Let me start off by saying that I pride myself in being ABSOLUTELY honest and straighforward when dealing on eBay.  I've been jerked around before and HATE people who do that kind of thing.  This is meant to be a laid back, no pressure sale of a car that I LOVE and am not particularly excited about selling...

Up for sale is my 2009 VW GTI.  The car has been garaged for the last 2 years and is in excellent condition.  I have always driven the car very carefully and have NEVER abused it in any way, as I do not believe in trashing beautifully designed machines, ha ha.  It has barely been driven in the last year and a half, as I was able to walk or ride a bike to work.  The car is mechanically sound and has nothing wrong with it other than a few MINOR cosmetic things, which I'll describe below.

Minor cosmetic flaws:

1. Right after I got it in 2010, like a jackass I backed into a pole in a parking lot at about 0.5 mph.  As a result the driver side rear tail light cracked and the bumper and rear quarter panel were scuffed.  Insurance covered the incident and a brand new light was installed and the body work was done by a professional.  You would never know it happened.

2. There is a small crack in the driver-side side skirt, right behind the front wheel.  This was there when I got the car and I never addressed it.  Looks like someone removed the side skirt at one time and I'm guessing that is how it happened (see picture).

3. There are a couple of TINY paint chips (maybe 5 total) that I've covered with touch-up paint, but that are still slightly visible - barely a consideration.

4. I bumped the headlight switch with my knee getting into the car one time and the plastic around it has a crack that is barely noticeable (see pictures).

5. There is some light curb rash on the driver-side front wheel.  This was from the previous owner.

6. There is a small scratch in the rear window tint.  This happened last week from a surf board fin and the glass is fine.

A couple of things things that I've had to have fixed on the car:

1. I had an issue with the 3rd brake light (on the rear spoiler) last year where only half the LEDs in the light were coming on.  I took it to a VW dealer and they replaced an $800.00 part in the computer that was putting a bad voltage through that light, along with the light itself.  The whole thing was covered under the 5 year/50,000 mile warranty and the light has been fine since.

2. The "Check Engine" light came on at the beginning of this year, so I took it to the dealership again.  There was an issue with a butterfly valve sticking in the intake manifold.  They replaced the whole thing while performing the 40,000 mile maintenance.  This was also covered under the 5 year/50,000 mile warranty.

A couple of things that have been added:

1. The car has super dark tint all the way around, and it was professionally done, so it looks awesome.  I got pulled over for it immediately after buying the car, and was given a warning and told to have it removed.  That was in Ohio, but in Virginia I've never been pulled over for it.

2. The car has the nice GTI rubber mats (the driver one is coming close to having a small hole worn through, but the rest are like new), as well as the VW "Gorilla-Gear" trunk protector mat.  The original floor mats are included.

3. Less than 1500 miles ago I put Brembo (drilled, zinc-coated) rotors all around on the car, along with Hawk ceramic pads (a $700.00 investment).  I was surprised at how much more responsive the brakes were, and the ceramic pads are quieter and generate less dust.  These brakes look great and will stay that way for a long time.

4. I have two brand new Good Year Eagle GT All Season tires that will come with the car (see picture).  I already have these tires on the front, but have not yet replaced the rears (Dunlop SP Sport 01 A/S) because they're such good tires ($210.00 a piece) and still have some life left in them.

5. I put the factory VW roof bars on it.  They have a few scuffs here and there but are fully functional and look and work great.

That's pretty much it.  Please feel free to call or message me anytime with questions (606-547-6565), and thanks for looking!

The Volkswagen Group switches official language to English

Wed, Dec 14 2016

The Volkswagen Group can't be fairly thought of as entirely German anymore, so the news that the company is switching its official language to English to help attract managers and executives is a rational, if surprising, decision. While many VW Group companies are still staidly German in character and culture, consider the other companies that it controls: Bentley (British), Bugatti (French), Ducati and Lamborghini (Italian), Skoda (Czech), Scania trucks (Swedish), and SEAT (Spanish). Not to mention the large Volkswagen Group of America operation, which constructs cars in Chattanooga, TN. Volkswagen's explicit motivation is to improve management recruitment – making sure the company isn't losing out on candidates for important positions because they can't speak German – and that's inherently sensible in a globalized economy. Particularly considering, like it or lump it, that English is the lingua franca of said global economy. It also should make it inherently easier to communicate between its world-wide subsidiaries and coordinate operations. It's hard to say for sure if this will have any impact on the consumer, although it's easy to see the benefits if, say, VW Group hires some American product planners or engineers and they push for features and designs that more closely suit American needs. After all, the US is a hugely important market for any manufacturer, and so the switch to English almost certainly has something to do with the outsized influence of the US in the global economy. And there doesn't seem to be a downside from a purely rational perspective, although it could mean that the Group's corporate culture becomes less German. Whether that's a good or a bad thing depends on your perspective. VW bringing fuel cell concept to LA Auto Show

Mon, Nov 17 2014

Amid the flurry of hydrogen announcements from Toyota and Honda last night, Volkwagen has something to add: a new hydrogen fuel cell concept vehicle. This will be the first VW hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in many years – remember the Tiguan Hy-Motion back in 2008? – and it comes as a bit of a surprise. First written up by the German publication Wirtschaft Woche, VW is going to have the prototype car (not pictured) available at the ride and drive at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this week. We don't yet know what kind of vehicle will sport the hydrogen powertrain, but our money's on a Golf variant. We'll see soon enough when we get to Los Angeles. What's interesting is that there have been a number of not-so-mixed messages out of the VW executive ranks when it comes to hydrogen vehicles. VW's Japanese president, Shigeru Shoji, said in September that, hydrogen fuel cells, "may fly within Japan, but not globally." Last year, VW's electrification head Rudolf Krebs said that "hydrogen mobility only makes sense if you use green energy." Also last year, VW CEO Martin Winterkorn said it's basically impossible to build hydrogen vehicles at a "reasonable cost." Nonetheless, we're going to see a new VW H2 concept soon. Thoughts?

Everybody's doing flying cars, so why aren't we soaring over traffic already?

Mon, Oct 1 2018

"Where's my flying car?" has been the meme for impending technology that never materializes since before there were memes. And the trough of disillusionment for vehicles that can take to sky continues to nosedive, despite a nonstop fascination with flying cars and a recent rash of announcements about the technology, particularly from traditional automakers. Earlier this month, Toyota applied for an eye-popping patent for a flying car that has wheels with spring-loaded pop-out helicopter rotors. The patent filing says the wheels/rotors would be electrically powered, while in on-land mode the vehicle would have differential steering like tracked vehicles such as tanks and bulldozers. At an airshow in July, Aston Martin unveiled its Volante Vision Concept, an autonomous hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle it developed with Rolls-Royce. Aston says the Volante can fly at top speeds of around 200 mph and bills it as a luxury car for the skies. Audi used the Geneva Motor Show in March to unveil a flying car concept called the Pop.Up Next it developed with Airbus and Italdesign. If the Pop.Up Next, an electric and autonomous quadcopter/city car combo, gets stuck in traffic, an app can be used to summon an Airbus-developed drone to pick up the passenger compartment pod, leaving the chassis behind. Audi said that the Pop.Up Next is a "flexible on-demand concept that could open up mobility in the third dimension to people in cities." But Audi also acknowledged that at this point it has no plans to develop it. The cash-stoked, skies-the-limit Silicon Valley tech crowd is also bullish on flying cars. The startup Kitty Hawk that's backed by Google co-founder Larry Page announced in June that it's taking pre-orders for its single-seat electric Flyer that's powered by 10 propellers and is capable of vertical takeoffs and landings. The current version can only fly up to 20 mph and 10 feet in the air and has a flight time of just 12 to 20 minutes on a full charge. The Flyer is considered a recreational vehicle, so doesn't require a pilot's license. Uber says it plans to launch its more ambitious Elevate program and UberAIR service in 2023. "Uber customers will be able to push a button and get a flight on-demand with uberAIR in Dallas, Los Angeles and a third international market," Uber Elevate promises on its website.
