2003 VW Passat

This car runs great but does have oil leak and some other issues. Car had very minor oil leak since 2012. Was rear ended April 2013 and soon after started had transmission leak. Progressive refused to cover the transmission leakage. Car is still driven daily. I drive it 100 to 200 miles every week.

The transmission shifts good but has occasional hard shifting, especially when down shifting. This is due to low fluid. It is a sealed transmission. I replaced the transmission seal and added new fluid several months ago due to the leak. It did not fix the leak. I'm not sure where the transmission is leaking from. The dealer could not tell me either. The car shifted great after adding the new fluid but now several months later, it is low on fluid again and starting to shift hard again. There was very little metal in the pan when I changed the filter earlier this year.

The car has an oil leak also. Oil leaks from back of engine and drops onto exhaust manifold causing smoke. This smoke is visible when idling. Engine is still strong so long as put oil in every so often. It does leave two puddles of oil under the car when parked as well as the transmission fluid leak. Occasionally will seem to smoke behind the car under heavy acceleration. Can't really tell if it's from the exhaust. It may be burning oil as well. Not too sure.

Car is otherwise loaded with features. Power everything. Cruise and radio controls on steering wheel. Leather interior. Moon roof. Automatic tiptronic transmission. Strong 1.8T engine. Good Michelin tires.

Recent parts/improvements:
2011: Set of 4 Michelin tires
2012: New coolant reservoir. New ignition coils. New timing belt, water pump, and belts.
2013: New transmission filter and pan seal.

I would fix the leaks and keep driving but am looking to get a truck. Plus it is daily reminder of getting rear ended.

I believe the oil leak would cost around $600 to fix based on dealer estimate. Dealer said previously it was cam seal leak. Not sure about the transmission leak since the dealer could not detect or determine location of leak.

Damage details: Car runs and drives but has following issues: engine has oil leak, likely cam tensioner seal. engine may be burning oil as well, not sure. has transmission fluid leak. car was rear ended in April 2013. has some damage to trunk, quarter panel, and lights. see pictures. slight bumper ball dent on front bumper. crack in plastic near glove box. dent in driver quarter panel. Trunk slightly buckled. Still opens fine. Rear bumper has damage. See pictures.

I am willing to deliver for $2 per mile. Otherwise, local pickup online or you arrange shipping.

Car is safe to drive. Not sure I'd drive cross country due to fluid leaks. I did drive 1000+ mile trip recently after I did the transmission fluid, filter, and seal. Transmission was solid on the trip and several months afterwards since fluid was right. On the trip, I just had to put 1 quart of engine oil every 300 miles when I stopped for gas.

2023 CES Editors' Picks

Mon, Jan 9 2023

Over the past few years, it has become more and more clear that the Consumer Electronics Show is a car show. And this year that reality is more clear than ever. Not only did established automakers show off seriously important vehicles, but a traditional electronics company brought a car that gives an idea of its intents (with the help of establishment car company). With so many car reveals, we had to rank our favorites. Our picks for this show are entirely electric. Or at least, they are on paper, since many are concepts. Considering the name of the show, it would be a little strange if they weren't. In fact, not only are many of our favorites concepts, they all are save for one. See how they shook out below. VW ID7 camo View 28 Photos 5. Volkswagen ID.7 "The ID.7 definitely got lost in the crowd at CES. That it was camouflaged definitely didn't help, even if that camo was electroluminescent (BMW trumped it big time with its color-changing Dee). Nevertheless, this is a close-to-production hatchback-ed sedan, not unlike today's Arteon, with an extra-long wheelbase courtesy its EV architecture. It should be a solid answer to the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6, and even if people obviously prefer SUVs now, VW says there is still a market for sedans. I know I'd probably prefer one." –Senior Editor, West Coast and Reviews, James Riswick Peugeot Inception concept View 12 Photos 4. Peugeot Inception "It's not often that show debuts surprise us. While Peugeot teased the Inception ahead of CES, its unveiling seemed almost incidental. But just look at this thing; it's like an electric French Mustang with someplace important to be. I don't buy into the stupid 'It's not a wheel!' thing that Peugeot CEO Linda Jackson described as providing a video-game-like drive experience, but that bit of silliness aside, this is a really promising design study. Give us more of these and fewer tall boxes, please." –Associate Editor Byron Hurd Afeela prototype from Sony Honda Mobility View 11 Photos 3. Afeela by Sony Honda “Ever since Sony showed off an impressively put-together concept car at CES a few years ago, IÂ’ve been anticipating the companyÂ’s next move. Apparently, that next move is “Afeela.” No, I donÂ’t love the name. The specs from SonyÂ’s original concept car give me hope that this prototype sportback (itÂ’s a hatchback!) will be fun to drive, though.

Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe is a green fun-machine we want to drive

Fri, 19 Apr 2013

Think back to January's Detroit Auto Show. Those of you that are fans of the Volkswagen brand, impressed with green technology or simply fall into the "diesel geek" category, will almost certainly remember VW's CrossBlue concept with its diesel/electric hybrid powertrain, seating for seven, and somewhat awkward crossover styling. It was an impressive piece of future tech, to be sure, though it left something to be desired in the, well, desirability department.
Here in Shanghai, VW has brought along a CrossBlue Coupe concept that would seem to include most of the goodness of the original, but flavored with more sport and style this time around.
The CrossBlue Coupe makes use of the same electric drive components as the larger three-row concept: two electric motors (front and rear) powered by a 9.8-kWh lithium-ion battery. However, where the original concept made use of a TDI four-cylinder, the Coupe substitutes a 295-horsepower, direct-injection, gasoline-burning V6.

Brazil contemplates safety exemption for VW Kombi as it goes out of production today [w/poll]

Tue, 31 Dec 2013

Brazil: the country of carnivals, indescribable beauty adjacent to abject poverty, Ayrton Senna and old Volkswagen models. Only they're not old - they're new, they're just based on old designs. The original Beetle continued production there long after it had been phased out elsewhere, but the original Kombi van has lasted much longer. That ends today, however, with the iconic VW Microbus ambling out of production on the last day of 2013.
VW kept making the van in Brazil with the original air-cooled 1.2-liter boxer four until 2005, after which the original design was updated with a 1.4-liter water-cooled engine. Today, however, it ultimately falls prey to safety regulations that mandate that all vehicles - no matter how old their design - need to have airbags and ABS, forcing Volkswagen do Brasil to cease production of the Microbus after a 56-year production run. But the latest word is that the Kombi (as it's presently known) could get a stay of execution - or at least a resurrection in short order.
According to reports, the Brazilian government is looking into granting the Type 2 Microbus an exemption from said safety regulations, reasoning that the van was designed long before the advent of airbags and ABS. If the measure goes through, the Kombi Last Edition (pictured above) could prove not to be the last at all. So what do you think, should the Microbus get an exemption from Brazilian safety regulations for nostalgia's sake? Vote in our poll below, then have your say in Comments.
