1973 VW Thing ..Good solid daily driver

Quick History ,An Older gentleman I know has had this car since 1983.Ive been after him to sell me this car for years .I finally got it about two years ago with plans to build a good dependable daily driver.Ive since purchased an all electric car and don't drive it and its the LAST of my vw collection.I want it to go to a nice home.

CONDITION

Ill start by saying this is not a show car .. ..What it is ,is a good solid ,dependable driver. When I bought it I went through the brakes an replaced the shoes and slave cylinders The brakes are great.I had my mechanic go through the engine ,basically new pistons and cylinders as well as fuel pump, carb, fuel lines ,plugs, wires, points .It has a new battery. The car runs great .Its not super fast or anything but ive driven it on 100 degree days and its never overheated or acted funny.I have once or twice had a hard time starting it once hot ..but that's a vw for ya.Oh yeah ..the engine is a 1600 bug engine .it does not have the skid plate (although I have it and you will get it with the purchase) .Nor does it have factory Thing exaust.Whats on it works well though.

OK the body. The floor is in OK condition .in the past someone made a patch for the battery tray and its working ,there are some cracks in the floor that have been brazed up.but it is the OG floor and needs nothing to carry on.All the doors are OK and work fine. One of them has some wonky bends around the inside edge(drivers rear).(I have a replacement white door for this one,I just didn't take any pics of it) .There is no rust in the body at all.the engine compartment is solid as well .fenders look good as does the windshield frame .the hood does have a small dent from of all things a squirrel falling out of a tree onto it.Now ...the top, top, frame, bow are all new (least a year old anyway) and are from the Thing Shop.No Top can compare to their quality and it shows.Car also has Glass Sliding Windows ,These are absolutely THE BEST windows and Ive had them on every thing Ive ever Owned .They were not cheap at all..But trust me if you ever have a set you will never go back to the plastic ones.

The wheels and Tires are also less than a year old. They are 17 inch and the tires have less than 500 total miles on them. The car has been lowered a tad by adjusters and could really use some new shocks. The rear bumper is fine ,needing a blast and pain job.the front one I did bump into my wifes car and bent it a tad.(see pic) fully repairable I just haven't gotten around to it .

The gas heater was working last winter .It stopped toward the end of the season and I do know whats wrong with it .With purchase of the car you will get a spare heater(not pictured) a good and tested pump and some new line to run to the heater as well as the tee.(its disconnected as of this moment)

Other electrical components

The car has NO radio,The head lights and taillights work fine .the turn signals work sometimes.I do have a brand new turn signal as well as a new wiper switch that you will get in the purchase.(not pictured)The wiper motor and wipers are not on the car but you will get all that stuff. The car was in boxes when I bought it and I don't drive it in rain so just never got around to installing it .

AUCTION REQUIREMENTS

There will be a $150.00 Non Refundable deposit required by paypal within 24 hrs of winning the bid.I Know that pictures can be hard to determine actual conditions of cars so if you come to view the car and decide you don't want it ..well no harm no foul ,but you will not get back the 150 as that will go to my costs in selling them online.I ask that the cars be paid in full (remaining balance less the $150.00 deposit)within 10 days of purchase in CASH only .I will not accept a check of ANYKIND.I can help with reasonable delivery for a fee

SUMMARY

This car is really a great car for restoration. The body is great and with a paint job would be awesome. It runs fine and was built to be a dependable driver ,The top ,top frame ,and GLASS windows are new. They could use a good bleach cleaning due to sitting outside from under trees ,The latches work fine. The seats have new covers over them but the horse padding is shot out ..ie .it needs new pads. There is an EMPI gt steering wheel in the car but not the correct horn button.I think I have the factory wheel and you will get that too.I have a spare for it around here somewhere as well .but I don't have the original jack.So.You will get the car,one rear drivers side door, all the wiper parts ,the dash pads (in good shape) as well as one extra one The carring bags for the Glass window,a spare gas heater  ,a spare 181 late model vw steering wheel ,NO TITLE for the car ,bill of sale only ,If you live in Alabama ill give you my 1973 tag that's on it .Im sure I missed something so shoot me a message with any questions.Car can be driven home !!Fuel gauge works ..lol.All in All a Good lil thing, I have over 10g in it as of right now ..The glass windows alone ...well go to thing shop .com and check em out youll see.

The best cars we drove this year

Tue, Dec 30 2014

Six hundred and fifty. That's roughly how many cars pass through the hands of Autoblog editors every year, from the vehicles we test here at home, to the cars we drive on new product launches, testing roundups, long-term cars, and so on. Of course, our individual numbers vary due to several reasons, but at the end of the day, our team's repertoire of automotive experience is indeed vast. But let's be honest, some cars certainly stand out more than others. So as the year's about to turn, and as we're readying brand-new daily cat calendars for our cubicles, our editors are all taking time to reflect on the machinery that made this year so special, with one simple, open-ended question as the guide – a question that we're asked quite frequently, from friends, family, colleagues, and more. "What's the best car you drove this year?" Lamborghini Huracan When I review the list of everything I drove in 2014, picking an absolute favorite becomes almost impossible. I mean, how does one delineate between the joy offered by cars as different as the Alfa Romeo 4C, Volkswagen Golf R, Mercedes-AMG GT S and even the humble-yet-wonderful Chevy Colorado? Okay fine, I'll just pick the Lamborghini. I drove the Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4 on a racetrack, in the mountains, and along southern coast of Spain. It felt like the king of the car jungle in all of those places, sucking the eyeballs of observers nearly out of their heads as it drove by, and almost melting my brain with its cocktail of speed and grip and intense communication. It feels a little easy to say that the one new supercar I drove this year was also my favorite, but the fact is that the Huracan is one of the finest cars I've driven during my career, let alone 2014. Judge me if you must. – Seyth Miersma Senior Editor Rolls-Royce Wraith There are a couple of ways to look at the question, "What's the best car you drove this year?" In terms of what was so good I'd go out and buy one tomorrow, that'd be my all-time sweetheart, the Volkswagen GTI. Or if I'm just talking about sheer cool-factor, maybe something like the Galpin GTR1, BMW i8, or Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG. But instead, I'm going to write about the sheer opulence of being the best of the best. The hand-crafted, holier-than-thou, shut-your-mouth-when-I'm-talking-to-you supremacy. I'm picking the Rolls-Royce Wraith. I drove the Wraith for a week in April, and was really, really impressed. This car does everything, perfectly.

The not-Subaru crossover wagon | 2017 Volkswagen Alltrack First Drive

Fri, Sep 16 2016

Funnily enough, in light of dieselgate, Volkswagen is one of the few brands (along with Volvo and Subaru) to preserve the notion that you don't need a fuel-sucking SUV to meet your life-carrying needs. And, yes, VW's history of addressing off-road desires with all-wheel-drive dates to the mid-1980s with the Quantum Syncro (a.k.a. Passat) and Golf Country – the latter, sadly, never came stateside. The latest offering toward this effort is the 2017 Volkswagen Alltrack. What's an Alltrack? It's a slightly lifted, cladded, and butched-out version of the Golf Sportwagen (yes, formerly known as a Jetta). Not to steal Alltrack's thunder, but starting in 2017 you can also get the standard Sportwagen with 4Motion AWD, which is basically the same running gear for less money. The Alltrack starts at $26,950; the 4Motion Sportwagen starts at $24,930, both with the dual-clutch automatic available at launch. Any discussion of tall wagons brings Subaru immediately to mind, both with the Outback and the Impreza-based Crosstrek. The Volkswagen Alltrack sits between the two in size at 180.2 inches long – 5 more than the Crosstrek and 9.4 inches shorter than the Outback. The 2017 Subaru Outback starts at $25,645, and VW's comparisons focus on the Outback, which is understandable given the similar starting price. A bare-bones Crosstrek starts at $22,245, but quickly gets into Golf price overlap. The Alltrack and the 4Motion Golf Sportwagen are superior daily drivers to the Subaru, whether you're doing an emergency lane change or just trying to merge onto the interstate. Meanwhile, the Crosstrek doesn't have the refinement of the VW. Can we fault Subaru though? It's set a sales record every year in a row since 2010 and is looking at about triple the sales volume of VW's Golf for 2016. So we'll stick to telling you what we think of the Alltrack and let the dealers fight for your dollars. First thing's first. Yes, you can have the Golf Sportwagen and even the Alltrack with a manual six-speed gearbox. The seven-speed DSG automatic is very good, but it's worth noting that any manual gearbox is a rarity these days, especially when we're not talking about a two-seat sports car. You will have to wait until early 2017 for that option, but it also saves you $1,100 off both models. Second, the Alltrack and 4Motion Sportwagens get identical engines. Whether manual or DSG, VW's EA888 turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder is under the hood.

VW Golf R 400 reportedly green-lit (again)

Sun, Apr 26 2015

After speaking to Volkswagen powertrain boss Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neusser at the 2015 New York International Auto Show, we uncovered that the Volkswagen Golf R 400 would be sold in the United States... if it ever made it to production at all, that is. That prerequisite looks like it's about to be fulfilled, as the same good doctor that said the super-powered GTI would come to the US has confirmed to Car that development is currently underway. This follows up on reports from late 2014 that the 400-horsepower car would make production. "We have the Golf more sporty than ever before, since we soon will have the Golf R 400 – we will do this car," Neusser told Car. "We are in fact in development of it right now." That is, we think you'll agree, splendid news. Of course, it also begs the question of when the new car will arrive. According to Car, it'll be just "a few short months," indicating that the Frankfurt Motor Show will likely host the Golf R 400's debut later this year. Whether that proves correct, though, likely won't be clear until later this summer.
