Gorgeous, 3-owner Scirocco With 16v Techtonics 2.0l, Euro Bumpers And Headlights on 2040-cars
Middleburgh, New York, United States
1985 8v Scirocco with Techtonics 2.0 16v engine installed in mid-90s. Three-owner car. We've babied and cherished it since June 1990.
--Complete maintenance records since 1990 --New tires (see photos): Yokohama S-drive 195/50R-15 --BBS 15-inch wheels --Euro bumpers and headlights --16v body kit, with EXTRA body kit --Techtonics exhaust --Bilstein shocks with Neuspeed lowering springs --There is no AC, because it was originally an 8v. --The cruise control mechanism was disconnected when we did the engine swap in the mid'90s. --The odo has stopped working periodically. It comes and goes, which seems to be a common problem with these cars. --Engine is a 2.0-L 16v from Techtonics and had a new Audi block. It is stamped as such. There were no modifications. The engine has never been dyno'd. --You may notice the FL plates. It's only registered in FL. It's in Middleburgh, ny now. We have a home in FL, and trailered it down one year when we spent more time there, then trailered it back the same year. We like driving it on the mountain roads in NY much better than Florida's flats ;) --All mounts were replaced in the engine conversion, as well as a new (16v) radiator. There was no need to replace computer, and all wiring is the same. The car is a true survivor. There is no rust. Hasn't been driven in winter, and it's been garaged most of its life. The clutch was replaced when we dropped in the 2.0L engine, in the mid-90s. It did not need replacing, but we figured we might as well replace it with the engine out. The transmission is original and unopened. We have not even replaced the original shift bushings, no need to. A few dings and scratches (see photos). Paint is in beautiful shape. Small burn on backseat from previous owner (see photo). (We are not smokers and car does NOT smell like smoke.) Cloth interior of the sunroof has some staining from inside sunroof (see photo). Everything works. It's still a blast to drive, and we're sad to see her go, but need to downsize our car collection. |

VW, Fiat, Mercedes could be CNG winners in Europe
Fri, Dec 12 2014Fiat ads in the US try to play up the exotic, sexy side of Italian culture. On the home front in Italy, however, passenger-vehicle sales are marked by something less edgy and quite a bit more practical: the growth of compressed-natural-gas (CNG) powered car sales. In fact, Italy is leading a group of European countries where CNG sales are on the upswing and may be benefiting automakers like VW, Fiat and Mercedes-Benz, according to Automotive News. VW started sales of its Golf TGI natural-gas vehicle this year – the company's fourth in Europe – while Mercedes-Benz added a natural-gas B-class model. Fiat accounts for about 50 percent of CNG vehicles sold on the continent. In all, Europe's CNG sales through September totaled about 67,000, up seven percent from a year earlier, Automotive News Europe says, citing research firm JATO Dynamics. And the number of CNG vehicles on Europe's roads could jump tenfold within the next decade. The draw is a combination of lower refueling prices and a CNG drivetrain that typically emits less CO2 than diesel vehicles. As for Italy, about five percent of new-vehicle sales are CNG. To put that into perspective, hybrids, battery-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and diesels combined to account for about 4.2 percent of US vehicle sales last year. Regulators consider adding more carmakers to Takata recall
Tue, Sep 29 2015Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal has been getting a lot of press recently, but the Takata airbag inflator affair could be grabbing headlines again soon. According to Bloomberg, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is contemplating an expansion to the campaign that could add seven automakers to the 12 already affected. They are Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Spartan Motors, Suzuki, Tesla, Volvo Trucks, and VW Group. To be clear, there's no recall for any of these automakers, yet. The government is simply asking for a full list of vehicles that each of them have with Takata-supplied inflators containing ammonium nitrate propellant. The agency is concerned this substance could play a roll in the ruptures. "NHTSA is considering not only whether to issue an administrative order that would coordinate the remedy programs associated with the current Takata recalls, but also whether such an order should include expansion of the current recalls," the letters say. All seven can be viewed, here. From a report supplied by Takata, the government already knows that the company supplied 887,055 inflators with ammonium-nitrate propellant to VW and 184,926 of them to Tesla. In an incident during the summer, a side airbag allegedly burst in a 2015 VW Tiguan. In early September, NHTSA put out a revised report that there were 23.4 million inflators to be replaced in 19.2 million vehicles in the US. An earlier accounting from the agency had about 34 million of the parts in 30 million cars. High humidity is still believed to be among the biggest risk factors for the ruptures. Although, if ammonium nitrate also gets the blame, some already recalled models might need to be repaired again. Related Video:
VW midsize crossover production headed for Chattanooga
Fri, 10 Jan 2014Potential labor woes aside, it looks like Volkswagen's Chattanooga, TN factory must have done something that impressed the bosses in Germany, because it sounds like the three-year-old factory is set to score a second model.
The factory currently builds the Passat, and has been in the running alongside VW's Puebla, Mexico factory to build a new crossover vehicle, likely based on the CrossBlue Concept. According to Bloomberg, a pair of unnamed sources have confirmed that Chattanooga is the favorite ahead of an official announcement.
When last we heard about the CrossBlue Concept, word was that a production decision had been delayed over concerns about the three-row CUV's business case. That August 2013 story claimed that a decision regarding the CrossBlue would be pushed back until early in 2014, which means we're ripe for some sort of news, whether good or bad.
