The famed "Rust Bucket" is officially on the auction block!
She got her name from her awesome patina (and a little bit of rust) and the official name of the vehicle she is based on; the Kubelwagen - translation "Bucket Car".
I love this little beast, and so does everybody else!! She is lowered sitting on polished Porsche cookie cutters rims wrapped in Smartcar rubber. I bought her several years ago and used her as my daily driver for about an year and a half. Now I only take her out when it's nice out. She stays in the garage when not in use. Her registration and safety inspection are good through March of 2014. Engine, transmission, lights, horn all work as they should. Mileage is unknown.
Engine is not original to the car. Previous owner swapped out a rebuilt one. Great compression on all four cylinders. New carb last year, new battery, alternator, and ignition switch a few years back. It had a top but it wasn't in the best shape so I took it off, thought about getting a new one but no real point to one if you always drive with it down. The back seat cushion is also missing. I never had anyone in the back and always had the seat backs down for cargo so it never really mattered to me. I do have window inserts that are practically brand new in protective sleeves as well. locking gascap with key.
There is some rust that could be cleaned up and repaired but I liked the "barn find" look so I left her the way I got her. Floors are solid with rubber mats. I do have a marine radio, extra steering wheel, and rebuildable carb to go with it.
I love this car and will own another one someday for sure. I just don't have the time for her and want her to be able to spend more time in the sun where she belongs.
If you don't know a lot about aircooled Volkswagens or Things specifically you'll want to study up because everyone and their mother will want to talk to you about her and tell you a story about their friend in college that had one.
Buyer is responsible for all shipping arrangements and cost. No overseas buyers. Make sure you have the wife's approval before bidding.

2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid
Tue, 12 Feb 2013More Fun Than A Prius, Less Sensible Than A TDI
Let's have some fun, and do some math. We're talking pretty rudimentary stuff, multiplication and division, to figure out if the upcoming Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid can make a baseline case for itself against two very strong competitors in this segment. The competitors in question, at least for now, are two more Jettas: the diesel-drinking TDI and the fit-for-the-masses SE with VW's long-serving 2.5-liter engine.
To keep the equations clean and simple (hey, we're writers), we'll calculate based on the most flattering EPA miles per gallon stat from highway driving for all cars, assume a healthy 20,000 miles driven per year, and factor in today's average cost for the respective fuels these three require: diesel (TDI), regular (SE) and premium (Hybrid). We'll also start with the base prices for all models.
VW using other manufacturing locations as leverage in battle with TN [w/video]
Sat, 26 Apr 2014We've reached a new step in the ongoing drama at Volkswagen's factory in Chattanooga, TN. The United Auto Workers recently dropped its opposition to the union vote and agreed that it wouldn't hold another ballot for at least a year. Now, the new question becomes where VW is going to build its forthcoming midsize SUV.
Earlier, it had been considered all but certain that the SUV, likely a production version of the CrossBlue concept (pictured above), would be built in Tennessee. However, it seems the Chattanooga factory might have competition to produce it. In emails obtained by The Detroit News, VW's lawyer wrote to the Tennessee economic development department in January saying, "While we understand there are some 'non-deal' issues that are causing a delay in the TN solution, VW has been successful in reaching agreement on terms at the alternative locations."
As previously reported, the state of Tennessee allegedly offered VW about $300 million in incentives to build the vehicle there and create an estimated 1,350 jobs, but it later rescinded the deal. Newly leaked documents from NewsChannel 5 (WTVF-TV) in Nashville allegedly show just how close that offer was to being completed. It appears that VW actually sent the government the first draft of a memorandum of understanding agreeing to the incentives, but the state removed the offer in late January.
Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE is a sleek take on brand's future CUV
Tue, Jan 13 2015Volkswagen continues its long tease leading up to an eventual US-built, seven-passenger, three-row crossover with the Cross Coupe GTE at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. While it's still affixed with the tinsel of a concept car, there are a lot of details that will arrive on VW's eventual production crossover. The wheelbase of the GTE is said to be identical to the production model, although this five-passenger CUV is actually about a foot shorter overall, Volkswagen's chief of design, Klaus Bischoff, told Autoblog. The overall shape of the GTE's greenhouse, meanwhile, will also be very similar to the car that'll come to market, although more progressive from the C-pillar forward (that's right kids, that sexy sloping rear end isn't for production). Despite the aggressive rake, a peek in the GTE's trunk revealed room for the CUV's third row. Beyond hinting at a new addition to the company's lineup, the GTE also gives us a look at future Volkswagen design, including the use of four-element LED running lamps. Body lines will be as sharp as is feasible. Look for the production version of Volkswagen's seven-passenger SUV at the end of next year. Until then, check out the two-row concept, courtesy of our live images from the 2015 Detroit Auto Show.
