1984 Volkswagen Gti, Exceptional, Unrestored Condition on 2040-cars
Opelousas, Louisiana, United States
Up for auction is my beloved 1984 VW Rabbit GTI. It has 151,497 miles which may increase as I still drive it occasionally. It is silver with the blue interior. I have dark blue cloth seats installed for daily use and am including the original sport seats with almost perfect upholstery. I only put these seats in for shows and special events. Car runs and drives perfectly and is an absolute blast to own. The thumbs-up are continuous. It is in original unrestored condition. Paint is original and shows plenty of signs of its 30 year age. There are small dings and scratches and some paint fading especially around gas cap area. Sometime in its past it received a new driver's side front fender that has faded a little more than the rest of the car. Really can't tell if not pointed out. No rust Bumpers are like new as well as fender flares and front air dam. Tires are older with some age cracking but plenty of tread. They are mounted on like-new Snowflake wheels. Spare is in good shape and all emergency tools and jack are included and in exceptionally good condition. Interior is in great condition, maybe an eight out of ten. There is some fading of some plastic surfaces such as on the center console which is almost universal with the dark blue VW interiors of this vintage. Dash has no cracking. Headliner is in beautiful shape, no rips or tears or sagging. All electrical components and lights work properly. Air conditioning works great which is a blessing here in the deep south. I have a relay harness added for the headlights which makes them brighter without adding a burden to the electrical system. It is a plug-and-play and can be removed easily for car shows. Wipers and washers work fine including the one on the rear window. At 136,000 miles I put on new shocks and struts as well as new brake pads and shoes on the rear. There is a small crack in the "accordion" shift boot, but you can't see it unless you spread out the pleats. The golf ball shifter is cool. Runs and shifts great. It has a Neuspeed shifter weight which really enhances the shift feel. Also has the Neuspeed upper and lower strut braces which really enhances handling. Like on a rail. It really is in great shape. I religiously change the oil at 3500 miles with Mobil1 and fix any little thing that pops up. The only thing I know it needs at the moment is the cable that you adjust the heater temp. I hate to sell this car but I have too many. I'm now on social security and my enthusiast days are winding down. Winning bidder must make arrangements to transport the car themselves. Car is completely roadworthy and should make any cross-country trips fine, but no warranties are implied. Mechanical machines can have a problem any time and this one is thirty years old. I'll try to answer any questions. Buyer should be prepared to pay $500.00 deposit at end of auction. Balance when car is picked up. Complete balance or car stays here. I may be willing to deliver car in U.S. if buyer pays gas and a return airline ticket to Lafayette, Louisiana. I'd drive it cross-country at the drop of a hat.

Former Audi chief designer Wolfgang Egger leaves Italdesign
Sat, Dec 27 2014The latest word from the international community of automotive designers has it that Wolfgang Egger is leaving Italdesign, but just where the accomplished designer will land next and who will take his place remain big question marks. Egger is a designer who has bounced back and forth between Italy and Germany over the course of his career. He was born in Germany but studied in Milan. He began his career at Alfa Romeo in 1989 and was named its chief designer by 1993 before being head-hunted by the Volkswagen Group in 1998 to head up the design department at Seat. A few years later he went returned to Italy to run the Lancia design department, and was subsequently renamed to the same post at Alfa Romeo. In 2007 he went back to his native Germany to head up the Audi design office, over which he assumed complete responsibility by 2012, but left Audi in 2013 to run Italdesign. For those unfamiliar, Italdesign is the studio founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro (pictured at left next to Egger) back in 1968 but which, along with many other Italian design houses, fell on hard times in recent years. The Volkswagen Group swooped in to rescue the troubled studio in 2010, turning it into something of an in-house advanced design department to provide an alternative perspective on the direction in which the group and its various brands could take their respective designs moving forward. With Egger now leaving its helm, Italdesign and its German parent company will need to find his replacement, and we're sure they'll announce one in due course. The bigger question on our minds, however, is where Egger himself will head next. Given the path his career has taken to date, we wouldn't be surprised to see him land elsewhere in the Volkswagen Group or find a new role in the expanding Fiat Chrysler Automobiles empire. Then again, Egger could find it time to open an entirely new chapter. Watch this space. Touring the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg
Mon, 23 Sep 2013Forgive the ribbon up top - this isn't so much of a Read This as a Look At This. Ran When Parked took a tour of the sprawling Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, and while there's a spot of text about the different and unique vehicles on display in the rotating exhibits, it's largely the collection of pictures of odd, one-off VW-badged cars and vans that excites. If you're a fan of the weird and wild, this is a post you'll want to look at.
As RWP points out, this is the larger, but less busy, museum targeted purely at Volkswagen products. The smaller AutoStadt museum, meanwhile, covers a much broader swath, with products from other Volkswagen Group members. Only VW, Volvo are doing enough to electrify in Europe, study says
Wed, Jun 16 2021Among major carmakers, Volkswagen and Volvo are doing enough to electrify their vehicle lineups in Europe, and the EU needs to set tougher CO2 emission limits if it wants to meet Green Deal targets, according to a climate group's study. Sales of battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids almost tripled last year, boosted by tighter emission standards and government subsidies. This summer, the European Union is expected to announce more ambitious CO2 targets; by 2030, the average CO2 emissions of new cars should be 50% below 2021 levels, versus the existing target of 37.5%. Volkswagen aims to have 55% group-wide BEV sales in Europe by 2030, while Swedish carmaker Volvo, owned by China's Geely says its lineup will be fully electric by then. VW ID4 front three quarter dark View 19 Photos Based on IHS Markit car production forecasts, according to the study from European campaign group Transport and Environment (T&E), Volkswagen and Volvo have "aggressive and credible strategies" to shift from fossil-fuel cars to electric vehicles. Others like Ford Motor Co have set ambitious targets, "but lack a robust plan to get there," T&E said. Ford plans an all-electric lineup in Europe by 2030. T&E said BMW, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Daimler AG and Toyota rank the worst as they have low BEV sales, have "no ambitious phase-out targets, no clear industrial strategy, and an over-reliance in the case of BMW, Daimler and Toyota on hybrids." JLR, owned by India's Tata Motors, says its luxury Jaguar brand will be all-electric by 2025, but has been less specific about electrification of its higher-volume Land Rover brand. BMW and Daimler have been reluctant to set hard deadlines for phasing out fossil-fuel cars. T&E said even if carmakers meet their targets, in 2030 BEV sales could be 10 percentage points below those needed to meet the EU's Green Deal — which targets net zero emissions by 2050. Rather than a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030, based on carmakers' existing production plans, the EU could set more ambitious targets, T&E said - an up to 35% reduction in CO2 emissions from new cars by 2025, around 50% by 2027 and up to 70% in 2030. "Targets need to be gradually tightened so that carmakers not only commit to phasing out fossil fuels, but develop a strategy that gets them there on time," Julia Poliscanova, T&E senior director for vehicles and e-mobility, said in a statement.
