1989 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 16V Helios Edition

Up for auction is my 1989 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 16V “Helios Edition.” I recently acquired this vehicle but no longer have the garage space so I need to sell it. This is an excellent example of the special Helios edition GLI, one of only 1500 made. The Helios package consisted of special paint, color matched BBS wheels, power windows/locks/seats, and a sunroof. This vehicle has a clean AutoCheck with no reported damage or accidents. This is a German built car and based on its VIN, the car was manufactured in March of 1989. There were only two options available on the Helios GLI, cruise control and ABS. This car was ordered with the optional cruise but not ABS. The car is a great candidate for restoration with minor rust (included in pictures) and runs and drives. This GLI would be a great addition to any VW enthusiast’s garage. Overall this is a great project and is a very solid example of an MKII GLI. I have included a number of pictures as well as links to several YouTube videos of the car running and driving.  I also have a bucket of trim pieces as well as some miscellaneous spare parts which will come with the car.  This vehicle is also for sale locally so I do reserve the right to cancel auction if it sells. This vehicle is being sold as-is.

Condition Notes:

-New tires, starter, battery, distributor, timing belt, radiator, and ball joints.

-Both front power seats work.

-Car shifts into all 5 gears and into reverse, it does however have a slight grind when shifting into 3rd gear.

-The car is somewhat bouncy and needs new strut mounts installed, included with the car.

-Only one of the power windows works currently, the driver’s side rear.

-Sunroof opens and shuts, newer seal and does not leak.

-The windshield and seal need to be replaced; there is a large crack in it. I have washed the car a number of times and it does not leak though.

-The hood has some dents and paint that is faded and chipping, see picture.

-Horn does not work.

-Heater only blows on high, AC does not blow cold

-Drivers side mirror glass is missing

-Body does have dings, dents, and scratches. Paint on roof and trunk is oxidized.

-Power steering pump leaks fluid around the reservoir, may need new lines or to be replaced.

-No radio or speakers.

-Missing headliner.

German carmakers recall 630,000 diesel vehicles in Europe

Fri, Apr 22 2016

Mercedes, Opel, Porsche, and Volkswagen will recall over 630,000 cars in Europe, according to reports Friday. No diesel car has been able to get under the legal emissions limit in real-world driving, according to a German government investigation. While only Volkswagen Group has been using a specific "defeat device", other carmakers have been playing with their exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems. Depending of the manufacturer, the systems have been cut off at a certain temperature. In a specific test cycle the systems operate to fulfill the legal requirements, but in everyday use the limits are exceeded. According to the magazine Der Spiegel, the supplier Bosch is behind this programming and has provided it to all German automakers. The mentioned carmakers have announced recalls, but many other manufacturers are also mentioned by name in the report, including Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Dacia, Fiat, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar, Jeep, Land Rover, Nissan, Renault, and Suzuki. PSA Group, which produces Peugeot, Citroen, and DS cars, declared yesterday that its offices were raided following an emissions investigation. My year in EVs: 8 electrics that are changing the car industry

Wed, Dec 1 2021

The year 2021 will go down as an inflection point in the auto industry’s transition to electric vehicles. It's when many much-anticipated models became reality. No longer sketches or sketchy prototypes, electric vehicles appeared from all corners with everything from the Lucid Air to Ford Mustang Mach-E changing how we think about transportation. I managed to drive a lot of them, and as I went through my notes, I realized IÂ’ve got a mini memoir of the seminal EVs of 2021. HereÂ’s my take on eight of them. Hummer EV Easily the most over-the-top EV I tested this year. The 1,000-hp super truck lived up to the hype with its domineering presence, stupendous power and simply being a reincarnated Hummer. I took it for a short spin on- and off-road at the General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford, Mich., and was impressed with the airy cabin, removable sky panels and expansive touchscreens. Yes, I crab walked, which felt like steering a pontoon boat, though I can see why it would be useful. Lucid Air Dream Performance The most beautiful sedan I tested all year, EV or otherwise. Unlike the futuristic Mercedes EQS — which is quite attractive — LucidÂ’s car is a blend of mid-century modern interior aesthetics and classic European exterior styling. When I walked up for my test drive, someone who IÂ’m pretty sure was comedian Jon Lovitz was sitting inside and taking it all in. As it sat in the valet of a hotel in a wealthy suburban enclave north of Detroit, the Lucid drew more attention than any of the Mercedes, Cadillacs or Lexus models passing by. The driving experience was enveloping. Starting at $169,000 for the Performance model (reservations are closed), the Lucid I sampled packed 1,111 hp and 471 miles of range. From the precise steering to the comfortable suspension, the dynamics were spot-on. It's a formidable product, and all the more impressive given itÂ’s LucidÂ’s first. Chevy Bolt EV The Bolt was the most pleasant surprise for me. It handled well, offered low-to-the-ground hot hatch dynamics and the steering was dialed-in. Adding a crossover variant for the new generation was a smart play. On a summer morning where I went to a first drive of the Ford Bronco at an off-road course, my hour-long commute in the Bolt was an enjoyable appetizer.  The Bolt was also my biggest disappointment due to its extensive recalls for fire risk. Ironically, I had the Bolt in my driveway when the initial recall went out for the previous generation (2017-19).

VW beams in Star Trek stars to promote e-Golf EV

Tue, Oct 7 2014

Volkswagen just set its e-mobility commercial phasers on stunning. The German automaker has cast Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock of Star Trek fame (i.e., actors William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy) in a new advertisement for its growing stable of electric vehicles. Even though it's in German, we think you can get the idea. VW went Hollywood and cast the two veteran actors in a futuristic-themed 45-second ad, which sees Shatner cruise up in the e-Golf (with a toothy Trek-fan kid in tow) while Nimoy rocks the XL1 and the Trek theme blares in the background. Forget for a moment that the kid in the commercial wasn't even born when Shatner started pitching for Priceline, let alone the original Trek series and just enjoy the wholesome good humor of Shatner saying that the electric powertrain is just like the one in a spaceship. If you've got any familiarity with Spock, you should be able to understand his punch line, too. Of course, if you'd rather your German vehicle advertisements were set in the Star Wars universe, we recommend clicking here. VW will bring the e-Golf to the states in November at a price of $35,445, about $6,500 higher than the Nissan Leaf's starting pricetag. You can see the new ad and a number of related behind-the-scenes videos (in English) below. Our Quick Spin of the E-up! are available here. This content is hosted by a third party.
