shown above), this model gets an ever more distinctive look with an aggressive front fascia, 20-inch wheels and dual oval-shaped exhaust outlets in addition to the painted side skirts and LED taillights. Similar metallic interior trim pieces found inside the Tiguan R-Line will also make their way into the Touareg as well as gloss black accents on the instrument panel and center stack.

Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Mercedes also under diesel emissions scrutiny

Sat, Oct 10 2015

The controversy over Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal isn't limited to the US. In Europe, where diesel engines are far more popular, the issue is shining a harsh light on the NEDC emissions test. As already known, the evaluation does a poor job of reflecting real-world production of NOx, and it appears a significant number of automakers are affected. The Guardian in the UK has been reporting on real-world test results from a company called Emissions Analytics. After the latest round of checks, vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi were found to generate far more NOx than they should. The newspaper also published similar results for Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Fiat, Volvo, Jeep, Citroen, VW, and Audi. On average, the figures are about four times over the limit of producing the pollutant. Unlike VW and its defeat device, these automakers aren't actually breaking the rules. The vehicles perform up to the NEDC lab test for emissions, but those results simply aren't translated to the street. "The VW issue in the US was purely the trigger which threw light on a slightly different problem in the EU - widespread legal over-emissions," Nick Molden from Emissions Analytics said to The Guardian. A big fight to decide the future of this issue appears to be on the horizon. Automakers claim that they can't meet the next round of tightening emissions regulations and are asking for compromises. Although, spokespeople for Mercedes and Honda told The Guardian that the brands would be in favor of the stricter rules. Meanwhile, some European governments began backtracking their support of diesels well before this scandal came to light. The added scrutiny certain hasn't helped the future of the oil-burner. VW using other manufacturing locations as leverage in battle with TN [w/video]

Sat, 26 Apr 2014

We've reached a new step in the ongoing drama at Volkswagen's factory in Chattanooga, TN. The United Auto Workers recently dropped its opposition to the union vote and agreed that it wouldn't hold another ballot for at least a year. Now, the new question becomes where VW is going to build its forthcoming midsize SUV.
Earlier, it had been considered all but certain that the SUV, likely a production version of the CrossBlue concept (pictured above), would be built in Tennessee. However, it seems the Chattanooga factory might have competition to produce it. In emails obtained by The Detroit News, VW's lawyer wrote to the Tennessee economic development department in January saying, "While we understand there are some 'non-deal' issues that are causing a delay in the TN solution, VW has been successful in reaching agreement on terms at the alternative locations."
As previously reported, the state of Tennessee allegedly offered VW about $300 million in incentives to build the vehicle there and create an estimated 1,350 jobs, but it later rescinded the deal. Newly leaked documents from NewsChannel 5 (WTVF-TV) in Nashville allegedly show just how close that offer was to being completed. It appears that VW actually sent the government the first draft of a memorandum of understanding agreeing to the incentives, but the state removed the offer in late January.
