I would not be selling this car, but my wife needs a truck for work, so my pride and joy must go.
My story about this car goes like this: The summer before last I found this being sold by a collector in Oakland California who purchased it from a another collector who acquired it from the woman who was the original owner. The mileage is pretty close to accurate but apparently there were a few months when the woman owned it and the odometer wasn't working, but she had it fixed. Before I bought it I asked my mechanic if it looked like a low-mileage car to him and he said he definitely thought it was. The car starts up runs, and drives great. Alignment is right on. It has good power for a little car and feels solid on the road. I've driven it back and forth from LA to San Francisco a couple times along the coast, and those were some of the most enjoyable drives I've ever taken - the car handled the 400 mile trip with ease. For a while I thought the car was getting hot in traffic because that's what the gauge was telling me, but it stayed cool on long drives and any other type of driving that wasn't stop and go. so I changed the thermostat, the radiator, the water pump, timing belt seals and pulleys, but that didn't fix the problem. My mechanic said the oil temperature stays where it should be, and that's what mattered. So for now it has been concluded that the problem is just with the gauge in the control panel. I had planned to switch that out soon too, but won't have time before the sale. The car has never over heated. The timing belt and pump were changed just last week. The week before that I did a new K&N air filter, bosch fuel filter and new fuel pump. I also changed the oil pan and gasket to end a small oil leak that was coming from the pan. That took care of it. The radiator was done last year. All belts are new. This car is a completely original, never-molested example of one of Volkswagen's most classic iconic models. The interior seems to be all original with minor tears on the top of the back seat. Both front seats look great. Carpet seems to be original and in very good shape - it could just use a little clean. Headliner is new. Absolutely no rust on the body. There are little trim pieces here and there that could be replaced, but overall a clean example with most everything intact. The rubber bumper guard is ripped on the rear bumper, but I will include an OEM replacement that I sourced. In addition the driver's side door handle is a little loose, but operational. I will include a replacement for that as well. Please write with any questions you may have. Happy bidding! |

World Car Of The Year down to its final four
Wed, 13 Mar 2013
Judges for the World Car of the Year Award have narrowed down the finalists to just four vehicles. Out of a total of 42 entries, only the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Porsche Boxster/Cayman, Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT-86 and Volkswagen Golf remain standing. For Volkswagen, this marks the second consecutive year the company has had an entry among the finalists, and the fourth time since 2009. In order to qualify, a vehicle must be on sale on two continents during the span of time between January 1, 2013 and May 30, 2013. A panel of 66 journalists from 23 countries then vote on the finalists.
Three vehicles have made the cut for the last round of voting on the 2013 World Performance Car as well, with the Cayman/Boxster and FR-S/BRZ/GT-86 running against the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Meanwhile, the Renault Zoe, Tesla Model S and Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid are duking it out for the World Green Car Award. Finally, the World Car Design of the Year Award is up for grabs between the Aston Martin Vanquish, Jaguar F-Type, and the Mazda6. Check out the full press release below. Overall winners will be presented at the 2013 New York Auto Show.
VW recalling 38k Jettas, Passats, Golfs and Beetles for fuel leak
Wed, Dec 31 2014Earlier we reported on a recall issued for the 2015 VW Jetta regarding a problem with the headlights, and now Volkswagen and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued another recall for a separate issue affecting not only the Jetta, but several other models as well. The issue revolves around a sealing cap in the fuel rail, which could leak fuel into the engine compartment and potentially cause a fire. The problem affects an estimated 37,979 vehicles in the United States, including the 2014-15 Jetta (manufactured between March 28 and November 24, 2014), the 2014-15 Passat (April 7 to November 18), the 2015 Golf and GTI (July 1 to November 20) and the 2014-15 Beetle and Beetle Convertible (March 31 to November 27). That covers pretty much the entire range offered by Volkswagen of America, short of the Tiguan and Touareg crossovers (and the discontinued Eos convertible). Considering, though, that VW routinely sells around 30,000 vehicles in the US each month, the small number of vehicles being recalled (relative to the quantity out there) tells you this recall really only affects a specific cross-section of models. Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to be contacted by their dealers to have the fuel rails replaced. RECALL Subject : Fuel Leaking Into Engine Compartment Report Receipt Date: DEC 22, 2014 NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V809000 Component(s): FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE Potential Number of Units Affected: 37,979 Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. SUMMARY: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Jetta vehicles manufactured March 28, 2014, to November 24, 2014, certain 2014-2015 Passat vehicles manufactured April 7, 2014, to November 18, 2014, certain 2015 Golf and GTI vehicles manufactured July 1, 2014, to November 20, 2014, and certain 2014-2015 Beetle and Beetle Convertible vehicles manufactured March 31, 2014, to November 27, 2014. A sealing cap at the fuel rail may fail, allowing fuel to leak into the engine compartment. CONSEQUENCE: A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, can result in a vehicle fire. REMEDY: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel rails with new parts, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 24Bi.
VW announces recall of 26,000 2014 models with 1.8T engines
Tue, 22 Apr 2014Volkswagen has followed up on a stop-sale order from earlier this month, announcing a voluntarily recall of 26,400 vehicles that are powered by the brand's 1.8-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The new mill replaced the despised 2.5-liter five-cylinder in the Jetta, Passat, Beetle and Beetle Convertible last year. Weirdly, though, of the 26,452 units covered in the recall, only 1,655 are customer vehicles.
According to VW, the affected models were built between February 1 and April 6 of this year, and feature bad O-ring seals in the transmission oil cooler. Apparently, the faulty O-rings could cause a fluid leak, as they won't seal between the oil cooler and transmission. VW is blaming a material change from a supplier for the problem.
There have been no fires, injuries, accidents or fatalities relating to this issue, which VW will be fixing free of charge. Customers will need to report to dealers to have the O-rings replaced.
