1960 AMAG Montage Suisse Karmann Ghia Coupe restored with only 4,000 miles on new drivetrain! Body and build tag are matching numbers.
Here is a bit of history on this amazing vehicle. From 1956 through mid-year 1960, 1098 Karmann Ghia motor cars were assembled in Switzerland by hand from knock-down kits at the AMAG factory. They are the rarest of all Karmann Ghia cars and were build to a very high standard in the same factory that Porsches were assembled. This car has been verified by the Birth Certificate from the Volkswagen AutoMuseum in Germany. Only approximately 150 of the non-lowlight Ghias were built in Switzerland in 1960, and this I believe is one of three AMAG Karmann Ghias in the United States. You can research these cars on the internet by searching under "AMAG Montage Suisse Karmann Ghia."
The car was originally brought to San Diego, and later sold to a gentleman in Maryland in 2007. The car was resprayed in its Pacific Blue and Cream colors and a brand new 2100CC stroker motor and drivetrain was installed. The prior owner used this car primarily for parades where it was towed. So the actual miles on the motor is approximately 1,000 miles. When I purchased this car, an extensive amount of detail work was undertaken to bring this car up to my standards. Every mechanical part on this car was inspected, with the following work done.
Converted to 12 volt by the prior owner, and all instruments now working. New brakes, Bilstein heavy duty shocks, hubcaps, new wiper motor, new blades, rebuilt clock, correct Sapphire I radio, Hirschmann antenna, new horns, new steering wheel, new Sew Fine period correct interior and carpet, custom Cocomats, shift knob, NOS Hella lighting all around including red rear fog light and clear backup light, detailed engine bay, new drive pulley system, new windshield and so many other odds and ends that would take too long to mention. The car also comes with the very rare Hazet VW tool kit that fits in the spare tire in the front bonnet.
This is a ZERO rust car that has NEVER been in an accident, which is quite rare. I would rate the paint job about a 9 out of 10 due to a couple of very small touch-ups. In addition, once I found out how rare this car was, I had the entire undercarriage cleaned and shutzed with 3M product to protect it for the next century. Seat belts were also installed for safety reasons, and all of the work was done by Dave Ellis, who has worked on antique VW cars for over 30 years, while the body work was done by Skip McCabe in Mudelein, IL. Skip is famous for his concours work on Ferrari and other exotic cars. Skip also installed the interior to a very high standard and completely detailed the vehicle.
This car is for sale locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. A negotiable deposit must be paid within 3 days of your successful purchase. If you are from outside the United States, you will solely be responsible for taking care of all of the paperwork to import this car. This car is in amazing condition, but is sold without any actual or implied warranty. Please do not bid on this car unless you are serious about completing the transaction. Vehicle is available for inspection in the north suburbs of Chicago, where it is garaged. The car is garaged a block away from the mechanic, and he will be able to give you his honest appraisal of this car if you would like to speak to him. You may call me at 847-312-5300 if you have any questions.
Again, this is a very rare opportunity to own a piece of VW history! You may never see another one in this condition.

VW will reportedly offer cash to cheated diesel car drivers
Sun, Nov 8 2015If you're feeling burned by Volkswagen's decision to cheat on diesel emissions tests, you might get some compensation for your troubles. Sources for The Truth About Cars understand that VW will launch a "TDI Goodwill Program" that compensates diesel car drivers with cash in the form of prepaid cards. In the US, you'd get both a $500 universal card as well as a VW-only card worth $500 to $750. The automaker isn't confirming details just yet, but it tells the New York Times that it's planning an announcement on Monday. Dealers also tell the newspaper that they're aware of a program in the works, although they don't know the specifics. It may not include the expanded range of cars reportedly tainted by the scandal, though, since VW is denying claims that it cheated with some models. This isn't the only olive branch VW has been offering: it's been handing out deals to existing owners willing to hop into new vehicles, and there are more discounts than usual across the board. However, the goodwill effort would represent the first instance of VW directly compensating drivers who'd previously thought they were getting an eco-friendly machine. This isn't going to make up for years of unnecessary pollution, but it may represent the company's best hope of holding on to customers. MotorWeek recalls the glory days of the VW Cabriolet
Sun, Apr 26 2015Remember the car that the rich, very attractive girl in your high school got on her 16th birthday? Was it a Volkswagen Cabriolet? But time marches on, and the boxy convertibles have attained a certain quirky coolness in the modern day. MotorWeek weighs in with a look at the 1989 model in the latest entry in its Retro Review series. MotorWeek actually comes away rather impressed with the Cabriolet, especially its handling. The show doesn't even complain about the big roll bar over the center of the car that has always looked more like a basket handle than a safety aid. Host John Davis must have enjoyed driving the droptop VW, too – despite his very '80s windbreaker and polo shirt ensemble, he was sporting quite the tan in this clip. The small, inexpensive convertible segment has largely disappeared today, but as MotorWeek shows by comparing the Cabriolet to the Chrysler LeBaron and Chevrolet Cavalier, it wasn't always this way. Take a ride in VW's droptop to see how it scores.
Lamando is Chinese for VW Jetta CC [w/video]
Sun, 31 Aug 2014Volkswagen is not messing around when it characterizes its new MQB architecture as modular. It's already underpinning the VW Golf, Audi A3, Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia, and will soon form the basis for many more. And here is the latest.
Unveiled at the Chengdu Motor Show in China this weekend is the new Volkswagen Lamando, a four-door coupe similar in size to a Jetta but with the svelter roofline of the larger Passat-based CC to go after the Mercedes-Benz CLA. It's essentially the production version of the New Midsize Coupe concept that previewed its arrival at the Beijing Motor Show this past April, and will be built locally for local consumption by VW's joint venture with SAIC.
Power comes from either a 1.4- or 2.0-liter turbo four mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, with an equivalent price tag below $30,000. Whether this or any similar vehicle ever arrives in North American showrooms remains to be seen, but we'll be watching to find out. In the meantime you can scope it out in the trippy video below and the photos in the gallery above.
