Host Jonathon Buckley interviews EV West owner Michael Bream and test drives a converted 1969 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. What drives EV West to electrify classic cars may surprise some. "We're not doing this because we're the hardcore environmentalists or we're trying to save the earth," says Bream. "If we can't at least double your horsepower and torque, we won't touch the car." In fact, EV West brings a race-tested performance pedigree to back up those boasts. The company competed in the electric class at Pikes Peak, has run through the desert at Baja, and in general has successfully proved that battery-electric vehicles can compete at a high level. Hyundai tops VW and Buick in China, survey says
Wed, Apr 15 2015You may be aware of the long-time competition in China between Volkswagen and Buick, but another brand apparently should be in that conversation too: Hyundai. In a recently published annual consumer survey, the Korean company actually took the top spot to beat out its German and American rivals in second and third, respectively. The results were part of the China Brand Power Index that interviewed 11,500 people around the nation and was paid for by the country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. While Hyundai proved popular with voters, its sales haven't necessarily shown that yet. According to Bloomberg, the brand had falling numbers in China for the first quarter of the year. Even Ford outsold the South Korean automaker in the same period, despite scoring lower on the survey. Meanwhile, Audi ranked as the populace's favorite luxury brand, which is hardly a surprise given the Four Rings' strong sales in China. In January alone the automaker saw a 15-percent boost in volume there. Parent company VW's strong performance was somewhat more surprising, though. State media severely criticized the German automaker in March, and customers protested last year for the allegedly poor handling of a recall.
Top Gear drag races VW Golf R against McLaren 675LT and Porsche 911
Thu, Apr 7 2016Top Gear's latest quarter-mile drag race in the collects three very different performance vehicles: the 296-horsepower Volkswagen Golf R, 424-hp Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, and 666-hp McLaren 675LT. While each of these cars sit near the top of their segment, they each come from totally different rungs of the sports car price ladder. Spoiler alert, the Golf R doesn't win. But the final results illustrate the diminishing returns of price and performance. For example, the McLaren is only about a second quicker than the Porsche to 60 miles per hour, but the 675LT costs over 2.5 times more that the GTS. Related Video:
