2000 Volkswagen Jetta Vr6 on 2040-cars

We bought this car from a towing company for our daughter to go to college with. It had a bad motor and a clear title. The towing company told us a bit about the history of the car. It was purchased used by a single mom. Shortly after she bought it, the top end of the motor seized because of a lack of oil and the timing chain broke. The cause was the oil plug was stripped out and was leaking oil. The lady stopped paying on the loan and the bank repossessed it. The towing company was hired by the bank to pick it up and bring it to their impound yard where the bank eventually came out and deemed the car not worth repairing and gave it to the towing company for payment. The bank wrote on the title "scrap". When we went to change the "clean" title to our name, the state changed it to a salvage title because of the word "scrap" being written on it. They said that is the only thing they can do. So, this car was branded because of a single word being written on the title. It was NOT accident damaged. We really didn't care to much because we figured by the time our daughter got finished with it, it would probably be ready for the bone yard anyway. So the work began. The car had 122xxx miles on it when we bought it and we started out with finding another motor for it. The donor motor had 92,098 miles on it and came from a car that was in a rear end accident. The new motor was completely gone over by a certified mechanic and a few recommended things were replace. Spark plugs, spark plug wires, alternator was rebuilt, new accessory belt and tensioner, oil filter, air filter, oil, and water pump. We were going to put in a new clutch while the motor was out but our mechanic said the clutch looked new and was recently replace. No need to put another new one in.  The new motor was put in. Next the car got all new wheel bearings all the way around. New brake discs front and back. Ceramic brake pads. New springs front and back, new shocks in the rear, new struts in the front. Brand new high end Good Year tires all the way around. Remind you that this car was for our daughter and all the parts replaced on this car were of high end and not the cheap stuff. Two new parking brake cables, new muffler, new front end ball joints, new steering outer ball joints, new sway bar bushings, new battery, new cabin filter and new wiper blades and a fresh four wheel alignment. Thousands of dollars later and we finally got the car on the road. Now comes the bad part. Our daughter, who knew it was a standard transmission and was willing to learn how to drive it, hated it. I had her out in the car several times and a standard transmission was simply not for her. College was starting and she needed a car ASAP so we went and bought her another Jetta with an automatic trans and off she went. We've had this car for almost two years now and we put only about 2k miles on it. It needs to go and we are going to take a big loss. I'm starting the bidding at $2500 with no reserve. More about the car. It has some minor dents and scratches in it. The A/C system works great but a seal in the A/C pump is leaking and the freon leaks out over time. Mechanic said to change the pump and all will be fine. The second problem we are having is the check engine light. Our mechanic says the code is emissions and diagnosing it farther, it comes down to a small in line vacuum pump not vacuuming down the fuel tank. It"s working intermittently and needs to be replaced. One of the headlight adjusters is not working properly. These things were going to be fixed but when we decided to buy another car for our daughter, all work stopped on this one as we knew we were going to get shafted on it. The car is being auctioned off just the way it sits. We are not going to put another dime into it. Our guess is that we have a little over $5k into it. PLease feel free to ask questions and come test drive it. More pictures will be posted shortly. Actually, we are kind of glad our daughter didn't take this car. With the six cylinder engine in it, this thing is a fast little car. Thanks for looking. The two pictures with the hood open is minutes after the roll back dropped the car off at our house after we purchased it. Just uploaded several new pictures taken of the car minutes ago. It is loaded with climate control, sun roof, P/S, P/W. P/locks, rain sensing windshield wipers, 5 speed, cruise, tilt wheel, leather interior, heated seats, heated and power mirrors. rear trunk spoiler, remote entry, and more. I just can't think of all of them. Car is located in zip 19510.

Get ready to Camino-ize your fourth-generation VW Jetta with this kit

Tue, 05 Aug 2014

Inexpensive, small pickup trucks used to be everywhere in the US, whether they were from Japanese brands like Datsun or Toyota, the truly weird Subaru Brat or even from Europe with the Volkswagen Caddy based on the Golf. These days that market has completely disappeared, but if you're willing to pick up some tools to build your own, there's a company out there bringing the Caddy back as a kit for the Jetta.
Mark Smith knows a thing about building a vehicle at home. He has over two decades in the DIY-car business as a co-founder of Local Motors and the company that became Factory Five Racing. His latest venture is Smyth Performance and already offers a mid-engine, VW-based kit called the G3F. His new product, though, started as a fluke. "I just wanted a shop truck," said Smith to Autoblog. He already had a Ford F-450 but found that he was driving around with the bed empty most of the time. The result was a pickup truck based on the fourth-generation Jetta that he dubbed the Ute.
The kit retails for $3,500 and ships in three, big boxes, and it's designed to be built and painted in a weekend. Buyers get fiberglass exterior panels, a fiberglass rear window surround, sliding rear window, an aluminum reinforced bed with a tubular steel subframe, taillights, a fully functional steel tailgate, and other parts. In the end, you get a vehicle with a six-foot bed and a payload of around 700-750 pounds. The Ute maintains all of the factory suspension, fuel tank and emissions equipment and requires just a few cuts in the body to complete. "We did a modern Caddy," admits Smith.

2014 VW Golf brings storied hatchback's seventh generation to US

Wed, 27 Mar 2013

The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf in US-specification officially debuts at the 2013 New York Auto Show. The new model is the first VW in the States to ride on the company's MQB architecture, and as such, it makes use of plenty of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel to keep weight down. All told, the new shell is 51 pounds lighter than the outgoing generation, despite the fact that the finished car is a full 2.2 inches longer and .5 inches wider than the 2013 model.
Buyers can expect to find a base model powered by a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (blue car above) with 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. That means the powerplant delivers the same horsepower as the old naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder while weighing less and producing seven extra pound-feet of torque. TDI (silver car above) buyers, meanwhile, will enjoy a new 2.0-liter turbo diesel four-cylinder mill. VW says the engine yields 10 more horsepower than the old lump, which means the Golf TDI now boasts 150 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.
GTI (red car above) buyers will now get their hands on a revised 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with approximately 210 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque - Volkswagen hasn't finalized power numbers for that machine. We're happy to see that the GTI still features its trademark plaid seats. Volkswagen says the new Golf and GTI will go on sale as a 2015 model, but doesn't say when the car will actually hit dealerships.

2018 Buick Regal TourX vs. wagon competitors: How it compares on paper

Wed, Jan 31 2018

To the great joy of auto enthusiasts nationwide, wagons are back! Well, at least there's a few more of them. The latest is the 2018 Buick Regal TourX, which we just had our first drive of and found to actually be quite good with pleasant handling, solid power and plenty of space. But, how does the TourX compare to other cladded wagons? Well, let's dive into the specs and fire up the ol' spreadsheet maker for Buick Regal TourX vs Subaru Outback vs Audi A4 Allroad vs VW Alltrack vs Volvo V60 Cross Country. True, some are from mainstream brands and others are from luxury marques, but Buick straddles both realms, so it's appropriate to look at them all. Of course, there's more to these cars than just the numbers, but they're still important, and in the case of this class of crossover-aping wagons, can vary more than you'd expect. So check out the specs in the chart below, which are followed by more analysis and photos of each. Discover and compare other wagons and crossovers with our Car Finder and Compare tools. Engines and Transmissions When comparing powertrains, the Buick is far-and-away the winner as far as torque is concerned, and is in a nearly three-way tie for horsepower. Its 295 pound-feet of torque is 22 lb-ft more twist than the next-most-grunty Audi A4 Allroad. And in regards to power, the Buick's 250-horsepower engine is only down 6 hp to the most-powerful Subaru and its optional naturally aspirated flat-six, and just 2 hp less than the Audi. At the bottom of the pack is the Subaru Outback with the standard naturally aspirated flat-four, which only makes 174 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. That may not seem too bad compared with the VW Golf Alltrack, which only makes 170 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque, but the VW is much lighter by between 200 and 300 pounds. Transmission-wise, there's quite a bit of variation in the group. The Regal TourX and the Volvo V60 Cross Country rely on eight-speed automatics, all Outbacks use CVTs, and the Alltrack and Allroad have dual-clutch automated manual transmissions with six and seven gears, respectively. But for people that want to shift for themselves, the only option is the Volkswagen, which offers a traditional six-speed manual transmission on the Golf Alltrack. Cargo and Interior Space One of the main reasons to buy a wagon is for the body style's large cargo capacity. And for the most space for things and stuff, you'll want to check out the Subaru and the Buick.
