After 3+ years in the family we are selling our 2002 ALH Jetta. This car is not a "normal" used car. The body and interior are the nicest you will find for a 2002 with 146k miles. Not one door ding or dent. No curb rash on any of the rims. The previous owner modified it significantly, in some respects he made it into a show car. Since buying it I raised the suspension back towards normal, put on less aggressive rims, replaced the alternator, battery and injection (fuel) pump all in the past year. I have personally changed the oil with Rotella T6 every 5k miles since buying the car at 110k miles. A partial list of modifications is as follows:
1. Complete GLI interior, no rips/tears in any of the seats front or rear.
2. Injectors, DG race pipe, Omni downpipe, Upsolute chip, VR6 clutch, KYB adjustable Shocks/Struts, Eibachs, Drilled/slotted rotors front and rear, 0.681 5th gear, Ventectomy.
3. Shiny bits including trunk plate, trunk struts, hood strut, dead pedal, other pedals, shifter.
4. Windows have mild tint, I have never been pulled over for a tint issue or had it mentioned in 35k miles of driving.
5. This car is making about 145hp/270tq, vs. stock of 90hp/155tq. It will lay rubber in 1st and 2nd if you floor it.
Other recent maintenance includes:
1. Clutch at 113k
2. Brakes (pads and rotors) at 110k
3. Rear bumper repainted due to backing into my wife's car in the driveway one day at 140k
4. Front air dam replaced due to car being too low before at 135k
5. Radio antennae replaced due to age and cracking rubber
6. Transmission oil replaced at 130k
And then of course there is the bad news. It does have 146k miles, it is 11 years old. 3rd and 4th gears are kind of notchy, but all gears work with no grinding. The suspension squeaks a bit. If the state where you live aggressively tests/checks 2002 diesels for emissions, it will fail due to EGR system being removed. It passed inspection and had a sticker the whole time we were in Tennessee and Louisiana. It has a constant check engine light because of all the modifications.
Ultimately this is a car for VW lovers or lover's of modified cars. My wife drove it as a commuter car for a year and eventually decided that it was too intense for her liking. Now she's driving a bone stock Acura TL and is happy as a clam. It really does get 50mpg at 70mph and better than that at 50-60mph. Around town we generally got about 44mpg. My personal record was 821 miles on 16.4 gallons of gas. I do respond to questions, so please ask. I will not end the auction early for a lowball offer.

CARB found another emissions-defeating device, this time from Audi
Mon, Nov 7 2016The California Air Resources Board has discovered another emissions-cheating device on an Audi earlier this summer, reports German newspaper Bild am Sonntag. The device is different from the software found in the VW Group's diesel-powered engines, as it alters the way the cars' automatic transmission shifts. The latest device, according to Bild am Sonntag, measures how far the cars' steering wheel is being turned. If the wheel is turned less than 15 degrees, indicating that the vehicle is being tested in laboratory conditions, a program in cars with certain automatic transmissions changes the way the gearbox shifts. The change in the transmission allows the engine to produce less carbon dioxide than when driving in normal conditions. When the wheel is turned more than 15 degrees, the program automatically turns off, claims Bild am Sonntag. The paper reports that Audi took the software out of its vehicles, which was used in both diesel- and gasoline-powered vehicles in Europe and the US, earlier this May after CARB discovered the program on one of the automaker's older cars. Several engineers that were connected with the emissions-cheating device have already been suspended, reports Bild am Sonntag. As the German newspaper points out, the device, which is fitted to certain Audis with an automatic transmission, is different from the cheat devices found on the automaker's 3.0-liter TDI turbodiesel V6 engine and Volkswagen's 2.0-liter turbodiesel motor, even those were also designed to beat emissions tests. The 3.0-liter engine is found in the Audi Q7, Volkswagen Touareg, and Porsche Cayenne models. Audi didn't immediately respond to our request for a comment. Which will Dieselgate hurt more, Volkswagen or US diesels?
Tue, Sep 22 2015The most damning response to the news Volkswagen skirted emissions regulations for its diesel models may have actually come from the Los Angeles Times. On Saturday, the Times published an editorial titled "Did Volkswagen cheat?" The answer was undoubtedly yes. When you can't drive down Santa Monica Boulevard without seeing an average of one VW TDI per block, the following words are pretty striking: "... Americans should be outraged at the company's cynical and deliberate efforts to violate one of this country's most important environmental laws." VW has successfully cultivated a strong, environmentally conscious reputation for its TDI Clean Diesel technology, especially in states where emissions are strictly controlled. A statement like that is like blood all over the opinion section of the Sunday paper. The effect on VW's business, even Germany's financial health, was already felt Monday when the company's shares plummeted 23 percent in morning trading. The statement on Sunday from VW CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn says "trust" three times. That probably wasn't enough in nine sentences. Writers over the weekend have compared VW's crisis to one at General Motors 30 years ago, when it was the largest seller of diesel-powered passenger cars until warranty claims over an inadequate design and ill-informed technicians effectively pulled the plug on the technology at GM. In a sense, VW is in the same boat as GM because it has fired a huge blow into its own reputation and that of diesels in passenger cars. And just as automakers like Jaguar Land Rover, BMW and, ironically, GM, were getting comfortable with it again in the US. VW of America was already knee-deep in its other problems this year. Its core Jetta and Passat models are aging and it needs to wait more than a year for competitive SUVs that American buyers want. The TDIs were the only continuous bright spot in the line and on the sales charts. Even as fuel prices fell and buyers shunned hybrids, VW managed to succeed with diesels and show that Americans actually care about and accept the technology again. Fervent TDI supporters might actually lobby for that maximum $18 billion fine to VW. I've personally convinced a number of people to look at a TDI instead of a hybrid. Perhaps not so much for stop-and-go traffic, but I know buyers who liked the idea that a TDI drove like a normal car and wasn't packed with batteries.
VW readying CC Shooting Brake?
Mon, 11 Feb 2013This was bound to happen. Volkswagen's relentless drive for big volume has the brand mining seemingly every niche it can find for additional sales worldwide. And with its CLS Shooting Brake, fellow countryman Mercedes-Benz has already shown that a wagon based off of a "four-door coupe" can look dead sexy and command extra dollars. So it follows that the Volkswagen CC (whose existence is all but directly attributable to the success of the original CLS sedan) will also get a load-lugging variant. That's according to the UK's Autocar, which notes that the five-door will come in the CC's next generation.
According to the report, the next CC will be available in front and all-wheel drive variants with the usual assortment of gas and diesel four-cylinders found in the Wolfsburg empire, with the possibility of a gas plug-in hybrid model, too. The rakish estate will ride atop VW's MQB architecture, a shorter variant of which is also found underneath the new Golf. The scalable chassis is set to spread like kudzu throughout the company's lineup, but the CC probably won't happen until after the launch of the next European-market Passat in 2015.
Will we get it in North America? Hard to say. Volkswagen sells the standard CC saloon here, but not in particularly large numbers, and when the company moved to a North American-specific Passat, it dumped the wagon variant. The traditional VW estate apparently continues to pick up sales momentum abroad, however, making the CC Shooting Brake a seemingly natural fit for buyers who still want the utility of a two-box form but can afford to sacrifice a bit of cargo room in the name of style.
