These cars were only offered with an extremely problematic automatic transmission. It wasn't a question of *if* it would fail, it was *when*. No more worries with this one. Professionally swapped to a manual transmission using nothing but OEM parts/hardware/wiring. I went to great lengths to ensure it was done right. You have to push the clutch in for the car to start. The reverse lights and cruise control both work perfectly as well. I am a Volkswagen factory certified master technician, with a passion for TDI's. Everything was done right. If you're shopping for one of these cars, keep in mind the cost to replace both the automatic transmission and the BSM (balance shaft module) will run you over $7000. You'll never have to worry about either of those expensive repairs with this car.

Now, she runs and drives like a dream. Perfect cruiser while getting that great diesel mileage. And with a mere 137,000 miles, she's got alot of life left in her. The silver exterior paint is in great condition, and the interior is even better. I'd challenge you to find a nicer one, but chances are, you'll not find another one available like this. The number of these cars that have been converted to manual transmission is very small, and they don't pop up for sale often.

As for maintenance, she obviously has a brand new clutch kit and flywheel installed when the transmission was swapped. Fresh oil change (with Liqui-Moly 505.01 spec oil and OEM filter). Timing belt was just done @ 135K miles along with deleting that also problematic balance shaft module (BSM). All the filters were replaced less than a year ago. Tires have less than 5K miles on them (Bridgestones, no maypops). 4 small issues with the car. First, the antenna base gasket is missing (this doesn't seal against moisture, it's purely cosmetic - available on ebay for ~$10). Secondly, the little information center in the middle of the instrument cluster starts to fade out a bit when it's really hot outside (you can see in the picture of the instrument cluster). Third - the headlights are hazing over a bit. No big surprise there really, happens to most cars these days. Plenty of cheap "headlight restoration" services these days available almost anywhere. And finally, the transmission is from a V6 Passat. Works flawlessly of course, but runs a little higher in the RPM range on the highway. Currently, she'll run about 3000RPM at 78mph, and I average 41.5mpg at that speed (recently took her on a 500 mile trip to the dragon and back). As I understand, the european TDI transmission would run about 2300-2400rpms at that speed, so the difference is negligible. A european transmission and installation can be negotiated into the sale if desired, but the price will go up accordingly. I have purchased one, but didn't feel it was worth the work with the way she drives now. I'm perfectly happy with her. As she sits now, she really needs nothing but a new driver - and she wouldn't even need that, but I'm ready for a new boat so this has to go. She is being driven daily so mileage will go up slightly. I will help with shipping in any way possible if you desire, but I encourage you to come see her in person, and drive her home.

Autoblog Minute: VW finds CO2 'irregularities', Takata dropped by automakers, SEMA recap

Fri, Nov 6 2015

Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal gets a new wrinkle, US regulators hit Takata Corporation with a substantial fine, and we head to Las Vegas for a look at tuner paradise at the 2015 SEMA show. Autoblog senior editor Greg Migliore reports on this edition of Autoblog Minute Weekly Recap. Show full video transcript text [00:00:00] Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal gets a new wrinkle. US regulators issue a significant fine to Takata Corporation. And we take a peek inside tuner paradise at the 2015 SEMA show. I'm senior editor Greg Migliore and this is your Autoblog Minute Weekly Recap. The VW diesel emissions scandal, first brought to light in September, gets a new wrinkle, as an internal investigation by the German automaker revealed [00:00:30] irregularities in CO2 emissions that could affect approximately 800,000 vehicles. VW estimates the issue could pose a 2-billion euro economic risk. VW claims that most of the vehicles affected have diesel engines, but industry analysts say a 1.4-liter gas engine is also affected. VW says that fuel consumption figures were set too low during the CO2 certification process. During all of this, sales of some diesel-powered Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche models [00:01:00] have been halted. Takata Corporation is back in the news in connection with its deadly airbag scandal. Federal regulators fined Takata $70 million. If the parts supplier does not comply, the fine could balloon to $200 million. Takata was also dropped this week by its biggest customer, Honda. And now, Toyota and Mazda will be following Honda's lead in dropping Takata. We're also hearing that Mitsubishi and Subaru are considering a switch in air-bag inflator suppliers. SEMA 2015 [00:01:30] came and went. We saw offerings from Mopar, like the AWD Challenger concept. Honda unveiled a Ridgeline that it will race at the Baja 1000, which gives us a hint at what future production model could look like. The celebrity presence was also felt in Vegas as it always is. Kid Rock brought a Duramax Diesel Chevy Silverado, and Acura restored and presented Ludacris with his now famous 1993 Acura Legend. Those are the highlights from the week that was. Be sure to come back on Saturday for my full recap, [00:02:00] where I'll have some added insight into Hyundai's foray into the luxury sector. For Autoblog, I'm Greg Migliore. Volkswagen iBeetle gets integrated iPhone dock, little else

Fri, 19 Apr 2013

Apple fans have been itching to see the tech giant flex the full muscle of its iOS operating system in an automotive infotainment system for years, which is why we turned all sorts of excited when we caught wind of the Volkswagen iBeetle. The machine is headed to the Shanghai Motor Show for a debut, and VW promised it would be one of the "first cars in the world to have a genuine integrative interface for the iPhone that was coordinated with Apple." Listen closely, and you can hear the contented sigh of a million wallets opening.
Go ahead and close those up, kids.
In reality, the iBeetle offers little more than a dash-mounted dock and a special app that shows a few vehicle functions, which is about as far from an infotainment revolution as you're likely to find. In fact, the setup is little more than a factory rehash of aftermarket items, and hardly worth a whole model debut at an international motor show. And that's to say nothing of the fact that Apple relishes in changing the shape and form of its darling handheld at every generation. Volkswagen better be prepared to keep pace with appropriate docking mechanisms for the upcoming iPhone 5S, 6, 6S, et al.

Volkswagen's De Silva says next Scirocco will be 'completely different'

Tue, 02 Apr 2013

From our perspective, the reborn Volkswagen Scirocco is a handsome (if squat) little thing. Yet design-wise, it's always struck us as uncomfortably close to the Golf three-door hatchback with which it shares its basic underpinnings. That aesthetic kinship may be part of the reason why Volkswagen has steadfastly refused to import the Scirocco to North America, seeing as how the Golf doesn't regularly set the company's sales charts alight, and it's less expensive.
But that visual similarity might be about to change, says Walter De Silva, who recently told Australia's Car Advice that, "It must be completely different... we don't want to repeat the bodystyle of the Scirocco, we want to change that." Further, the Volkswagen Group's design boss says that the next-generation car isn't terribly far along in development yet - "at the moment, it's only a studio [project]... it's not defined." It's probably just as well, as the new seventh-generation Golf arguably borrows some of its design from the current Scirocco anyway.
So we should expect a much bolder, more differentiated design, right? Well, yes, no and maybe. Back in September, De Silva himself was quoted as saying that the era of flamboyant styling has passed, and that future VW designs will be simpler to better reflect the times and preserve resale value. So... how different could it be?
