I love my Thing and hate to let it go but I don't get much chance to take it out anymore, so I'm ready to pass it on to someone else.

Pros:

Looks good. A classic “20 footer” that is not perfect but looks pretty nice from across the street.
Runs good. The engine, transmission, clutch all work fine. It will go 70 mph on the highway (I do about 60 on highways but drive mostly on side streets). Good brakes.
Everything works except for the windshield washer. All lights, turn signals, windshield wipers, horn, aux plugs, all work.
Very original. Everything is vintage 1974 or a close match, except for the working radio/CD.
New Thing Shop top and frame ($$$) is a perfect match for the original but is better made.
Garage kept for the nine years I’ve owned it.
The exact mileage is unknown. The working odometer reads 48,800. I’ve driven it 12,000 miles.
Includes 4 side window curtains, spare tire, extra rim, John Muir VW repair book, VW Thing tow bar.

Cons:

I patched rust spots and repainted the car in original VW Sunshine Yellow 8 years ago. Up close, the paint and finish are not perfect.
It leaks oil – not a lot but I keep a pan under it because there are always a few drops of oil. My mechanic thinks it’s the oil cooler seal.
The floor pans look okay from inside the car but they are fiberglassed on the underside.

Volkswagen rules out more potent Polo R

Volkswagen may be planning ever more powerful versions of its Golf, but don't expect that lust for power to trickle down to the smaller Polo anytime soon as the German automaker has reportedly ruled out the prospect of making a Polo R. This according to Autovisie, the automotive section of Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, in speaking to VW representatives at the launch of the new Polo GTI. Where the previous Polo GTI offered 177 horsepower, the new one packs 189 and is available with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The company briefly offered a Polo WRC Street with 220 horsepower, but that was only for a limited edition that Autovisie says will not be repeated for mainstream production. Which may just be for the best, as far as we're concerned, as no versions of the Polo are offered in the US, and we don't need yet another piece of forbidden fruit we can't get our hands on. The decision may seem at odds with the Polo R WRC rally machine with which Volkswagen has been dominating the World Rally Championship for the past two seasons, but was likely made in order to keep the Polo from infringing on Golf territory. VW currently offers the Golf GTI with 210 horsepower and the Golf R with 292, and showcased an even more powerful version with nearly 400 hp.

Wagons ho! These three images of the upcoming Volkswagen Golf Wagon have leaked online ahead of the car's official debut, which may very well be at the Geneva Motor Show. Looking over the photos doesn't really bring any surprises - after all, this is a VW Golf with a wagon rear end grafted on, or basically what we expect next Jetta SportWagen will be.
We can only share these three images at this time, but fret not, folks. There's little doubt that all the details and images will be flowing from Volkswagen in short order. In the meantime, click on the images above to view them in high resolution.

Jay Leno brings a rotary-powered VW Beetle to the garage

It takes something really unique or inventive to pique Jay Leno's interest. His show, Jay Leno's Garage, has featured everything from concours-worthy classics to completely custom, home-built machinery. How do you get Leno to feature one of more than 20 million Beetles on his program? Stick a turbocharged rotary engine under the hood. The Beetle's owner, Mario Markakis, swapped the car's stock flat four-cylinder for the Wankel engine from a 1990 Mazda RX-7 Series 5 Turbo. The engine's 250 horsepower are fed through a reinforced version of the Beetle's stock four-speed transmission. That's about five times the original engine's output. It works well, with the car putting down some impressive times at the drag strip. Markakis did most of the work to the Beetle in his garage.
