1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup Truck - 45 Mpg - 5 Spd - 2-door 1.6l on 2040-cars
Oakland, California, United States
Ask me any questions.
It's is a classic RARE 2-seater pickup truck -- the VW Caddy Rabbit Pickup from 1981 -- in GOOD CONDITION. It's smaller, but carries a full load of soil, or a pack of dogs, or a dirtbike, or crates of veggies & fruit. Easy to drive, smooth gear transitioning, fun and old school vibes. No need to smog, comfy seats, back window opens up to truck bed. And you'll literally be Amazed at how infrequently you'll need to hit up the fuel station. I'm the third owner after a father and son who were both mechanics and worked on the truck themselves, used it as a commuter for a few years, and then just let it sit in a garage for years while they drove bigger newer diesels. I'm selling because I had hoped to run it on bio-diesel fuel but bio-diesel is creating air in the fuel lines and regular diesel doesn't get air in the fuel lines - probably a fuel injector issue. Although I love driving this cool little truck, my dog is afraid of the engine sounds & we're looking for something she'd like better. The BAD: -broken odometer, over-estimated miles at 160,000 -no radio, but hook ups & speakers are ready -emergency/hand brake -not much play in clutch -some difficulty getting into 1st & 5th - I've gotten used to it but it's tricky for a new driver - and indicates some work may need to be done -rear bumper was bumped and isn't totally straight -cosmetics: tear in driver's seat fabric, and cracks on foam dashboard, tears in screens on camper shell The GOOD: -newer 5 speed manual transmission -new fuel lines & new fuel filter -new clutch cable -new battery -new timing belt, tensioner pulley, heli-coil, pulley belt -new brake pads & rotors -third owner after a father & son, both mechanics can give committed buyer the original owners contact info. Very well taken care of. -really gets 45 MPG ! -camper shell / topper -comes with optional: complete set of spare tires, jack & lug wrench, 2nd clutch, spare windows, original 4 speed transmission (all for sale separately too) So fun to drive! It's a turn key truck, READY TO DRIVE. Ask me any questions Make me an OFFER! We also have a big gasoline Dodge Ram 5-seater truck & camper shell for sale for $2000 |

VW looking to MAN up, ditch Mercedes van deal
Wed, 16 Jan 2013Unlike the US, the commercial truck market throughout the rest of the world is chocked full of competitors from many different automakers. Since 2006, Volkswagen has had a fullsize van called the Crafter that was a result of a partnership with Daimler AG and based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. This partnership is supposed to last through 2016, but Reuters is reporting that VW might be looking to end its relationship with Daimler and create its own van in cooperation with German truck and bus maker MAN.
The article says that VW AG has more than a 75-percent stake in MAN, which would essentially be keeping the new commercial vehicle in-house. Even if VW bolts, Daimler still has a deal worked out in the commercial truck industry between its subsidiary Mitsubishi Fuso and Renault-Nissan to supply the other with different trucks.
Volkswagen considering a four-door, four-seat XL1
Fri, 22 Aug 2014According to a report in Autocar, Volkswagen might have more in mind for the XL1 than mining it for advances to grace the next-generation Golf. Aiming to fight the Honda FCEV due for public consumption next year, we're told VW executives have put a four-door, four-seater version of the XL1 - it could be called XL2 - on the drawing board. The impetus is said to come from the top, with VW Group chairman Ferdinand Piëch intent on staying in the deep end of "super-efficent vehicles."
Autocar suspects the necessary changes could raise the weight of the car from 1,749 pounds to 2,068 pounds, which would make it four pounds less than the 2,072-pound Up! we drove a few years ago. Crucially, however, the mag thinks the extra capacity wouldn't change the two-seater's 310-mile-per-gallon rating, with tech tweaks and the aerodynamic benefit of a longer car offsetting the weight. Speculation is that the back seats would be staggered like the fronts in order to maintain the XL1's overall profile.
We recently heard about another XL1 variant that's gone off the radar entirely, the Ducati-engined XLR that we thought we'd see at the Geneva Motor Show and that was said to be going into production, so this one could go the same way. The biggest hurdle to making such an idea a reality, though, could be the price: the current XL1 costs 110,000 euros ($146,116). If VW really is going to compete with the Honda FCEV and the Toyota FCV - $70,000 in Japan - that might be where it wants to start.
Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Mercedes also under diesel emissions scrutiny
Sat, Oct 10 2015The controversy over Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal isn't limited to the US. In Europe, where diesel engines are far more popular, the issue is shining a harsh light on the NEDC emissions test. As already known, the evaluation does a poor job of reflecting real-world production of NOx, and it appears a significant number of automakers are affected. The Guardian in the UK has been reporting on real-world test results from a company called Emissions Analytics. After the latest round of checks, vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi were found to generate far more NOx than they should. The newspaper also published similar results for Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Fiat, Volvo, Jeep, Citroen, VW, and Audi. On average, the figures are about four times over the limit of producing the pollutant. Unlike VW and its defeat device, these automakers aren't actually breaking the rules. The vehicles perform up to the NEDC lab test for emissions, but those results simply aren't translated to the street. "The VW issue in the US was purely the trigger which threw light on a slightly different problem in the EU - widespread legal over-emissions," Nick Molden from Emissions Analytics said to The Guardian. A big fight to decide the future of this issue appears to be on the horizon. Automakers claim that they can't meet the next round of tightening emissions regulations and are asking for compromises. Although, spokespeople for Mercedes and Honda told The Guardian that the brands would be in favor of the stricter rules. Meanwhile, some European governments began backtracking their support of diesels well before this scandal came to light. The added scrutiny certain hasn't helped the future of the oil-burner.
