A very rare and hard to find vehicle, the Passat W8 is a 4.0L DOHC 8-Cylinder engine producing 270 Horsepower. It's called a W8 instead of a V8 because the engine's concept design of having two 4-cylinder engines put together, sharing the same crankshaft, thus the shape of the "w". The angles of the piston locations gives the engine enough horizontal opposition to make it a very balanced, smooth, vibration-free and quiet engine, coupled with VW's attention to detail of final fit, finish & insulation makes this one quiet and elegant vehicle, but don’t let that fool you, with it's power, it's a wolf in sheep's clothing! The W8 engine is the predecessor and design concept behind the Bugatti Veyron, which is an 8.0L W12 engine. Incredibly, the W8 is also a very efficient engine design with optimum performance that despite having all the weight of the All Wheel Drive system in the Passat, it gets excellent fuel economy not only at it’s published 18-22 MPG, but I often track up to 24mpg while cruising along at 70 MPH on the flat highways. How often do you get more economy than the published MPG?? A word about how the W8 compares to newer Passats ('07 and up) with the 6 cylinder engine that produces around the same horsepower: Although I haven't driven one of the new Passats, I am not new to the concept of driving cars that come in both 6 and 8 cylinder models, even with relatively similar engine displacement size but a significant difference in power between the 6 and 8 cylinder engines. Two references I will make are the 90's Ford F-150 and the 90's Taurus LX and SHO. The 1995 F-150 Inline 6 cylinder was a 4.9L displacement while the small V8 was a 5.0L, nearly the same size, yet the 8 cylinder produced more horsepower and torque, which had more off the line launch as well as passing at higher speeds. It was also night and day difference between the 1997 Ford Taurus LX with the 3.0L DOHC 6 cylinder than the Taurus SHO with the 3.4L DOHC small V-8. The bottom line is the more cylinders you have creating combustion at the same time, the greater power you are going to produce, more explosive power (torque) you have off the line, the greater passing ability you will have at the higher speeds (horsepower), and the power is a more consistent power all the way through the RPM range and with a good deal of power happening from a lower RPM, which means more stronger, consistent power all the way through, not just at the top of the RPM gauge. And an engine that works less harder, lasts longer. So the new passat 6cyl engines can't out perform the W8 engine. This is all in my honest opinion of course. I am the 2nd owner of this wonderful Passat, I purchased it back in 03/2006. It was a 36-month corporate lease return from Colorado, I bought it from a dealer in Oregon and drove it home here in California where it’s stayed and been gently used. A somewhat interesting story, I actually bought the exact same vehicle, a Gray 2003 Passat Wagon (with Black interior, which isn’t as nice as the Gray) but in the GLX V6 the day before from Washington and drove that home. When I got home I found this Passat W8, which I was excited at the time that there was even one available to buy. I flew up the next day and paid $6k more for the W8 than I did for the V6 GLX. I had never even driven one before. But when I drove the W8, I was in love. It really is an amazing vehicle and was the 1st vehicle to impress me, and I had driven a wide variety of cars in life by then. I’ve been in love with it ever since. I sold the GLX a week later. From the cockpit forward, it feels and handles like a sports car, but has not only all the versatility of a wagon, it flies below the radar being a wagon too. ;-) Prior to me buying the Passat, it was a company vehicle as indicated to me at the time and also proven by the CARFAX report, probably from someone higher up in the company is who usually gets the highline vehicles as a company vehicle. It was serviced regularly at the local VW dealership there religiously as also indicated by CARFAX report. Since I have owned it, all routine oil changes have been performed and I only run synthetic motor oil in it. It's a little pricey to do so, but it protects your investment. Admittedly, I'm not very good at keeping service records and such but as the car still drives like brand new, it will be easy to ascertain that it has been well cared for. I replaced an injector recently and that's all the engine has needed above it's normal maintenance intervals. I’m sad to see my baby go, but I am raising capital for buying some real estate so it’s time to let someone else enjoy her for the rest of her life. It’s not uncommon to find one of these available for sale with over 200k miles and it still feels tight and responsive in the engine as well as still being solid in the body/suspension. I live and work from home and have more than one vehicle to drive so the miles are very low. It’s basically twice the car as it has half the mileage as most other W8’s of it’s age. Although the engine and handling is flawless, the vehicle of course isn’t without a couple of cosmetic flaws. They are as follows: 1. A small dent on the hood that has it scratched too. It was there when I bought it, it never bothered me and doesn’t stand out much. If you have one of those dent tools, you can probably pop it up. With a little touch up paint pen from the auto shop, you can have it looking just fine. Maybe I will even work on handling those before it gets picked up. 2. The luggage rack has some small pitting in the chrome at a couple of the connection points, it doesn’t stand out unless you put your eyes right up on it and it’s plastic underneath so it’s not rusting or anything. There is NO RUST of any type on the vehicle by the way. It’s been a California car that has never seen snow since I bought it in 2006. 3. There may be a scratch in the clearcoat in a couple of places. You can probably buff them out with the right compound. I just had the car professionally detailed, even had the headlights restored to near new condition so the car looks good, but they didn’t buff a scratch or two all the way out. 4. The interior is near flawless, seats look perfect. The only thing on the interior is the ash tray in the back of the center console isn’t closing. I don’t know if it needs a new ashtray from ebay or if it’s the center console housing. I’m just going to put some Velcro or something on the top edge to wedge it closed, if you want to glue it shut, that’s up to you. It’s never been used, who smokes in the car these days or allows a passenger to smoke in the car? It’s an unnecessary item to me, but I will make it presentable. By the way, it’s been smoke-free and pet free by me and I’m pretty sure from the previous owner as the ashtrays and lighter were never used nor did it ever have a smell when I bought it. It still smells like a brand new car practically. The buyer of this car is getting a wonderful car, originally over $40k in 2003 cars/money, same car today would be over $50k. With it’s low mileage, you get it for the final 2/3 of it’s life at a fraction of the price. Line yourself up a good mechanic that works on imports and domestics and this car is far less to maintain than a Ford! With the power of the internet these days you can save on parts too! You can get any of the parts needed to make this a flawless vehicle if you are so inclined to do so. Vahland leaving VW over dispute on how to run NA region
Wed, Oct 14 2015On November 1, Winfried Vahland was supposed to take over Volkswagen Group's recently created North American region that combines Canada, the US, and Mexico. But the longtime exec has instead decided to leave the automaker after a dispute over how to manage the new combined region. Vahland is currently the boss at Skoda, and in a statement about his departure the Czech company said: "Differing views on the organization of the new Group region have led to this decision; this decision is expressly not related to current events on the issue of diesel engines." Vahland is leaving at his own request, the announcement says. Vahland was appointed to run to North American region during VW's massive corporate shakeup on September 25. The decision was part of the automaker's plan to put a greater emphasis on regions and brands, rather than on centralized authority. According to Automotive News Europe citing a report from Germany's Auto Bild, Vahland was passed over for the CEO job, with Matthias Muller taking that position. Amidst the changes, Michael Horn remained at the helm of Volkswagen Group of America, reporting to the new regional boss. Vahland joined the automaker in 1990 and started running VW's operations in China in 2005. He became boss at Skoda in 2010. "In the last 25 years, Prof. Vahland made a great contribution to the company. We respect his decision and thank him for his exceptional performance," Muller said in the departure announcement. Prof. Dr. Winfried Vahland leaves Volkswagen Group 14.10.2015 Prof. Dr. Winfried Vahland leaves Volkswagen Group Mlada Boleslav, 14 October 2015 – After 25 years of successful work in Volkswagen Group, most recently as Chairman of SKODA, Prof. Dr. Winfried Vahland is leaving the company at his own request. Prof. Vahland will therefore not be taking up the position of overall responsibility for the North American Region (NAR). Differing views on the organisation of the new Group region have led to this decision; this decision is expressly not related to current events on the issue of diesel engines. Prof. Vahland began his work in Volkswagen Group in 1990. After holding several key positions at home and abroad, he took over Group responsibility as President and CEO of Volkswagen in China in 2005 and contributed significantly to the successful new direction of Volkswagen in China. He was appointed Chairman of the Board of Management of SKODA in 2010.
UAW angered over VW workers getting right to defend anti-union vote
Thu, 13 Mar 2014The United Auto Workers have called a decision by the National Labor Relations Board allowing anti-UAW employees at the Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga the right to defend voting down unionization at the plant "an outrage."
You'll recall that the union was defeated by a vote of 712 to 626 in a contentious February election. The UAW claims the outcome was unfairly swayed by pro-business, anti-union forces, including Senator Bob Corker and political advocate Grover Norquist.
This new decision by the NLRB essentially gives workers backed by the anti-UAW National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation and Southern Momentum a formal voice in the impending hearing on the UAW's appeal of the vote.
Everybody's doing flying cars, so why aren't we soaring over traffic already?
Mon, Oct 1 2018"Where's my flying car?" has been the meme for impending technology that never materializes since before there were memes. And the trough of disillusionment for vehicles that can take to sky continues to nosedive, despite a nonstop fascination with flying cars and a recent rash of announcements about the technology, particularly from traditional automakers. Earlier this month, Toyota applied for an eye-popping patent for a flying car that has wheels with spring-loaded pop-out helicopter rotors. The patent filing says the wheels/rotors would be electrically powered, while in on-land mode the vehicle would have differential steering like tracked vehicles such as tanks and bulldozers. At an airshow in July, Aston Martin unveiled its Volante Vision Concept, an autonomous hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle it developed with Rolls-Royce. Aston says the Volante can fly at top speeds of around 200 mph and bills it as a luxury car for the skies. Audi used the Geneva Motor Show in March to unveil a flying car concept called the Pop.Up Next it developed with Airbus and Italdesign. If the Pop.Up Next, an electric and autonomous quadcopter/city car combo, gets stuck in traffic, an app can be used to summon an Airbus-developed drone to pick up the passenger compartment pod, leaving the chassis behind. Audi said that the Pop.Up Next is a "flexible on-demand concept that could open up mobility in the third dimension to people in cities." But Audi also acknowledged that at this point it has no plans to develop it. The cash-stoked, skies-the-limit Silicon Valley tech crowd is also bullish on flying cars. The startup Kitty Hawk that's backed by Google co-founder Larry Page announced in June that it's taking pre-orders for its single-seat electric Flyer that's powered by 10 propellers and is capable of vertical takeoffs and landings. The current version can only fly up to 20 mph and 10 feet in the air and has a flight time of just 12 to 20 minutes on a full charge. The Flyer is considered a recreational vehicle, so doesn't require a pilot's license. Uber says it plans to launch its more ambitious Elevate program and UberAIR service in 2023. "Uber customers will be able to push a button and get a flight on-demand with uberAIR in Dallas, Los Angeles and a third international market," Uber Elevate promises on its website.
