1996 Vw Passat Tdi 276,000 miles  5speed, AC, Sunroof, power everything

Since eBay doesn't permit "clickable" links anymore send me a message and I get you a link to 80+ photos

I’ve owned this Tdi for about 5 years and it’s been my daily driver for my 100 mile round trip to work. Averaging from about 45mpg to a more recent 40mph.

It starts every time and drives very well. Recent new tires and rims (less then 9 months) Shifts fine. Traded this off a family that had an autistic son, he did a number on the interior but I removed it and hand cleaned it…looks great although the header line is missing (see photos).

Since I’ve had it I’ve replaced

  • ·   Water Pump @ approx: 200K
  • ·      Timing belt, idler and tension pulley, serpentine: 230K
  • ·      Rotella 4W30 Synth oil every 7500K miles
  • ·      Fuel filter every 15K miles
  • ·      Shift linkage part about a year old
  • ·      Fixed foam from heater duct that increases heating (very warm in winter)
  • ·      Replace AC condenser twice (part in front by radiator) but have a small leak in system…doesn’t hold charge very long. Went this summer.
  • ·      Several glow plugs replaced around 230K

The reason I’m selling this is it’s now a 4th car in the family as my wife got anew one. Since it’s the oldest of our 3 used cars I made the hard decision to sell it. Due to the start of rust and the fact it needs some basic attention it seemed like the one to sell. This is a rock solid car and starts and will drive you to work 24/7 even in the dead of winter.

I’m a “car guy” which means I know this car inside and out and know how to service it…but it doesn’t mean it’s a museum piece either since it was my commuter.

Here are some negatives to consider:

  • ·      Clear coat has been pealing for small time.
  • ·      Reasonable imperfections on body for a 17-18 year old car including small dent, surface/bubble rust.
  • ·      Rear driver side window will not go down
  • ·      Front passenger side door doesn’t open from outside but does from inside
  • ·      A front driver window has come off the rails, which means it doesn’t go up or down without some “love”.
  • ·      I pulled the factory radio, as it wasn’t working well.
  • ·      The LCD on the center dial (dash) is starting to have some lines going out so the mileage is getting hard to read but you only have to stare at it for a minute to figure out that it’s currently at 275,913.
  • ·      Due to my style of driving (free way) the brakes don’t get much a work out which means they pulse from heat ups of the inorganic brakes. Therefor they currently  have a slightly pulse and I have an extra set of rotors I turn ever 6-9 months and swap out. The extra rotors are in great shape and come with it.
  • ·      Missing front parking lights…they fail and break easily. The aftermarket ones I bought failed and broke too…but you can get another set on ebay for $30 from china.
  • ·      After replacing the valve cover gasket at the last timing belt change it didn’t seem to get the greatest seal so there is some slight leakage around the valve cover gasket. Overall the engine is very clean.
  • ·      The radiator should be replaced soon but has been like this for well over a year…it never drips on the floor but you can smell it. I’m sure some bars-leak would help it along for another winter.
  • ·      The alarm system was getting angry a few years back so the relay was pulled so it would not give me a problem at the wrong time.

Here are some of the great things about this car…

  • ·      It will not die! Like most Tdi engines of this generation it’s proven to be indescribable. It starts, has good compression and hustles down the road.
  • ·      The AC system is solid and works great it just has a leak after the last time I replaced the condenser…it worked for about a week before it blew out the Freon so if you are not a AC DIY guy I’m sure a shop could have it going for close to nothing.
  • ·      The 5speed and clutch are in good shape.
  • ·      Drives straight down the road (doesn’t pull) but I did mean to get a front end alignment after putting $650 worth of rims and tires on it last spring…so it’s due.
  • ·      Extra rotors that I think I had turned already
  • ·      2 sets of keys, manuals and some Bentley stuff.

So who is this for?

Someone needing a high MPG highway commuter car, is a Vw Tdi guy or just a Vw guy in general that knows how to work on these. It’s far from perfect but a HIGHLY dependable daily driver…I just feel if I’m going to keep it I would need to put about $500-800 in it over the next year to get it to the quality that I want…but I’ve been dumping to much money in my two Volvos which are newer and also dependable (but have lots of fancy electronics to go wrong).

I know some Tdi guys that want this just for the engine but to build the engine for swaps in Vanagons and Jeeps…but I’m not wanting their low ball offer right now. This is a solid car for the right person and these are very desired within that community…demanding twice the price of a gas Passat of similar years.

The car is located in Delaware Ohio and I’m pretty much only available on evening and weekend until early December…then it gets a bit tighter to test drive it as my job increases. So call soon and get it now! I won’t meet you in a parking lot and I’m not interested in getting you at the airport!

Will it make it back to Anchorage, most likely yes...but who knows.

VW Sport Coupe Concept GTE 'marks beginning of a new design era' [w/video]

Mon, Mar 2 2015

You didn't think that Volkswagen was going to come to Geneva armed only with a bunch of European-market minivans and wagons, did you? Of course not. Last week VW gave us our first glimpse at a new show car for the Swiss auto expo, and here it is in full: the Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE. Set to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show this week, the Sport Coupe is envisioned as a successor to the current CC, but beyond previewing a specific model, this concept showcases a new design language that's set to characterize all new VWs to come. And judging by how good it looks from the images in the slideshow above, that could prove to be a very good thing indeed. The concept strikes us as the sleekest iteration yet of the company's flexible MQB architecture that already underpins vehicles as small as the Golf and as large as the new Skoda Superb. It's larger than the current CC in every dimension but height, and pushes the wheels further out on a longer wheelbase. And with a liftgate at the back instead of a trunk, it strikes a form more similar to the Audi A7 than the Passat-based CC. As with recent past concepts, VW has taken the opportunity to showcase its hybrid powertrain technologies, fitting the Sport Coupe with a plug-in hybrid system that couples a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 to a pair of electric motors and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The internal combustion engine drives 295 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels, while an electric motor integrated into the gearbox contributes another 54 hp and a second one kicks in 114 hp at the rear. Juiced by a lithium-ion battery housed in the center tunnel and offering all-wheel traction, the combined output of 374 hp is said to be capable of propelling the concept to 62 miles per hour in five seconds flat and on to a top speed of 155 mph. It can travel for 32 miles on electric power alone and on to an overall range of 745 miles, netting the equivalent of 118 miles per gallon on the European cycle. Inside, the four-seat cabin is laden with digital displays: there's a 12.3-inch unit – dominated by the speedo and power meter – in place of a conventional instrument cluster. The center stack incorporates a 10.1-inch infotainment display, and the rear-seat passengers have access to another 12.3-inch display at the back of the center console and another pair of 10.1-inch displays in the seatbacks.

VW confirms Golf GTD diesel coming to US for 2016

Wed, 03 Jul 2013

Part of the Volkswagen Golf recipe that has helped the car sell more than 30 million units in just under 40 years is the number of variants in which the hatchback is offered. Building on that range here in the US, Automotive News is reporting that we will finally be getting the sporty Golf GTD, likely as a 2016 model. It's the GTD, you'll recall, that crosses the performance abilities of the venerable GTI with a powerful and fuel-efficient diesel engine.
After speaking with Andreas Valbuena, Volkswagen product manager for the Golf, AN not only says that the GTD will for sale in the US in a couple years, it also estimates a baseline price of around $27,000, which would place it between the current pricing for the GTI and the Golf R. The GTD is launching in Europe this summer, but we won't be getting the seventh-generation Golf in the US for another year. The news about the performance diesel model isn't entirely unexpected - VW officials have been hinting at it for at least a year now, going so far as to import a sixth-generation model for media test drives on US soil, a task we happily took them up on last year.
The Mk VII GTD uses VW's 2.0-liter TDI engine with output increased to 184 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, allowing the car to sprint to 60 miles per hour in about seven seconds while returning more than 40 mpg in highway driving. We can't wait.

Volkswagen debuts MkVII-based diesel Golf GTD

Thu, 21 Feb 2013

As Volkswagen prepares for the launch of the seventh-generation Golf, it continues to show off some of the car's different variants. With the standard Golf and the ultra-efficient BlueMotion Concept out of the way, now we're finally starting to see some of the sportier versions planned for the hatchback. Confirmed for a debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen has now given us our first glimpse at the Golf GTD.
Just think of the GTD as a diesel version of the GTI with all the handling and styling upgrades, and then add a torquey engine to the equation. (We had the chance to sample the current GTD over the summer, so click here to read more.) To go with the new body style, VW also gave the GTD a new TDI engine consisting of a similar turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter inline-four layout but with an output of 184 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque - that's an increase of 14 hp and 22 lb-ft over the current GTD. That's a pretty good oomph, but the GTD won't be setting any acceleration records with VW quoting a 0-62 mile per hour time of 7.5 seconds thanks to the car's 3,036-pound curb weight.
The styling of the MkVII Golf lends itself quite well to the more aggressive body kit found on the GTD (and likely matching the GTI). The new front fascia and blacked-out grille give the GTD a sporty look up front, while 17-inch sport wheels, rocker panel extensions and smoked LED taillights finish off the visual changes. The GTD will only be offered in three exterior colors: Tornado Red, Black and Pure White. As expected, the interior gets the plaid seat inserts and flat-bottomed sport steering wheel, but the car also gets stainless steel pedals, a black headliner, ambient cabin lighting and a specific gauge cluster readout.
