2001 VW PASSAT 1.8T! THIS CAR IS BEING SOLD NO RESERVE! THE TOP BIDDER TAKES THIS CAR! This vehicle is the 2001 1/2 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8 Turbo. The car runs beautifully and has far lower miles than is typical for these cars. This car has leather interior, heated seats, power sunroof and an upgraded sound system with auxiliary input for your personal music device. This car comes with the valet key. Car and Driver wrote about this vehicle "The familiar 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes 20 more horsepower, thanks to increased turbo boost (10.2 psi rather than 8.4). That additional power combined with the shorter (numerically higher) gears for first through third in the standard five-speed manual is good for a half-second drop in the Passat GLS's 0-to-60 time. Our test car, equipped with the five-speed, hit 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. That bests four-cylinder mid-size competitors by two to three seconds and is roughly equal to competitors with V-6s and automatic powertrains. This despite a weight gain of about 150 pounds to a still-reasonable-for-the-class 3238. Torque steer is nonexistent. Chalk one up for the Audi-sourced multilink front suspension. More important--in the world outside the test track--is the 11 more pound-feet of torque the higher-boost turbo provides. Before the turbo starts spinning in earnest, the little 1.8-liter has its work cut out for it. Once the turbo segues into the power-delivery business, though, the GLS moves out with authority. So much so, in fact, that we wonder why anyone would pay the extra money for the optional 190-hp, 2.8-liter V-6. Also largely unchanged is the interior, which is fine by us. The '98 Passat set a new standard in the segment for materials quality and lovely little touches such as soft-return grab handles and heated seats. There are more baby steps along the upmarket trek for the interior. VW replaced the utterly useless, flimsy swing-out cup holders for two proper holes in the new center console. (Rejoice!) There are new bezels around the four analog gauges. They are, of course, shiny. Otherwise, the interior remains the same as always, with supportive seats, an elegant design, and roomy rear quarters. And all 20011/2 Passats come with a standard side-curtain airbag system. Expect normal wear and tear for the year and mileage. Volkswagen iBeetle gets integrated iPhone dock, little else
Fri, 19 Apr 2013Apple fans have been itching to see the tech giant flex the full muscle of its iOS operating system in an automotive infotainment system for years, which is why we turned all sorts of excited when we caught wind of the Volkswagen iBeetle. The machine is headed to the Shanghai Motor Show for a debut, and VW promised it would be one of the "first cars in the world to have a genuine integrative interface for the iPhone that was coordinated with Apple." Listen closely, and you can hear the contented sigh of a million wallets opening.
Go ahead and close those up, kids.
In reality, the iBeetle offers little more than a dash-mounted dock and a special app that shows a few vehicle functions, which is about as far from an infotainment revolution as you're likely to find. In fact, the setup is little more than a factory rehash of aftermarket items, and hardly worth a whole model debut at an international motor show. And that's to say nothing of the fact that Apple relishes in changing the shape and form of its darling handheld at every generation. Volkswagen better be prepared to keep pace with appropriate docking mechanisms for the upcoming iPhone 5S, 6, 6S, et al.
VW exec calls US ops a 'disaster'
Thu, 23 Jan 2014Today in the Tell Us How You Really Feel file we have Bernd Osterloh, head of Volkswagen AG's Group Works Councils and member of the company's supervisory board, labeling the company's US operations "a disaster." Why? Because Osterloh believes VW of America doesn't have the models it needs to be competitive here, hasn't been decisive enough about its plans and German higher-ups still don't understand the US market.
In truth, the top labor rep at the German conglomerate is echoing sentiments we've heard from VWoA executives for years, and there's been the same commentary from dealers: Germany doesn't pay enough attention to what the US market really wants. Even ex-VWoA CEO Stefan Jacoby, who preceded the recently departed Jonathan Browning, said early in his tenure that one of his tasks was to get his German bosses to start delivering what the US market demanded. New CEO Michael Horn is saying much the same thing seven years later, telling Sky News that it has to increase "the speed at which we bring new models to the market and innovation to the market."
Osterloh wants to get "more models" here, including a pickup truck, but we'd wonder if the economics have changed from when Jacoby said they'd need to sell 100,000 per year to make money. Osterloh also wants a decision on where the CrossBlue will be built. Although it looked as if the Chatanooga, TN plant would get the call, the Puebla, Mexico plant is still in the running because of lower operating costs. No matter what happens right now, Osterloh thinks the situation won't get better for another two years when revamped models arrive, but at least the company can start taking the steps for a better US future.
Porsche tops JD Power APEAL study for 12th time
Wed, Jul 27 2016JD Power's 2016 Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) study hasn't changed much this time around with Porsche coming in at No.1 for the 12th consecutive year, while BMW was close behind in second. Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz tied for third with Land Rover, Lexus, and Lincoln tied for No.5. The APEAL Study, according to JD Power, measures owners' level of excitement and emotional attachment across 77 parameters. Brands and cars are rated on a 1,000-point scale. The study found that new cars with modern safety features including low speed collision avoidance and blind spot monitoring have higher APEAL scores than vehicles without the features. The overall industry score increased from 798 to 801, which JD Power claims was helped by the launch of a variety of new vehicles. This year, 22 out of 30 new or redesigned cars received a higher score than the vehicle's respective segment average. Porsche is once again at the top of the list as the automaker's score increased by three points to 877. BMW outscored Jaguar to take second place with a score of 859, while the British automaker dropped three points from last year with 852 points. Volkswagen overtook Mini to become the top-ranked non-premium brand with 809 points, while the latter automaker trailed behind by one point. At the end of the scale, Smart came in at the very bottom for the second year in a row with a score of 745 points, which represents an increase of 62 points over last year. Fiat's score increased by six points to 755, but still confined the automaker to second-to-worst place for a consecutive year. Mitsubishi's score increased to 770, up from 755, to become the fourth-worst brand, while Jeep fell to third-worst with a decrease in seven points to 756. General Motors received six segment-level awards, followed by Hyundai with five, and BMW and VW earning four apiece. Surprise segment victories include the Chevrolet Camaro, which outscored the Dodge Challenger, and the Lexus RC which ranked above the BMW 4 and 3 Series.
