2003 Passat W8 Wagon Awd 4-motion 5spd Tiptronic Auto on 2040-cars
Saint Augustine, Florida, United States
2003 VW Passat W8 wagon with 4-motion all-wheel drive. Blue exterior with grey leather interior. 18" VW Phaeton wheels with top of the line 235/40/18 Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires with 1/2 -3/4 tread remaining.
Wife has new vehicle so the Passat has to go. Currently has around 118k miles on the ODO and runs great. Air conditioning blows cold and there are no mechanical issues with the car what so ever. I have recently, within the last several thousand miles had the ignition coils replaced (VW recall) and installed all new spark plugs. At around that same time I had the valve cover gaskets replaced and spark plug tube seals done due to a common issue of them leaking into the coil chamber. The serpentine belt was replaced (fun job) and the front torque strut mount upgraded to much better designed poly bushing approximately 4k miles ago. I replaced the brittle plastic pcv hoses with rubber vacuum lines. The headliner was starting to sag above the rear cargo area and that has been recovered in VW specific material within the last 6 months. Front brake pads replaced several thousand miles ago and have purchased the rear pads just have not found time to replace. Details on the car: This Passat was purchased around 5 years ago as a Certified VW with around 65,000 miles on the ODO from a VW dealer in Austin, Texas. I went through the research to find a Blue W8 wagon that had the VW recommended Cam Tensioners replaced and found this one had just been certified and came with a 2 year/24,000k mile extended warranty being that it was being sold through VW's certified program. The engine had been pulled and the cam tensioners replaced right before being put on their lot. I paid top dollar at that time because it was exactly what I was looking for even though it was going to be my wife's car. This sweet ride drives as good as it looks and drives like a dream due to the all-wheel drive and sure footedness on the road. Powered by a 4.0L 8 cylinder engine the W8 has 32 Valves with variable valve timing and produces 273 ft-lbs. of torque @ 2750 rpm and 270 hp @ 6000 rpm. The 4-motion and the German construction make this car drive very solid and corners as if it were on rails. Everything works on the car and I would list the overall condition as very good. The Bad: Roof needs to be painted as the clear coat has peeled. The rest of the car paint is in very good shape and looks great for a 10+ year old car. I have received a few quotes of around $500 to have this done from local auto body shops. Rear drivers side tail light has a crack in it. I am willing to listen to offers but not willing to give away. The car is also being listed locally |

Car companies may need to start curbing model proliferation
Mon, 17 Nov 2014Looking at the current automotive landscape, especially from German makers, you quickly get the impression that less definitely isn't more. BMW alone offers its 3 Series platform in practically every segment possible, including the regular sedan and 4 Series Gran Coupe, which would seem to be direct competitors. Porsche might be the winner, though, with 20 different variants of the 911 listed for sale on its US website. However, some of this model madness might be reaching an end as companies begin cutting back spending or shifting money to other priorities.
According to Yahoo Finance, the offerings from the German automakers are up 25 percent over the past three years to over 200 models in Europe. The peak is expected to come around 2018 at 230 separate vehicles, according to consulting company PwC.
Amazingly, BMW, which is among the poster children for this model explosion, might be changing its tune. "I'm sure there will be points in the future where we look at certain cars and say, 'Maybe we need to think differently now,'" said head of sales Ian Robertson in an interview, according to Yahoo Finance. The statement certainly sounds shocking coming from a company rumored to have 23 front-wheel-drive vehicles all using a single platform on the way.
VW beams in Star Trek stars to promote e-Golf EV
Tue, Oct 7 2014Volkswagen just set its e-mobility commercial phasers on stunning. The German automaker has cast Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock of Star Trek fame (i.e., actors William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy) in a new advertisement for its growing stable of electric vehicles. Even though it's in German, we think you can get the idea. VW went Hollywood and cast the two veteran actors in a futuristic-themed 45-second ad, which sees Shatner cruise up in the e-Golf (with a toothy Trek-fan kid in tow) while Nimoy rocks the XL1 and the Trek theme blares in the background. Forget for a moment that the kid in the commercial wasn't even born when Shatner started pitching for Priceline, let alone the original Trek series and just enjoy the wholesome good humor of Shatner saying that the electric powertrain is just like the one in a spaceship. If you've got any familiarity with Spock, you should be able to understand his punch line, too. Of course, if you'd rather your German vehicle advertisements were set in the Star Wars universe, we recommend clicking here. VW will bring the e-Golf to the states in November at a price of $35,445, about $6,500 higher than the Nissan Leaf's starting pricetag. You can see the new ad and a number of related behind-the-scenes videos (in English) below. Our Quick Spin of the E-up! are available here. This content is hosted by a third party. Rising aluminum costs cut into Ford's profit
Wed, Jan 24 2018When Ford reports fourth-quarter results on Wednesday afternoon, it is expected to fret that rising metals costs have cut into profits, even as rivals say they have the problem under control. Aluminum prices have risen 20 percent in the last year and nearly 11 percent since Dec. 11. Steel prices have risen just over 9 percent in the last year. Ford uses more aluminum in its vehicles than its rivals. Aluminum is lighter but far more expensive than steel, closing at $2,229 per tonne on Tuesday. U.S. steel futures closed at $677 per ton (0.91 metric tonnes). Republican U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is weighing whether to impose tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, which could push prices even higher. Ford gave a disappointing earnings estimate for 2017 and 2018 last week, saying the higher costs for steel, aluminum and other metals, as well as currency volatility, could cost the company $1.6 billion in 2018. Ford shares took a dive after the announcement. Ford Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks told analysts at a conference in Detroit last week that while the company benefited from low commodity prices in 2016, rising steel prices were now the main cause of higher costs, followed by aluminum. Shanks said the automaker at times relies on foreign currencies as a "natural hedge" for some commodities but those are now going in the opposite direction, so they are not working. A Ford spokesman added that the automaker also uses a mix of contracts, hedges and indexed buying. Industry analysts point to the spike in aluminum versus steel prices as a plausible reason for Ford's problems, especially since it uses far more of the expensive metal than other major automakers. "When you look at Ford in the context of the other automakers, aluminum drives a lot of their volume and I think that is the cause" of their rising costs, said Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting at auto consultancy LMC Automotive. Other major automakers say rising commodity costs are not much of a problem. At last week's Detroit auto show, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV's Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne reiterated its earnings guidance for 2018 and held forth on a number of topics, but did not mention metals prices. General Motors Co gave a well-received profit outlook last week and did not mention the subject. "We view changes in raw material costs as something that is manageable," a GM spokesman said in an email.
